A wonderfully unique house 4 blocks from the Downtown Mall and close to UVA sleeps six. Hard to describe its awesomeness in words, so please view the pictures and find the video for a better feel for a place which is simultaneously old and new!

The space

The Recycled House is a unique structure in Charlottesville's lovely North Downtown neighborhood. It is constructed primarily from materials that have come from somewhere else and are getting a second life. It took over six years to collect the materials and use them in a thoughtful way. The house was designed as a guest house and a lot of effort has been put into building a place that's welcoming, interesting and fun! The materials give the place a lot of soul, the light from the 33 windows is fantastic and the location could not be better!

Charlottesville's historic Downtown Mall is just 4 short blocks away giving you access to over 60 restaurants within walking distance as well as movie theaters, concert venues, grocery stores and some great shopping. The University of Virginia is less than 2 miles away and accessible by the free trolley service. Monticello is less than 5 miles away--about 10 minutes by car.

There's a king-sized bed in the master bedroom. The upstairs loft has a sleeper sofa that sleeps two, and there's a queen-sized sofa sleeper downstairs in the living room. All the linens and towels are provided.

The kitchen is fully equipped with top-of-the-line Bosch appliances. There's a side porch, an upstairs deck outside with a treehouse feel, and another deck (made out of aluminum bleachers!) off the kitchen in the back yard. There's a grill in the backyard you're welcome to use.

A washer/dryer is available off the master bath.

Free wi-fi access is available.

The house is suitable for families with children. The staircase is a little steep, so you'll have to watch the little ones.

If you're searching for a really unique space in a great location, I welcome you to The Recycled House!

Guest access

I don't live in The Recycled House. It's yours to enjoy. You can hang out in the backyard and you're welcome to use the grill.

Interaction with guests

I will greet you when you arrive, show you where to park, and give you the Official Tour of The Recycled House if you're interested.

If you want a sneak peak, check out the video tour at recycled.house.

I live in the other house on the property. We probably won't see each other during your stay (unless we bump into each like neighbors) but I'm readily available if you need something.

Other things to note

The house is not baby-proofed. I have hosted many families with little ones, but the house is probably best suited to kids 3 years and older.

The stairs are quite steep and can be challenging for little ones and older folks.

When inquiring, please tell me a little bit about yourself, the purpose of your visit, and any special needs or requests.

We stayed at the Recycled House for a bachelorette party/wine-tasting weekend and it was the perfect choice! Debra was communicative, comprehensive, and had thought through the little things that make a huge difference (good coffee in the cupboards, LOTS of fluffy towels, even makeup wipes in the bathroom)! The house is so unique and very Charlottesville - and the location was perfect for exploring downtown. We had 7 people and we were very comfortable there. Thanks for a great weekend!

This is such a cool house!! Just a few blocks from the Charlottesville walking mall. This was waaaaaay better than staying in a pricey Charlottesville hotel. We got so many great ideas for our own home for recycling and re-using!! Cheers to Debra

Location! Location! Location could have not been more perfect. It was a short few blocks walk to Main st where everything is at. Thank you Debra your a great host and the pictures don't do the place justice. Definitely a must see in person. The history and story behind the construction makes it even more special. Definitely one of a kind. We had a great and relaxing time.

We stayed at the Recycled House for our son's graduation from the University of Virginia. It was the perfect place for us to walk to the Mall, a quick ride to grounds, well-appointed and comfortable for our group. Fascinating to hear the stories behind its construction, we felt like we were sleeping in a treehouse. Debra was great to work with, we would highly recommend.

We recently stayed at The Recycled House for my sister's bachelorette weekend and had the most incredible time! Debra was an amazing host - she greeted us when we arrived for check in, took us on a tour of the home and explained where she got all of the recycled materials from that earned it the name. It was truly a magical home and is in prime location within walking distance of downtown Charlottesville! We highly recommend that if you plan on visiting soon that you stay here!

Debra is an excellent host and the recycled house is absolutely fantastic. It is truly one-of-a-kind. Really cool and different. And very comfortable, eco-friendly, and beautiful too. We rented the place for Thanksgiving break and had an absolutely fantastic time. If you are coming to Charlottesville this is the place to rent!

I'm a web designer/developer and own my firm, drw Design. The Recycled House started out as a small idea and then took on a life of its own. It took over 5 years to collect materials from a TON of places to use in/on the house. Even the daylillies are recycled! (They came from a subdivision that was being torn down.) It's been really satisfying to save amazing materials from the landfill, dumpster, etc. and use them in a thoughtful and creative way.

I've lived in Charlottesville since 1995 and love showing off this town! It's really hard to have a bad meal here. And it's really historic and pretty. There's always something interesting going on!
