Description

The Space

Our Bamboo Jungle room is a private room located in our 3 bedroom guest cottage. This guest cottage is separate from our main house which is uniquely connected by stairways, overhangs and decks.

Our property has a very mellow vibe. It feels a bit like a hostel and has nicely been described as "Modern Wilderness" and a "Rustic Retreat".

The room is a bit on the smaller side however you have full on access to the adjoining sunroom and outdoor lanai which gives you a lot of space to stretch out and relax. You actually have your own designated sofa/futon and coffee table.

The sunroom has a great, open feel to it and is perfect for relaxing, reading a book or looking out to the ocean and tropical jungle view below.
The outdoor lanai is also a great space to enjoy a meal, stargaze or do morning yoga.

There is a not a closet in this room however there is a dresser with drawers for storing your clothes. There is not a TV in this room.

The space has a nice high speed network provided by Hawaiian Telcom. If the phones are down for some reason (usually high winds during the winter) we have a dependable high speed cable connection that can be accessed off the main house lanai.

The shower is located outside and surrounded by wild flowers, trees, a small rock wall and cedar wall panel. Many guests have expressed the outdoor shower being a wonderful experience even after feeling a bit apprehensive about using it. It is totally private and secure.

The bathroom & sink is located ensuite. It has its own little room with door.

The room comfortably fits 2 people however a third and even fourth guest is possible if they choose to sleep on the sofa/futon that is located in the adjacent sun room. *There is an extra charge for more than 2 guests age 16 and up.

Guest Access

Guests that stay in our Bamboo room share a nice sunroom area with guests who stay in the Pueo room next door. This sun room has a really nice view of the pacific ocean and tropical foliage below.

Although this sun room is a shared room with guests staying in the room located next door, you have your own sitting area (futon/sofa) and coffee table that gives a sense of privacy in the sunroom.

The sun room has a coffee maker, small refrigerator, toaster, small convection oven and induction hot plate for simple cooking.
It's easy to enjoy simple meals such as eggs & toast, cereal, oatmeal, rice, the warming of canned soups and things of that nature.

A stay in this room also allows access to the back lanai (deck). This is a shared area with other guests and family. This area has a teak patio table with chairs and umbrella, a BBQ grill and small sink for washing dishes. There is also a hot tub on this back lanai that we offer to our guests at no extra charge.

Interaction with Guests

In addition to our vacation home business, we own and run a small bakery and cafe in downtown Kona so we're a very busy family.
Currently our vacation home set us is for self sufficient travelers. Of course we do our very best to provide you with lots of information to make your stay smooth such as info about our area and also provide a sheet of "Frequently Asked Questions & Answers".
We also host amazing work volunteers from around the world who help us with assisting our guests with basic needs and questions.

The Neighborhood

Our home is nested on 1.5 private acres in beautiful Kona Coffee Country located on the hillside just minutes from Kona town

Driving down the road you'll see coffee farms, banana trees and macadamia nut groves and lush tropical foliage. Our neighbors are mostly coffee growers and farmers. You don't see any other houses from our home (even though we do have neighbors on adjacent properties), yet we are conveniently located minutes from Keauhou Resort and Kailua Kona where you'll find all the modern conveniences of shopping, dining, movie theaters, entertainment, grocery stores and of course wonderful beaches, snorkeling spots and amazing island adventures.

The historic Keauhou Store is located just under a mile from our home. This adorable country/vintage store sells all kinds of snacks, drinks and even has a small lunch menu. It's a great place to sit, relax and watch life go by.

Palekana road (the road our home is on) is a great road for a morning run or evening walk. One of our neighbor's farms is a sight for Kamehameha Schools so sometimes you can hear the kids chanting in Hawaiian as they work on the land. It's amazing.

On certain nights if you're sitting outside on the lanai (deck), the beats of the Tahitian drums from the luau down at the Sheraton Resort travel up the mountain. It is so cool. Makes one feel like you're in ancient Hawaii!

Getting Around

Our home is located approximately 25-30 minutes from the Kona International Airport (depending on traffic) and 2 hours from the Hilo Airport.
Renting a car is a MUST when staying at our place and we recommend a GPS (if you don't own a smart phone). This will help you not only find our home that is privately tucked away, but will also assist you in getting around the big island in general.
The local bus service and taxi service is not recommended when staying at our home.

Other Things to Note

We have 3 dogs that live in the fenced in courtyard. They're very sweet dogs and pretty much hang out in the courtyard and play. They rarely bark. If they do, it's short and usually only when a new guest arrives, they don't like the sound of a particular vehicle or there is a wild pig in the area!

We live in Kona Coffee Country and are surrounded by nature and animal sounds. The area (and pretty much all of rural Hawaii) has it's share of wild turkeys, pheasants, coqui frogs during the rainy season (spring) and an occasional ***rooster in the neighborhood.
We do provide you with complementary ear plugs however if you are a particularly light sleeper you might want to consider staying here.

***This room in particular is not as subject to the sounds of rooster so much if/when one comes around.

Aloha!

No cigarette or cigar smoking.

Unlike a condo or hotel our home does not have ultra soundproof walls. Our home is like a mini villa with 8 bedrooms. There are many guests here sharing space. Please be quiet, respectful and courteous of other guests staying in rooms next door, upstairs or below your room.
We expect our guests to keep voices down, TV's/computers/music low beginning at 10:00 pm.

Hot Tub: Hours of use are 7:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Please turn off all fans, TV's and lights when you leave for the day.

Please cover or refrigerate food when not
In use: Any left food left out is a dream for ants, geckos (we actually like the geckos), and fruit flies.

Because we catch our water from the rain, please be conservative when using water (brushing teeth, showering, washing dishes).
Mahalo!

Aloha!
Mahalo~Thank you for your interest in staying at our guest house during your visit to the Big Island of Hawaii ~ Moku o Keawe.
Our family has been living here on the island for 11 years and absolutely love it. We're originally from Taos, New Mexico and also lived in Alaska before moving to the island.
We are entrepreneurs and in addition to hosting visitors from all over the world we own and run a small bakery & cafe in downtown Kona called Evolution. We also own a small 100% plant based, vegan cafe (located next door to our bakery).
We hope to share with you our little piece of paradise on your adventure here!
