Interaction with Guests
It depends on the guests. Some of our guests like to interact a lot with us (and we love it), and others mostly like to do their own thing (yep, we love that, too!) Our goal is for a guests to be happy and comfortable during their stay at Cuisine Miguel. Feel free to ask us any questions before or during your stay with us.
I am supposed to write here what I like most about the neighborhood around our home. Tropical breezes, beautiful view of the ocean and island of Chora off our front porch and the guest's bedroom, waking up to the sound of a multitude of local birds, squirrels, geckos, and of the Howler Monkeys that come to feast on the Mango Trees in our yard.
Our beachfront home is in a short walking distance to local restaurants, galleries, supermarkets, surf and paddle board lessons and kayaking. You absolutely do not need a car during your stay here in Samara, but we have ample parking in our driveway, just beside the hosue.
Other Things to Note
Miguel is an excellent Chef. We usually have Sunday Dinners, kind of Family Style. We typically serve between 3-12 people. Either your own private dinner, or we may have a few more people from different places in the world join us. The cost is usually $10 USD per person, bring your own beverages. The price varies, of course, depending on the menu choice. More intimate dinners may be arranged with Miguel on other evenings of the week. Those prices usually range from about $15 pp to $25 pp, again, depending on the menu. For Sunday dinners, the first person or couple or family to book, usually makes the basic menu request: seafood, beef, pork, poultry, vegetarian..... Then, Miguel shops on Sunday morning for the freshest supply of each and makes his decision based on the initial request. Often, a typical Sunday Dinner includes all of the above. Come Hungry! Here is one of our reviews of Miguel's Sunday Dinners:
From Andy Cary:
Cuisine Miguel is a culinary experience that you will never forget and will leave you happy and more than satisfied. Each course delivers sensational flavors and will literally have you begging to know what’s in there that makes it taste so good. For anyone who meets Miguel, it’s no secret that it’s a combination of culinary creativity, impeccable attentiveness, and a warm heart that creates a memorable evening and all around good time.

My boyfriend Javier and I stayed at Cuisine Miguel for 3 nights and we enjoyed it to the fullest!
Miguel and Sarah both were lovely hosts, just as described in the posts before. We felt very welcome and they gave us many helpful advices.
The house couldn´t have a better location, as it is beach front situated, walking 1min to the beach. Furthermore, it is located in a quite and private section, so when we were hanging out on the beach right in front of the house, we were practically alone in our spot (the one, you see in the description with the little bench and the boat), which was definitely one of the best ones in the 2 years I´m living in Costa Rica now. Walking to the restaurants and the village doesn´t take more than 5-10 min, so that was the perfect combination.
The room was cozy and clean, with a lot of personal charm (a touch of beach-hippie), we especially loved the bathroom (the shower :)).
We would definitely book this place again in the future! Highly recommended!
This was a lovely beach location, well of the road but easy walking distance up the beach to bars and eateries. Congenial and interesting host family. Thumbs up on this one!
My husband and I had a great time in Samara beach. Directions were very accurate and we had no problem getting to Cuisine Miguel. Since we visited in August, it was pretty hot and the sun beat down, so wear sunscreen! The room was as described, and was a bedroom in their home. Miguel, Sara, and her son all made us feel welcome and secure. We didn't get the chance to cook there since we really enjoyed the luxury of eating at Vela Latina, which Sara recommended. We ate there lunch, dinner, and had a few cocktails while lounging on their shaded seats. My husband really enjoyed his surfing lesson and wished we had stayed longer since the waves are so perfect there for a beginner surfer. Thank you, Sara and Miguel for having us. We wish you both well!
Miguel, Sarah and Jack were great hosts. They made me feel at home. Their apt. is right by the beach, 2 minutes walk, which gives the feeling of living in a beach front house for a reasonable price. Restaurants and stores were all in a walking distance in this bubbling Samara community. The beauty of the room is having your own bathroom and a refrigerator. Miguel was such a gentleman, he met me half way at the bus stop and helped me with my luggage upon departure. Don't miss Miguel's Sunday dinner; a great cook and I got to meet other guests during the meal. I will return again in the near future and highly recommend them.
They had someone meet me at the bus, which was nice, since I wasn't able to take a shuttle service all the way to the location of the house. True to what they said, it was a ten minute walk from the bus, but since you have to walk along the beach, that posed a bit of trouble for me with my heavy pack. I made it okay, despite the intense heat of the day.
The house was set back about 200 yards from the beach. At night it is a bit hard to find the house because there is no lighting on the beach side, and it's a bit of distance from the majority of businesses along the beach. I wish I had known this prior to arrival since I was traveling alone. I felt a bit unsafe walking back at night one night on my own.
