We are GREEN, GREEN, GREEN! - totally off the grid. Energy from the sun, household water captured from the rain, and landscape irrigation from a well that taps both spring and ocean. All are very high capacity systems but we work with the weather of the day and are conservation minded.
This is a great escape. E komo mai.

Mary will tell you that this is the most beautiful spot on Hawai'i island and she's right. The cottage, the land it's on, the red road, the Puna district are superb.
We spent a month here and it was difficult to pack up and leave again.
Our hosts, Mary and her husband Michael, made sure all was always alright with us and the cottage, and helped make for a very pleasant (email hidden).
A wonderful retreat away from it all!! Mary, Michael and Jane were full of extremely helpful information and very welcoming. The property was absolutely gorgeous, we truly felt that we had our own intimate and peaceful paradise away from the commercial, resort setting. The Ohana (cottage) was very charming, comfortable, and clean. We could hear the ocean crashing on the shore every night. Aside from actually seeing whales on the lava shore just a short 100 yards away, we also heard them singing as we faded off to sleep. We could write a novel about how much we enjoyed staying here, but we'll keep it as brief as we can.
The lush green jungle-like area is really unique and we got into some great snorkeling about 10 minutes up the road at the Tide pools, followed by the warm pools just minutes away. The town of Pahoa, 15 minutes away, offered a wide variety of restaurants with delicious food for the nights you want to venture out. The Tin Shack (as recommended by Michael) was a scratch bakery that was truly awesome. Wednesday night we went 20 minutes south to the Farmer's Market at Uncle Roberts and had a wide variety of local food choices, live music and lots of local hand crafted items for sale.
While you are still able to book day trips and access the must-see sights on the Big Island, for any one looking to get off the grid and indulge in a genuine Hawaii lifestyle, this is your place.

My, my -- this was a truly amazing place to stay. Having been to the Bjg Island before, mum and I decided to stay in the lush & tropical Pohoiki. Mary's cozy cottage is bang on by the sea in an incredible space of tropical land. The cottage is very private: I had a chapter to finish and was able to write more than expected thanks to the beauty of Mary's (website hidden)-wise, Mary & her family could not have been any nicer, kinder or welcoming. We were welcomed in a proper Hawai'ian fashion with leis, we had fresh organic fruits & vegetables from the garden. Mary's sister, Jane, was beyond kind in picking us up and helping us out as we were hunting for a local car rental. We've already decided to come back to one of the most beautiful and most welcoming pocket of land on the Island. Huge thanks to the hosts!
We found paradise! If you are looking for an authentic Hawaiian experience then this is where you will find it. The cottage is immaculately clean, comfortable and well laid out. The spacious airy lanai was our favorite space to relax and eat out dinners. The grounds surrounding the cottage have every imaginable fruit tree. And we were privileged to watch Monach butterfly's emerge from their cocoons! The cottage is close to beaches bays volcanoes and parks. Pakoa is a quaint little town with great restaurants make sure you have a breakfast at the bakery! Mary and Michael are warm and gracious hosts, they made our trip so memorable and special. we would recommend Mary's cottage to anyone looking for a true Hawaiian experience we look forward to returning !
I had a perfectly blissful week at the Pohoiki Bay Cottage in Puna. The property is exquisite and the hosts are beautiful people, committed to making sure everything is just right for your stay. I feel like I made lifelong friends! You'll love this place. The grounds feel like you're in a private paradise and the sound of crashing waves were the perfect way to fall asleep each night. Additionally I loved the screened porch for relaxing to the sound of the tropical rain. Pure heaven in a very very special part of the world.
We have stayed at many places in the Puna/Pahoa area and Mary's Pohoiki Cottage is by far the best! The pictures don't even do the place justice. The gated property is on 17 beautiful acres, right off the ocean, with lots of exploring available - and two of the sweetest German short hairs (Maggie and Reggie) eager to accompany you so you don't get lost. The cottage is clean, cozy, comfortable, with all the necessary equipment to cook. The screened in lanai (email hidden) to hang out and overlooks beautiful landscaping.
Mary is very gracious and freely shared fresh coconuts, star fruit, grapefruit, and any other fruit that was ready to be picked on her grounds. She shared very useful information and helpful tips that only locals often know.
We are coming back in a couple of months and as long as Mary's place is available we will NEVER look for another place to stay!!
I stayed for two months in the Pohoiki Bay Cottage on Mary’s 17-acre oceanfront property. The property was lush and tropical and full of beautiful trees, plants, and flowers. There are paths through the property that take you to views of the ocean and lava rock cliffs that make up the shoreline of the Big Island. There is a very private small sandy area to enjoy sun-bathing while listen to the pounding surf. At high tide the surf splashes across the lava cliffs forming small shallow tide pools that you can soak in. The cottage has a large screened lanai (porch) that looks out over their beautifully landscaped lawn with lots of trees and flowering plants. You can see the ocean through the thick tree growth next to the cottage. The cottage was clean and well appointed. The bedroom was cozy with a comfortable bed and linens. There is no TV, but very good internet and mobile phone connectivity. The property has an electronically gated entry, and the owners live on the property, so one feels very safe and secure; like having your own private sanctuary. However, Mary and her husband Michael are always available if you need assistance or advice for activities. They are wonderful hosts and make you feel like part of their extended family. Also, I must not forget to mention the two sweet dogs, Maggie and Reggie that provided me with good companionship during my stay. They were always ready for a walk or just lying about in the sun. The property is convenient to Pahoa village with has many good restaurants, a pharmacy, grocery store, banks, and health food store. Also there is the Sunday farmer’s market. The property is convenient to the warm ponds, snorkeling ponds, and various activities at the Kalani retreat and Yoga Oasis. It is located in one of the most amazing places on the Big Island. If you want a truly Hawaiian vacation…..this is it. Aloha and mahalo to Mary and Michael for providing (email hidden) to relax and enjoy life.
