A wonderfully unique house 4 blocks from the Downtown Mall and close to UVA sleeps six. Hard to describe its awesomeness in words, so please view the pictures and find the video for a better feel for a place which is simultaneously old and new!

The Space

The Recycled House is a unique structure in Charlottesville's lovely North Downtown neighborhood. It is constructed primarily from materials that have come from somewhere else and are getting a second life. It took over six years to collect the materials and use them in a thoughtful way. The house was designed as a guest house and a lot of effort has been put into building a place that's welcoming, interesting and fun! The materials give the place a lot of soul, the light from the 33 windows is fantastic and the location could not be better!

Charlottesville's historic Downtown Mall is just 4 short blocks away giving you access to over 60 restaurants within walking distance as well as movie theaters, concert venues, grocery stores and some great shopping. The University of Virginia is less than 2 miles away and accessible by the free trolley service. Monticello is less than 5 miles away--about 10 minutes by car.

There's a king-sized bed in the master bedroom. The upstairs loft has a sleeper sofa that sleeps two, and there's a queen-sized sofa sleeper downstairs in the living room. All the linens and towels are provided.

The kitchen is fully equipped with top-of-the-line Bosch appliances. There's a side porch, an upstairs deck outside with a treehouse feel, and another deck (made out of aluminum bleachers!) off the kitchen in the back yard. There's a grill in the backyard you're welcome to use.

A washer/dryer is available off the master bath.

Free wi-fi access is available.

The house is suitable for families with children. The staircase is a little steep, so you'll have to watch the little ones.

If you're searching for a really unique space in a great location, I welcome you to The Recycled House!

Guest Access

I don't live in The Recycled House. It's yours to enjoy. You can hang out in the backyard and you're welcome to use the grill.

Interaction with Guests

I will greet you when you arrive, show you where to park, and give you the Official Tour of The Recycled House if you're interested.

If you want a sneak peak, check out the video tour at therecycledhouse with a dot followed by the word com.

I live in the other house on the property. We probably won't see each other during your stay, but I'm readily available if you need something.

The Neighborhood

North Downtown is one of Charlottesville's loveliest and most historic neighborhoods. It's fun to walk around and look at the houses. The Downtown Mall is just 4 blocks away. You can walk to a grocery store and a great wine shop, too.

Getting around

Downtown--with restaurants, movies, theaters, concert venues, a skating rink and some great shopping--is walkable. There's a free trolley service that runs between downtown Charlottesville and the University of Virginia and includes UVA Hospital.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at the Recycled house this past weekend. There were four of us women and we stayed two nights. The house was very comfortable and felt like an old friend (amongst old friends). Debra is a terrific host who shared the loving details of how the home was built. All of these little details add charm and interest to the house and gave all of us some ideas to bring back to our homes. The location is great, especially if you are centered around walking to the downtown mall, as we were. Debra was attentive from the very beginning of booking on airbnb, and was available when we (email hidden) wifi. The house was clean, comfortable and she even left us cookies and a bowl of cherries. I would definitely recommend this house to others who wish to spend a few days in a cool house, in a cool city.

  • We went to Charlottesville for Alumni Weekend and stayed at The Recycled House. We fit 6 people comfortably and were pleased with this very unique house. The property was clean, comfortable, and well-kept. Its location near the mall and trolley stop was also helpful. We will definitely contact Debra again if we come back to town.

  • I arrived late and did not meet Debra, but oh what a beautiful little gem of a guest house! We were greeted with a cookie jar filled with chocolate chip cookies! So sweet!

The creativity that went into this place was just as described and completely appreciated by our family (my daughter is an architect). We even had my mother and step-father (in their 80's) visit from the nearby Omni for coffee and donuts.

We had a very busy wedding weekend and I actually wish we had been able to spend more time in the house. I slept very well and the neighborhood is quiet and quaint. The house is close to everything including the pedestrian mall and Saturday market.

My son and I plan on spending a long weekend again in this home perhaps in the Fall. Wonderful stay!

  • Debra was very accommodating and flexible in meeting us when we arrived. She was generous in her sharing of the story of her house, its amenities and the highlights of the neighborhood. It is truly a unique house and a fun place to stay. The Master Bedroom is a wonderful space to wake up in every morning.

  • Debra, our host, is wonderful. She provided an extended, detailed tour for my fellow travelers. The Recycled House's location is ideal, and the house itself is an amazing architectural structure as well as a warm and inviting space to enjoy with friends. We loved our visit and hope to visit again soon.

  • I decided to have a spur of the moment Mother | Daughter weekend; Charlottesville, VA was just far enough away from home. We shopped [the home is just four blocks from the downtown mall], ate, visited with friends, watched UVa crush Syracuse, shopped more, read, and went on many walk-abouts. As with many homes I have rented from Airbnb pictures are not enough. This home is even more amazing in person, comfortable, spacious, and a wonderful owner.

  • We stayed at Debra's Recycled House for a ladies weekend. It is by far the most unique and thoughtful home I've ever stayed in! The house lives comfortably and has the most wonderful details. Ask Debra for the tour, it's really amazing! It is also very centrally located, only a few short blocks from the downtown mall. I'm definitely looking forward to staying again in the future.

  • The Recycled House is a must stay in Charlottesville. Unique design, functional, and perfectly located. And Debra is an outstanding host. She has appointed the house with the important amenities (great beds and bedding, for example), and checked in on us regularly to make sure we were comfortable and lacking nothing. Thanks Debra!

  • My wife and I travelled over from England to visit family in Charlottesville for Thanksgiving. We wanted to have somewhere for us to stay that was comfortable, fun and interesting and where we could also entertain family, who always look after us so well in their homes in Charlottesville. My wife and her father are UVA trained architects and her brother-in-law is a custom builder. We, and our family all, loved The Recycled House. The house is immediately striking and interesting from the outside; it is in a charming neighbourhood and is within easy walking distance of the Downtown Mall. When you walk in you are met with a comfortable sitting area with high ceilings and a dramatic staircase. To the right is an excellent kitchen/dining area with plenty of room for 6 and more to sit and eat. The master bedroom upstairs is particularly special, with a stunning window giving wide views of the tree tops and the sky, a sitting area with a roof terrace and a good sized bathroom and laundry room off. Upstairs also provides a great reading area with a second sleeper sofa.

Debra was a lovely and enthusiastic host who greeted us with excellent cookies and took us on a fascinating tour of the building. She deserves great credit for an unusual concept that provides a perfect place to stay in Charlottesville. We will certainly look to stay in The Recycled House when we are back in Charlottesville. Thank you Debra.

  • We had a fantastic time in the Recycled House; not only was it very convenient to the city and well maintained, but it is one of the most interesting buildings in the city as well! The photos do not do the uniqueness of the house justice at all, so be sure to ask for the tour!

About
I'm a web designer/developer and own my firm, drw Design. The Recycled House started out as a small idea and then took on a life of its own. It took over 5 years to collect materials from a TON of places to use in/on the house. Even the daylillies are recycled! (They came from a subdivision that was being torn down.) It's been really satisfying to save amazing materials from the landfill, dumpster, etc. and use them in a thoughtful and creative way. I've lived in Charlottesville since 1995 and love showing off this town! It's really hard to have a bad meal here. And it's really historic and pretty. There's always something interesting going on!
