This cozy, private room is located in our 3 bedroom guest cottage. The guest cottage is separate from our main home, uniquely connected by decks and stairs, nestled on 1.5 beautiful, private acres, surrounded by coffee farms just minutes from downtown Kona.

The Space

Our Bamboo room is a private room located in our 3 bedroom guest cottage. This guest cottage is separate from our main house which is uniquely connected by stairways, overhangs and decks.

The layout of the property has a funky, Hawaiian style, feel to it. The entire home including guest quarters & lanai's (decks) is around 4,000 square feet so it is open and spacious yet cozy and comfy.

This is a wonderful room if you're looking for something comfortable, affordable and located in a desirable area minutes from downtown Kailua Kona.

The room is a bit on the smaller side however you have full on access to the adjoining sunroom. The sunroom has a great, open feel to it and is perfect for relaxing, reading a book or looking out to the ocean and tropical jungle view below.
There is a dresser with drawers for storing your clothes and a bookshelf with lots of interesting books for you to browse through if you wish.

The shower is located outside and surrounded by wild flowers, trees, a small rock wall and cedar wall panel. Many guests have expressed the outdoor shower being a wonderful experience even after feeling a bit apprehensive about using it. The entire house has high speed wifi.

The room comfortably fits 2 people however a third guest is possible if they choose to sleep on the sofa that is located in the adjacent sun room. *There is an extra charge for more than 2 guests age 16 and up.

Guest Access

Guests have access to the adjacent sun room. This sun room has a really nice view of the pacific ocean and tropical foliage below.
This sun room is a shared room with the other private room located next door. (See our listing under "Pueo (owl)" room.
The sun room has a coffee maker, small refrigerator, toaster, microwave and induction hot plate for simple cooking.
It's easy to enjoy fruit breakfasts, toast, cereal, oatmeal, eggs, rice, etc.
This room also has access to the back lanai (deck). This is also a shared area with other guests and family. This area has a teak patio table with chairs and umbrella, a BBQ grill and small sink for washing dishes, cups, etc.

Interaction with Guests

Jon and I are mellow, friendly people. We own a bakery & cafe in Kona so we leave early in the mornings and get home in the early evenings.
The very best way to reach us is via the airbnb message thread or by texting us.
On work days we leave the house around 4:00 am and get home in the early afternoons. We usually end up going to bed pretty early or just relaxing around the house. On our "off" days, we're usually playing, doing house/yard work or relaxing at home.
We invite you to come to our Cafe and enjoy a complimentary delicious home made NY Bagel and cup of 100% Kona Coffee, Organic Apple Juice or Tropicana OJ. (Available to each guest, one time during your stay). Please enjoy 10% off anytime during your stay with us as well. Our cafe has GF and Vegan options too!
We want you to know that we are happy to see you and answer any questions you have regarding your stay or area activities.
When we are home, if you hear us hanging out in the main house you're more than welcome to come by and say hello! We love meeting our guests, however if you prefer to be left alone and just relax, we totally respect that and it's all good with us.

Once you've booked your stay with us, you will be given both our cell phone numbers. We are best reached via text and also via the airbnb message thread. We always have our phones on us and are very good about replying and being in touch.

The Neighborhood

We live in a beautiful area, nestled in the hills just outside of Kailua Kona, known as Holualoa. Driving to the house you'll see coffee farms, banana trees and macadamia nut groves. Our neighbors are mostly coffee growers and farmers. You don't see any other houses from our home but are conveniently located minutes from Keauhou Resort and Kailua Kona where you'll find all the modern conveniences of shopping, dining, movie theaters, entertainment, grocery stores and of course wonderful beaches, snorkeling spots and amazing island adventures.
Our comfortable elevation of 1400' allows for perfect weather, gentle breezes and no need for AC. In fact, during the winter months (January & February) you'll find it can be a bit "chilly" in the mornings (around mid 60's).

Getting around

Our home is located approximately 25-30 minutes from the Kona International Airport and 2 hours from the Hilo Airport.
Renting a car is a very ideal when staying at our place and we recommend a GPS, not only to find our home that is privately tucked away in the hills but to also assist you in getting around the big island in general.

Other Things to Note

We have 3 dogs that live in the screened in courtyard. They're very sweet dogs and pretty much hang out in the courtyard and play. They bark at certain guest's cars however other than that are very good and you won't have to deal with them at all.

  • Antoinette and her family were not only the nicest hosts I've ever had, they were probably the nicest people I've ever met. I immediately felt welcome in their home. The house and property are in an incredible location in the hills near Kona with great views of the ocean and sunset. They have a few dogs and cats that are all very sweet and loving. The sounds of the coqui frogs at night was an extra bonus.

