Haltwhistle Roman Northumberland

House - Private room · Fair Hill, Haltwhistle, Northumberland NE49 9ED, United Kingdom

The Space

This room is a loft room which is accessed by a spiral stair from the first floor landing. There is a double futon which is remarkably comfortable! There are also two single beds. At the moment the maximum number of guests I can accommodate in this room is 4. I also have a travel cot for an infant up to two and a half, depending on size. The cot could only be used if the futon is not in use as space would be limited.
The room is quite large and sunny, heated by a radiator and has a chest of drawers and a garment rail.
Guests will share the bathroom/shower on the first floor.
Guests are welcome to use the ground floor kitchen to self cater, and the washing machine in the extension, there is also a shower room/toilet in that extension.
A cooked breakfast can be ordered and will be charged £4.00pp daily. If a smaller breakfast is required: tea/coffee, cereal toast and fruit, that is available at £2.00 per person.
Although my house is quite central in the town, it remains a quiet peaceful place. The shops are a minute away: we have 2 supermarkets, a chemist, bank, post office, butchers and greengrocers and several others. There are several pubs in the town, some with real ale, and some serve food. Hadrian's Wall is the main attraction and the world renowned Roman Army Museum, Vindolanda and Housesteads Forts are within easy reach.
There are many walks here, the town hosts two walking festivals, one in April and the other in October. Both are very popular. Apart from the Hadrian's Wall long distance path, there are many other guided walks which can be bought from the Tourist Information office in the Library. If you want to walk parts of the Wall, there is a little bus which will take you to where you want to start. This bus runs between April and the end of October. Otherwise I would be happy to take/pick you up, and in some cases to transport luggage to the next BNB if walking the Wall.
Haltwhistle has good transport links. There is a station with hourly trains to Newcastle and Carlisle, some trains which stop here go on to Glasgow. The station is a five minute walk from my house. There are also hourly buses to Newcastle and Carlisle. Newcastle International Airport is about 35 minutes away. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh are easy to get to.
The Haltwhistle Burn is a lovely little valley which takes you 2 miles up to the Wall at Cawfields Quarry. Along the burn you may see red squirrels, otters, salmon, herons, kestrels, and recently a sighting of a pair of peregrine falcons hunting at the top of the burn.
I love living in Northumberland with its wide skies and sometimes wild weather! There are so many beautiful places to see. To the east is Hexham with its stunning Abbey , to the west, Brampton and Lanercost priory. Haltwhistle also has many Bastle Houses dating from the turbulent times of the Reivers.
The best part of living here is the local people who must be amongst the friendliest to be found anywhere, I'm sure you will love being here.

  • Great stay - lovely house, good location for walking, handy to supermarket across the road. Madeleine was very friendly and chatty

  • excellent welcome and Madeleine was extra helpful; very comfy room, nice big bathroom and lots of hot water; good location in centre of town and close to shops/pub if needed

  • Madeleine's hospitable stay was my first experience with airbnb. I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical of the process but she turned me into a believer. I appreciated her great communication up front, explaining in detail how to get to her residence. She greeted us with hot tea and cheerfully answered our typical tourist questions. As an organized and plan centered person I appreciated her preparedness. She had step by step instructions for working everything from the shower to the wifi and even assisted us with some laundry. I felt as if I were in a relatives house. Very comforting indeed and speaking of comfort, I slept like a rock in that bed :) a plus for this experience was her sweet and playful dog Jess. Overall memorable and amazing experience. You will love the town and it's people

  • We spent 2 nights with Madeleine in Haltwhistle, a perfect base from which to explore Hadrians Wall. Despite a bitterly cold wind we went to Housesteads and Vinlandia, both amazing and unforgettable as was the landscape.
Madeleine was a perfect host. She was welcoming and friendly and kind. Her breakfasts were fab and unbelievably good value. She was full of suggestions about where to go and what to see. We are very grateful to her for making our stay so enjoyable.

  • My first experience with Airbnb was excellent - Madeleine is very welcoming and her house is pleasant and comfortable. It was lovely to meet her dog Jess. Haltwhistle is ideally placed to explore the Borders as it's in the middle. There's a (hidden) Sainsbury right opposite Madeleine's house which is very convenient. The bedroom is in the attic and has room for three beds including a sofabed. The bathroom is down a little spiral staircase which needs care if you have to go during the night. I would certainly go again next time I'm in the area.

  • Our stay at Madeleine's was lovely. She made my friends and I (and my dog!) feel very welcome and was extremely easy-going and helpful with our needs. Madeleine's home is absolutely beautiful and has a really relaxing feel to it. The upstairs attic room is also amazing value and although it's small, we still had enough room for 4 of us and our wee dog and it was very comfortable. Madeleine's dog Jess is also a delight and very entertaining. Highly recommended! I hope to return myself one day to explore even more of Hadrian's Wall - a must-see historical landmark with stunning scenery. Thanks for everything Madeleine!

  • Great place! Quiet and cosy. Madeleine is a lovely interesting host and very helpful. Rooms were really clean and comfortable. Tight fit for 4 people but do-able.

    September 2013
  • Madeleine is a wonderful host, a sensible, cultured person with a rare sense of hospitality. The house is fully renovated with plenty of light and space anywhere. We stayed in a comfy attic with a very large bathroom down the stairs. Highly recommended.

  • Madelaine was a wonderful host and offers very comfortable and centrally located accommodation. She was very helpful in every way. Highly recommended.

  • Madeleine went out of her way to be an exceptional host. So far as to organise a doctors appointment, cook us a late brunch and look after our daughter whilst we went to see the doctor. Thank you so much Madeleine. We truly appreciate all your help and kindness.

I am a retired teacher. I live with my border collie Jess in Northumberland. I have a little garden which is still in the early stages as I've only lived here for 3 years. I enjoy walking, gardening, I am a WI member, I sing in the local choir and attend a book group. I'm trying to learn Italian as I am a quarter Italian and love everything to do with Italy. I also go to drawing classes and am a member of the Garden club. I love to travel and was away in Italy for a month last year, I drove there in March and took Jess with me. Then in August I was a Games Maker in Weymouth for the Olympic sailing. I listen to R4 and R3 . I read a lot and am quite laid back and like to do everything I can to make people welcome and ensure they have a good stay in Northumberland.
