This room is a loft room which is accessed by a spiral stair from the first floor landing. There is a double futon which is remarkably comfortable! There are also two single beds. At the moment the maximum number of guests I can accommodate in this room is 4. I also have a travel cot for an infant up to two and a half, depending on size. The cot could only be used if the futon is not in use as space would be limited.
The room is quite large and sunny, heated by a radiator and has a chest of drawers and a garment rail.
Guests will share the bathroom/shower on the first floor.
Guests are welcome to use the ground floor kitchen to self cater, and the washing machine in the extension, there is also a shower room/toilet in that extension.
A cooked breakfast can be ordered and will be charged £4.00pp daily. If a smaller breakfast is required: tea/coffee, cereal toast and fruit, that is available at £2.00 per person.
Although my house is quite central in the town, it remains a quiet peaceful place. The shops are a minute away: we have 2 supermarkets, a chemist, bank, post office, butchers and greengrocers and several others. There are several pubs in the town, some with real ale, and some serve food. Hadrian's Wall is the main attraction and the world renowned Roman Army Museum, Vindolanda and Housesteads Forts are within easy reach.
There are many walks here, the town hosts two walking festivals, one in April and the other in October. Both are very popular. Apart from the Hadrian's Wall long distance path, there are many other guided walks which can be bought from the Tourist Information office in the Library. If you want to walk parts of the Wall, there is a little bus which will take you to where you want to start. This bus runs between April and the end of October. Otherwise I would be happy to take/pick you up, and in some cases to transport luggage to the next BNB if walking the Wall.
Haltwhistle has good transport links. There is a station with hourly trains to Newcastle and Carlisle, some trains which stop here go on to Glasgow. The station is a five minute walk from my house. There are also hourly buses to Newcastle and Carlisle. Newcastle International Airport is about 35 minutes away. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh are easy to get to.
The Haltwhistle Burn is a lovely little valley which takes you 2 miles up to the Wall at Cawfields Quarry. Along the burn you may see red squirrels, otters, salmon, herons, kestrels, and recently a sighting of a pair of peregrine falcons hunting at the top of the burn.
I love living in Northumberland with its wide skies and sometimes wild weather! There are so many beautiful places to see. To the east is Hexham with its stunning Abbey , to the west, Brampton and Lanercost priory. Haltwhistle also has many Bastle Houses dating from the turbulent times of the Reivers.
The best part of living here is the local people who must be amongst the friendliest to be found anywhere, I'm sure you will love being here.
Madeleine was very friendly with good communications during booking and before arriving. There was a supermarket just across the road. The bathroom was large and the bedroom was very comfortable and clean. We stayed just for 1 night, absolutely brilliant all round.
Perfect host & gorgeous accommodations in a cute village walkable distance to Hadrians Wall! The room was so nice, bright & spacious; Madeleine was also very welcoming; and we had a lovely stay :)
Our first experience with airbnb was very positive. Madeleine is a charming, friendly host who welcomed us warmly into her lovely home and kindly accommodated our need for a very early start for 'the wall run'. No problem making coffee and porridge at 5 am. The house and our room were spotlessly clean with everything we needed for an overnight stop provided. Madeleine has a friendly and extremely well behaved, cute dog ( no doggy smell at all in the house). Beds were comfy, although the futon a little less so than the single beds. However, madeleine has had a new foam mattress made which will soon be available. Great location for walking; visiting Hadrian's Wall. Very reasonable price - we hope to visit again in the future.
We had a lovely two-night stay in Haltwhistle on our way up to Scotland. There is much to see and do in the area and Madeleine was a wonderful host. She accommodated our very late check in time very graciously and we had a lot of fun playing fetch with her friendly pup Jess. There is a grocery store just down the hill, as well as a couple of pubs and a cafe all within walking distance. The loft itself was spacious enough for our group of four and the gorgeous bathroom at the bottom of the stairs suited us very well. Would definitely stay here again if in the area.
Madeleine was a lovely and gracious host. We were two very weary wall walkers who were pleased to find the house was easy to find, handy for shops and places to eat. We had a great welcome from Madeleine and her dog Jess which made us feel very happy. The room was spacious and warm. For a little extra Madeleine makes a great cooked breakfast (worth the extra £4pp) and was very kind in taking us back to the wall, saving us a taxi fare - this was unexpected and very kind. We would happily recommend a night or two here
We had a very comfortable stay. Madeleine was welcoming and friendly and let us use the kitchen to cook our meal in the evening. Thank you!
Lovely stay! Madeleine was a wonderful host, and the attic room was very nice, comfortable, and had excellent views from the windows. We were only able to stay one night, but Madeleine gave us great directions and the hike through the Haltwhistle Burn Gorge and then up to Hadrian's Wall was stunning. Well worth the one night stopover! Great host, great room, and great stay!
Madeleine is a good host, she made me feel at home. It is a pleasure staying with her.
Madeleine's house was lovely to stay at. It had everything we needed - a lovely bathroom and a large room for our family. She had a cot put up for us when we arrived which was really helpful. This place is great to get to the Wall early in the morning without any fuss.
This was a great airbnb experience. The room is comfortable, with tons of great books, and the bathroom is spotless and spacious and has a fantastic shower. The house itself is 30 seconds on foot from a good Sainsbury's supermarket and no more than two or three minutes from the centre of town, a good pub (The Black Bull), etc. Madeleine was great with questions ahead of time and very accommodating as a host. Very highly recommended!
