We are GREEN, GREEN, GREEN! - totally off the grid. Energy from the sun, household water captured from the rain, and landscape irrigation from a well that taps both spring and ocean. All are very high capacity systems but we work with the weather of the day and are conservation minded.
This is a great escape. E komo mai.
Please no additional overnight guests without prior arrangement. A compost bin is provided for all of your kitchen scraps, please no food in the garbage. Awareness of conserving resources of our off grid system. Smoking is ok outside.
The descriptions and pictures really don't do this place justice. When my husband and I arrived on Hawaii from Oahu we weren't sure what to expect. We got to the cottage late at night and there was a candle "lit" on the porch and lights on in the house for us (candle was battery powered). When we got inside the cottage Mary had left us some fruit which was very thoughtful.
The cottage itself is beautifully constructed and tastefully decorated with art from the islands. The kitchen counter looks like hand it's hand-crafted (sort of rustic reclaimed wood deal) it was really cool! The kitchen had everything we needed to cook. We were so exhausted we went to sleep right away (nice firm bed). We fell asleep to the sound of coqui frogs (overwhelming almost on the first night, but you get used to them fast) and crashing waves nearby.
In the morning, I saw that the ocean was just outside maybe 50 yards away. You can see it from the kitchen in the cottage as well as from the side of the super awesome porch. The porch, by the way is screened in and big. Loved the tiki table!
On our first full day we walked over to Mary's house, which is on the property by pretty removed from the cottage (we had total privacy at the cottage). What a delight she was! She talked with us for ages and even showed us around some of her favorite spots in the area. And we loved her dogs.
The cottage, like the whole property, is off-the-grid (water catchment, solar power, etc) but we didn't want for anything. The WiFi signal was great and we were just careful about turning off everything when not in use.
I could really go on forever; the place was more than we could have asked for. I only wish we had booked Mary's cottage for our whole stay on the Big Island. We got the seclusion we were looking for, but really enjoyed interacting with Mary who clearly loves the area of Puna she lives in. We do too now and hope we're back soon (we'll definitely stay here again if it's available).
Wow, how do you describe paradise found? The cottage is down a rainforest lined driveway on a beautiful property just a short walk to the lava 'beach'. There are many great activities a close drive and Mary is happy to give you the local knowledge. Many mornings we simply lounged on the screened in porch drinking coffee and eating fruit. If you want a Hilo side experience this is the place and Mary is the host!
Mary was amazing and the listing cannot convey how great the house is. I would stay again for sure when i am on Big Island.
This place was just what it sounds like, quite, relaxing and peaceful. The place itself is so cute and we had plenty of privacy. I would recommend picking up some food on the way in if you plan to be there an be enjoying some meals on the porch, as the grocery stores are back into town. We loved hearing the surf and visited the hot pools which are not far when it was a bit rainy and cold, they really helped to warm us up.
Mary was great, very welcoming and great at communicating with us. We were only there for three nights so we stayed pretty busy but would have liked to have spent more time just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. Very relaxed and perfect if you are looking to get away from it all.
Wonderful stay at Pohoiki Cottage. Sound of the waves and the coqui made for a great natural connection.
So close to tidepools and lava walks everyday. Will recommend to others for their Puna trips. Mary provides everything you need for cooking meals. Thanks Mary
We had five relaxed days at the Pohoiki Bay Cottage.
The cottage is on beautyful private grounds and is well kept and very clean.
Mary & Michael are the perfect hosts.
If you like to explore the beautiful east coast shoreline along the scenic red road , it´s the right place for you.
Back on Big Island we would definitely like to stay there again.
Thank you Mary & Michael for this wonderful time.
Mary and Michael are really amazing hosts. They made sure that we we had everything we needed and were a wealth of info about the area.
The place itself is really great. It's a comfortable little place surrounded by lush green in every direction. As you fall asleep in the screened in porch area, we heard whales blowing out their blowhole nearby.
Overall, a totally unique, interesting and relaxing experience. We would definitely come back!
