A wonderfully unique house 4 blocks from the Downtown Mall and close to UVA sleeps six. Hard to describe its awesomeness in words, so please view the pictures and find the video for a better feel for a place which is simultaneously old and new!
The Recycled House is a unique structure in Charlottesville's lovely North Downtown neighborhood. It is constructed primarily from materials that have come from somewhere else and are getting a second life. It took over six years to collect the materials and use them in a thoughtful way. The house was designed as a guest house and a lot of effort has been put into building a place that's welcoming, interesting and fun! The materials give the place a lot of soul, the light from the 33 windows is fantastic and the location could not be better!
Charlottesville's historic Downtown Mall is just 4 short blocks away giving you access to over 60 restaurants within walking distance as well as movie theaters, concert venues, grocery stores and some great shopping. The University of Virginia is less than 2 miles away and accessible by the free trolley service. Monticello is less than 5 miles away--about 10 minutes by car.
There's a king-sized bed in the master bedroom. The upstairs loft has a sleeper sofa that sleeps two, and there's a queen-sized sofa sleeper downstairs in the living room. All the linens and towels are provided.
The kitchen is fully equipped with top-of-the-line Bosch appliances. There's a side porch, an upstairs deck outside with a treehouse feel, and another deck (made out of aluminum bleachers!) off the kitchen in the back yard. There's a grill in the backyard you're welcome to use.
A washer/dryer is available off the master bath.
Free wi-fi access is available.
The house is suitable for families with children. The staircase is a little steep, so you'll have to watch the little ones.
If you're searching for a really unique space in a great location, I welcome you to The Recycled House!
I don't live in The Recycled House. It's yours to enjoy. You can hang out in the backyard and you're welcome to use the grill.
Interaction with Guests
I will greet you when you arrive, show you where to park, and give you the Official Tour of The Recycled House if you're interested.
If you want a sneak peak, check out the video tour at therecycledhouse with a dot followed by the word com.
I live in the other house on the property. We probably won't see each other during your stay, but I'm readily available if you need something.
North Downtown is one of Charlottesville's loveliest and most historic neighborhoods. It's fun to walk around and look at the houses. The Downtown Mall is just 4 blocks away. You can walk to a grocery store and a great wine shop, too.
Downtown--with restaurants, movies, theaters, concert venues, a skating rink and some great shopping--is walkable. There's a free trolley service that runs between downtown Charlottesville and the University of Virginia and includes UVA Hospital.
Other Things to Note
When inquiring, please tell me a little bit about yourself, the purpose of your visit, and any special needs or requests.
No smoking inside.
No pets, sorry.
The maximum number of guests is six.
No parties, please. In other words, you can't invite all your friends over for a barbecue in the backyard.
This house is the coolest. I hope staying here will inspire other house-builders to find creative ways to recycle like Debra did. Remnant tile and granite scraps as flooring, ftw! And it still feels polished and new.
The location is very close to downtown, and you can take a quick free trolley to UVA, so no need for a car to explore cville from here. Debra had fruit and cookies for us which was really nice of her. Thanks!
Our stay at the Recycled House was fantastic. Debra was a wonderful and accommodating host. The house itself is spectacular and the proximity to downtown is extremely convenient. We’d love to come back and stay here again.
We had a great stay at the Recycled House! Unique, cozy and a short walk to Downtown Charlottesville. Our group of 6 was very comfortable in the house and Debra even provided an air mattress. Would highly recommend!
The Recycled House is one of the many hidden treasures of Charlottesville! It was such a breath of air to stay in such a unique home. The host, Debra, was a sweetheart. She met us at the house and gave a descriptive tour of every recycled material. It made the house that much cooler knowing where every piece came from. She even had fresh baked cookies in the cookie jar! The house felt very "homey", clean, and comfortable. It was a simple 5 minute walk to the downtown mall, filled with restaurants, bars, and shops. We used this house to get to the Monticello Wine Trail. It was perfectly located right in the center of the trail, and was easy access to all the vineyards we wanted to visit. We will be staying here every time we visit Charlottesville!
We really enjoyed our stay at the Recycled house this past weekend. There were four of us women and we stayed two nights. The house was very comfortable and felt like an old friend (amongst old friends). Debra is a terrific host who shared the loving details of how the home was built. All of these little details add charm and interest to the house and gave all of us some ideas to bring back to our homes. The location is great, especially if you are centered around walking to the downtown mall, as we were. Debra was attentive from the very beginning of booking on airbnb, and was available when we had a question re wifi. The house was clean, comfortable and she even left us cookies and a bowl of cherries. I would definitely recommend this house to others who wish to spend a few days in a cool house, in a cool city.
We went to Charlottesville for Alumni Weekend and stayed at The Recycled House. We fit 6 people comfortably and were pleased with this very unique house. The property was clean, comfortable, and well-kept. Its location near the mall and trolley stop was also helpful. We will definitely contact Debra again if we come back to town.
I arrived late and did not meet Debra, but oh what a beautiful little gem of a guest house! We were greeted with a cookie jar filled with chocolate chip cookies! So sweet!
The creativity that went into this place was just as described and completely appreciated by our family (my daughter is an architect). We even had my mother and step-father (in their 80's) visit from the nearby Omni for coffee and donuts.
We had a very busy wedding weekend and I actually wish we had been able to spend more time in the house. I slept very well and the neighborhood is quiet and quaint. The house is close to everything including the pedestrian mall and Saturday market.
My son and I plan on spending a long weekend again in this home perhaps in the Fall. Wonderful stay!
I'm a web designer/developer and own my firm, drw Design. The Recycled House started out as a small idea and then took on a life of its own. It took over 5 years to collect materials from a TON of places to use in/on the house. Even the daylillies are recycled! (They came from a subdivision that was being torn down.) It's been really satisfying to save amazing materials from the landfill, dumpster, etc. and use them in a thoughtful and creative way.
I've lived in Charlottesville since 1995 and love showing off this town! It's really hard to have a bad meal here. And it's really historic and pretty. There's always something interesting going on!