When I go back to Hawaii I will definitely stay at Antoinette's House again.

  • my grown up daughter and I spent a delightful five days at upcountry guesthouse.we were warmly welcomed by Antoinette and her family and their three affectionate cats and two older dogs and a younger lively one.our accomodations were clean and comfy and creatively decorated and the view (website hidden) was so handy to have the sunroom to cook and hang out in with the guests in the room next door.we also enjoyed going to our host's "evolution bakery, cafe and pizzeria" in downtown kona for some yummy treats and to say hi.right from the start Antoinette was the perfect hostess answering my many questions by email before we arrived and she and johnny showed us the greatest kindness in rescuing us when our borrowed car broke down and then drove us to the airport the next day to rent a new one.we would definitely like to stay with them again in their peaceful jungle farmland neighbourhood just up the hill from town(kona).

  • Antoinette was a perfect host. When we arrived, she gave us a quick tour of the house and we had the first Chance to talk with her and why she started this Guesthouse.
Our room was very clean and all was set as described.
We had no worries with Maka and the two other Dogs, they did not bark in the night and we had no Problems to sleep.
We enjoyed our stay here and will certanly come back if we ever come back to Big Island.

  • We did not spend a lot of time here, due to a packed trip with the Ironman, extended family, and multiple excursions. Antoinette was very friendly and responsive to questions and concerns. As mentioned by a previous reviewer, arriving after dark can be a challenge! My husband had some concerns about inability to lock our room while we were gone, but we were aware of this before we arrived.

  • (+): This place is well located if you want to stay in the Kona area.
Antoinette and Johnny welcomed me and my wife at our arrival and were very kind, explaining and showing us the place.
We've stayed in the Bamboo room wich is a simple room (bed/restroom) facing the courtyard.
(-): Speaking about the courtyard, as it was indeed indicated in the Airbnb profile, there are 3 dogs (2 Rottweillers + 1 shepperd-type) staying all day/ night long overthere, couple of feet away from our room. We were aware of that.
The dogs are very kind, really, but there's a detail regarding theirs barkings wich wasn't indicated in the Airbnb profile that you might wanna be aware of: they bark at night, and they bark loudly. Not all night long tough, but when they hear somekind of a wild animal's recurring noise nearby, we were thus obliged to hear them bark on and on until they stop and restart again.
Don't get me wrong: we are animals and dogs lovers, but once the barkings starts at the beginning of the 1st night of our arrival, don't stop after 2 barking hours, then you have to wake up, looking for their masters, finding out there's nobody in the property, and after that beeing obliged to explain/ ask one of the inside roomate to put the dog inside the house because you just can't sleep with the noise, resulting in loosing a couple of sleeping hours, that's the kind of details you wanna be aware of before reserving when a airbnb profile indicates dogs stay nearby the room.
We've sent an email on the next morning to Antoinette in order to let her know about the situation we faced and we were once again surprised that we did not receive any answer back from her (?) + did not have the chance to talk about this during the entire stay as we did not see her or Johnny at nights. Did they acknowledge our issue?, we'll never know.
Last but not least, there are 2 other rooms in the same building we slept, the floors/walls are definitly not efficiently sound-proof, therefore we've heard the people staying above us walking and moving chairs each night of our stay. Again, that's the kind of detail that helps you to choose a place to sleep in or not.
All in all, if i would have known that barkings and sounds from other rooms could be easily heard in this location, I would not have chose this location.
If sound is not an issue for you because you're a hardcore sleeper, well this place will be perfect for you, as Antoinette and Johnny and the dogs are kind

  • It was a pleasure to stay with Antoinette and her family. The location is excellent, located close to the south Kona area, but set far enough back in the hills to offer solitude and great views over big island farmland. Amenities are good, with a shared hot water shower and sink and a private WC; perfectly comfortable. The access to the porch, shared with other guests, was particularly nice- I spent some time on rainy days and lazier afternoons chilling on the couch there and occasionally indulging the curiosity of the dogs (not allowed on the porch) and local cats.

  • May 2013 - We ended up staying in the larger bedroom with a queen (king?) bed and kitchenette area and bathroom. This is the perfect set-up, ideal situation for a couple, and what we all hope for as guests. The bed was really amazing, we slept so well, very impressed as not all beds are created equal.... The room was quite large and had a beautiful view to wake up to. The main house was next door (a few steps away) with a full kitchen, (banana bread and tasty bagels) and our awesome hosts, (but we had total privacy). If you get anywhere near Kona, you must stay here, Antoinette and her family are so fun and easy-going. Great location to access the coast. The 3 nights we spent here of our 7 night Big Island vacation were our absolute favorite! The local restaurants and beaches are amazing - go to the City of Refuge! Go to Antoinette's bakery - Up Country Cafe! We hope to be back!

