  • Welcome to The Recycled House!
  • A cozy fire will great you when it's cold outside.
  • That's a super-premium queen-size sofa sleeper. Soft linens and fluffy duvet are provided.
  • Soapstone counters from the UVA chemistry labs. Cabinets from the Habitat Store. Bosch appliances from a demo kitchen.
  • There's the little breakfast sunroom. There's a dogwood tree outside the window that's so pretty in the spring.
  • We made a floor in the sunroom out of leftover granite from the local countertop place.
  • The kitchen has a cherry island with a granite top, and everything you need to cook a nice meal.
  • Everyone loves to hang out around the dining table.

  • Let's go upstairs.
  • The stairs are beech and birch. The railing used to be a futon frame, and yes, those are croquet balls.
  • At the top of stairs you can really see the materials working together. We cut down a tree, so we had to use it!
  • Left to the master bedroom, right to the loft on a floor of old hickory. A tree we cut down makes a railing and brick from a 100 year old building clads the chimney.
  • Those bricks are over a hundred years old and are getting a second life in The Recycled House.
  • The loft has a full-size sofa sleeper with comfy latex mattress, soft linens and fluffy duvet.
  • There's also a little reading nook.
  • Here's proof you can make a pendant out of just about anything. Here, we have vintage canning jars.
  • The master bedroom has a king bed. A closet and dresser are behind. That's an old-timey restaurant swinging door mounted on barn door hardware, and the handle used to be a horseshoe.
  • It also has a giant 9-foot window we had to put in with a crane. The columns are from an old textile factory.
  • This is a little inside porch off the bedroom I call the cocktail room.
  • Off the cocktail room, there's an outdoor deck with a treehouse feel.
  • The master bath has a vanity with a marble top. That's chestnut around the octagonal window.
  • All the tile in The Recycled House is remnant tile--leftover from other people's jobs. We tried to make it work!
  • That's cypress on the ceiling. The wall sconces are vintage, and the mirrors came out of a hotel.
  • Those tiles are from a pool. But no worries, the bathtub isn't that deep!

  • The folks at the local tombstone company carved our plaque out of a leftover piece of granite. We were a little too optimistic about the finish date, which didn't happen for another 3 years.
  • Here's the front entrance.
  • Miss Lily might come by for a cuddle.
  • Here's a view at dusk.
