What a wonderful place! Laura and Chantal met us at the house and were very welcoming. They were also very understanding over my mix up over our arrival time. The house is in the most incredible position in the midst of the countryside and has everything you need and more. The garden is beautiful and we were even kindly left some basic supplies and a bottle of wine on our arrival. The house is in a great location too, really close to Orvieto and only an hour to the lake for great swimming. We were tempted not to leave however to sightsee as the house is so lovely. We didn't want to leave! Thanks for everything, we can't wait to go back.
After excellent communication, we met Laura and Chantal at the house. They are fantastic hosts, warm, friendly and genuinely happy that you're there to enjoy their house. We spent 10 days there; the setting is magnificent: olive trees, vineyards, Orvieto in the distance and a huge three story house to enjoy. If you want to experience truly living in an Italian country house like a local, this is the best you can get. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer.
The house is everything it promises to be and more. If you want to rent a relaxed house where you can enjoy nice food, nature and the (often) nice weather, this is the place to go! My four friends and I visited many cities in the Umbria and Tuscany during the week we spent at the stone countryhouse, but also made sure we made time to relax in the garden as well. The house is HUGE with several living rooms and bathrooms. But more importantly: it's a house full of life and character: every room is filled with books, paintings and history. We spent two nights playing the game 'Class Struggle', for example, which we might have never heard of otherwise...
If you rent a car you can visit cities like Orvieto, Sienna and Florence in up to 2 hours driving, like we did. Renting a car is a definite must when staying at this house, because it really IS in the lovely countryside and it takes at least 15 minutes driving (on mostly dirt road) to get to the nearby villages. The upside to the "remote" location is the great unspoiled view from basically any window of the house and the garden. :) Totally worth it!
Laura and several friends were present when we arrived to welcome us with Prosecco and an Italian snack (and there was even some food in the house!). They gave us tips on how to spend the week including on how to best get to the cities and restaurants they enjoyed themselves. We definitely got more out of our holiday thanks to their advice. During the week Laura was very easy to reach via text and e-mail. She replied very fast to our questions. There was also a handy "tips for guests"-book with local maps and a manual on how to make Italian-style coffee :). There's limited WiFi available but we tried to enjoy the good old life without internet and only used it when necessary.
The highlight of our holiday was the last evening, when we prepared a huge Italian-style meal for ourselves and ate it in the evening sun under the rose pergola with local wine, cheese and olive oil (the latter recommended by Laura). Life was pretty perfect at that moment. Unfortunately we had to leave very early the next day (06.30) to catch our flight home.
We'll remember this holiday and the house very fondly. Very much recommended if you like Italy, this is the place you should stay at!
Amazing place! It is even more beautiful than the photos suggest, and is equipped with everything you need. It is homey and has a nice lived-in feeling, and we found it perfectly clean. The house is absolutely huge; we had seen all the photos but were still surprised how many rooms and living spaces were there. We loved just relaxing there and cooking in the well-appointed kitchen. The location is secluded, and the views over the farmland are enchanting. We could even see the duomo of Orvieto off in the distance from our room. Orvieto is a great small city, and there is a lot to do in the surrounding area. You can also do some nice hiking from the house. There are many groves of olive and other fruit trees interspersed with fields of windflowers- absolutely gorgeous place.
Laura and her sister Chantal are helpful and pleasant hosts, and provided plenty of information about the area.
The only thing to plan ahead for is that the current internet plan only allows 10 hours of access per week; however, since we needed more for work, Laura and Chantal were extremely helpful when we needed to buy an additional SIM card to meet our needs. They offered to accompany us to the store, and Chantal went above and beyond by translating over the phone when we ran into technical difficulties.
Highly recommended; and we really hope to visit again!
We had an amazing 4 days at the stone country house in the olive grove at Orvieto. We were looking for a restful country area experience and the house and area lived up to our expectations. The house was well fitted out and had everything we needed to enjoy a restful few days. The area has also lots to do and we spent time in surrounding villages and old Orvieto and a trip to the hot pools was also a must visit. We also visited Civita Di Bagnoregio in the mountains and we had an amazing lunch cooked over the coals at a local Trattoria . It was great to be away from cities and villages at the farm house and we found some great local produce of eggs, olive oil and cheese from surrounding farms. It was warm and we had meals outside on the large table every night. Our Hosts looked after us well with a cup of tea and biscuits on greeting us and showed us around.
We loved this place! We felt like real, local Umbrians. The place was very picturesque, cozy and authentic. The house is comfortable, with lot's of space to hang, several options for tables to eat, inside and out and a hammock outside to lounge in, which I used every chance I could. We loved being able to shop in the local markets, cook in the spacious, well-stocked kitchen and eat outside, alfresco, under the arbor. We would highly recommend anyone looking for romantic getaway, or family gathering to stay here. I only wish we were there a little later in the year, to enjoy all the figs that were overflowing on several trees just outside.
A car IS necessary to get around, back and forth to town, the cheese-making neighbor and anywhere else, though. a great, nearby destination is the ancient hill town of Orvieto, which can be seen from the back yard. It is a fantastic town to visit, which we did several times. It has great shopping, restaurants and sight-seeing. There's also a farmer's market, which they have twice a week. The Duomo (cathedral) is spectacular, unique and historically significant.
Unfortunately, we didn't get to meet Laura, but, in her stead was her son, Giovanni, just back from South America. He was very polite, informative and helpful. He even went with us to the cheese-maker's house and introduced us, where we bought some of his delicious, home-made sheep's cheese and extra-virgin olive oil. Yum!
We had a great time at this stay. Laura met us at the house to show us all the things we needed to know. A beautiful location with a view of Orvietto off in the distance. You're in the countryside about 20 min from the hilltown's center. There's at least a week's worth of interesting places to see in the area, the Duomo, Etruscan caves, winerys, and other hill top towns.
The house is very large with many spacious rooms. With a fully equipt kitchen we cooked dinner each night after touring Umbria and Tuscany. The bathrooms were updated and clean.