  • Aloha,
we had a great time staying at antoinettes place. antoinette, her daughter, and her husband are extremely nice and friendly. They helped us with all our questions and offered good ideas of potential trips and places to visit.
The room was small but nice, the outdoor shower was special, maybe some people need to get used to it;) but its possible to use the indoor shower as well!
Kona is about 15min by car, anoinettes place is like in the middle of the djungle, but only 3min to the highway! We enjoyed it a lot staying close to the original Hawaiian nature.
Thanks for having us at your place, we had a great time!

  • Look no further, this is the place to stay! My son and I stayed in the bamboo room for three days and it was absolutely the highlight of the trip. We both felt right at home as soon as we arrived. Toni, Johnny and their daughter Maya, were incredibly kind and gracious hosts. The place is clean, quiet and totally separate from theain house. Feeling more like a retreat center than a home, It is nestled in up on the hill with gorgeous sunsets and views of the vast ocean from the porch. Each night we fell asleep to the sounds of the jungle life and woke up every morning to our favorite ritual...eating at Uptown Bakery! This is Toni and Johnny's organic cafe just a short drive south to Captain Cook. Fresh, Delicious and very affordable....this place is not to be missed. All in all his gem of a spot was the perfect location for us. You can easily explore the Kona coast from here and still be away from all the hustle and bustle.
My only word of advice is if you're not a dog person (which we are) you may want to think twice about the bamboo room or the room next to it. (There are 4 different guest rooms here) They have 3 very sweet pups who stay gated just off the porch of the downstairs rooms. They are very quiet and super friendly, however, if for some reason you dont like to see pooches laying and playing outside your porch, then I would recommend staying in one of their other guest rooms that are not on the ground level if they are available. Otherwise, you wont be disappointed and we cant wait to come back an stay here next time. I would recommend staying here in a heart beat.

Taos High School
Pele's Paint Your Own Pottery Studio~Up Country Bakery & Cafe
Aloha~Greetings! We're originally from "The Land Of Enchantment" Taos, New Mexico and moved to Hawaii 9 years ago after living in Alaska for 3 years. My husband Jonathan and I have been married for 15 years and have an awesome 14 year old daughter, Luna. Our family is very entrepreneurial & non conventional. We live a very passionate life on the edge, to the fullest and are very passionate about experiencing the new and unknown. We are risk takers and entrepreneurial. Our friends are (never) amazed that we're creating something new, working on a new project, running around like crazies, expanding, remodeling.....pretty much DOING. We love being able to share lots of time together and work for ourselves while living on this amazing island. We own a popular bakery & cafe called "Evolution" located in the heart of downtown Kailua Kona. We are known for creating delicious, healthy meals, juices and smoothies as well as having the most AWESOME pastry case in all of Kona. We use all organic ingredients in our baking and lots of local, organic and Non-GMO ingredients in our offerings. Our family is Vegan so we also offer lots of vegan options and Gluten Free items too! We also have a contemporary ceramics business called "Pele's Paint Your Own Pottery" (named after Hawaii's Volcano Goddess). This fun business give us the opportunity to create art projects with children at one of the most beautiful golf and beach clubs in the world. We just embarked on the vacation rental business after moving into our dream home/property last year. After the experience of staying in some really neat Hostels and vacation homes in Alaska, we thought it would be neat to be able to have a space to offer that experience ourselves one day. And here we are. We've been LOVING the experience and have made some great friends through this really fun business adventure. Jon and I are very casual and conscious hosts. We want you to feel comfortable while staying at our home and are super easy to communicate with. Because of our super busy lives, we can be on the go quite a bit, however we're very easy to reach via cell phone, email or bakery number if needed. While it's been a while since we've traveled, we LOVE exploring new places and plan to travel abroad very soon. Jon traveled to different places in Europe years ago. I've yet had the opportunity to go there. Top of the dream list is England, Scotland, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Egypt and an African Safari. Jon is a certified diver and we have a 21' Ali'i Kai fishing boat. He was a commercial fisherman in Alaska for over 15 years and also a building contractor for many years. Our 14 year old daughter is "unschooled". She's really mellow, loves animals and sports. She runs the front of the house at our café and can make a mean latte or Americano! She can easily handle a line out the door with calamity and ease. She recently hired a personal trainer and is in the process herself of becoming a certified trainer. She also paddles and races with her canoe racing team several times a week, is a certified SCUBA diver, certified in CPR and is also in a year long, Hawaiian Studies Canoe Sailing program called "Na Pe'a". So that's the story of the Sharfin's in a nutshell. If you're looking for a beautiful home to stay in with people who are really mellow and real. Check us out!