There is no air conditioning at this establishment, and it was quite hot in Samara. They provided an extra fan so it wasn't too bad for sleeping, but it was very hot during the day, so much so that I didn't want to be there, and opted to hang out on the beach instead.
I could have used a little more direction about what to do in Samara when I arrived. Since I had no idea where anything was, I had to make my own way around and figure it out on my own. The other places I have stayed have had a good amount of "things to do in this area" listed and some good recommendations for places to eat and get groceries. The only place that was recommended to me to eat was a pretty terrible restaurant called Lo Que Hay. I did not have a good experience there, the service was terrible and the food left a lot to be desired. I recommend the place next door to Lo Que Hay instead, or better yet, go off the beach and eat at Oh La La for excellent thin crust pizza. Also while you are in Samara make sure to go visit the massage place in back of the organic market by the gym for a great massage!
A few things were broken at the house when I arrived (the doorknob to my room did not work properly and the overhead lighting was broken) but they made an effort to supply me with an extra lamp in place of overhead lighting.
Your bedroom will be right off the main patio, which is used extensively by the family, and there is little privacy, since you can't close the windows due to the extreme heat. As well, there was very loud construction going on both mornings I was there, with some kind of awful loud welding machine being used, and so it wasn't a very peaceful stay. I ended up cutting my stay short because of the multiple discomforts. They were kind enough to reimburse me partially for the last night though.
Thank you for your open comments. According to our listing on airbnb, our home is about a 5 minute walk to town and local restaurants and shops. Most of our guests stay here for that reason: close enough to walk to restaurants but far away enough to not listen to partying late into the night. I believe I provided you with a map of Samara, and I would have been more than happy to show you around town, if you had asked. There are also about 5 information centers all around town . Our announcemnt in airbnb does mention that we do not have A/C. Yes, this is our family home, and we do use the porch, as do most of our guests, for the ocean air and breezes. Samara has many taxis around town, so you probably should have taken one home if you did not feel safe walking by yourself. I apologize for the welding. One of our negibors was working on putting a gate on his door. It's kind of ironic, the women from NYC that just left the same room where you stayed left us a note: "Thank you so much for sharing your place with me in this beaituful Samara community. It was a wonderful 6 days of restful vacation time". We have 68 reviews for that room. My suggestion for you is to read all the reviews before your next airbnb stay to get a clearer idea from many other people's perspectives.
Staying at Miguel and Sarah's was a completely wonderful and joyful time, I couldn't have been luckier to have my first Costa Rica trip start here! The house is right on the beautiful Samara beach, but just a few min walk to restaurants and the town (literally perfect location), the bedroom is super comfy (I slept like a log), but what really made my time here special was the incredible hosts. I love when an Airbnb brings me not just a cool place to stay, but awesome people that I connect with and share such fun times with!
Even before I got there, I felt totally welcomed and supported by Sarah, who gave me advice on how to get to Samara from San Jose, and that only continued upon my arrival. Sarah was beyond helpful with recommendations for the area and answers to any questions I had, but more than that, she and her family made me feel totally at home in this foreign (though gorgeous) place where I was traveling by myself and feeling a little overwhelmed at first.
Sarah and Miguel are such cool people to hang out and chat with over a Pilsen (or 5) and I had so much fun staying at their beautiful home. My only sadness is that my stay was so short, but I definitely plan to visit Samara again and I will absolutely stay with these lovely folks again!
We stayed at Cuisine Miguel with our 22 month old toddler, we arrived late at night from SJO and Sarah and Miguel made us feel at home straight away, we had some difficulties with how to get to Samara (all the busses were fully booked and we didn't want to stay in San José) and Sarah really helped us out by talking to our cabdriver and translating for us. Sadly Latina (the dog) was very ill and died during our stay, we really feel sorry for Miguel and Sarah, we now she will be missed. Miguel and Rens enjoyed playing guitar together and talking about music. The kitchen had everything we looked for during our stay, good pans, sharp knives and a blender so we could make fresh fruit smoothies. We had Miguels famous sundsy diner (except it was on a thursday) and we really recommend it! If you are looking for a fancy place this may not be your first choice, but if you want a laidback place with friendly owners you will feel right at home. If you are travelling with an adventurous toddler like we did please note that the owners are kidfriendly, but the house is not really babyproof. You want to spend your time on the beach or chasing after the roosters anyway. Sarah and Miguel, thanks for letting us be a part of your family for a couple of days!

About the Host, Miguel
Hola! Miguel is originally from Germany. He moved to Playa Samara in 2008. Sarah has been coming to Samara since August 2011. Sarah moved here from Florida in Feb. 2013. We both LOVE it here. We have met so many wonderful people from all over the world. Miguel is a chef and guitar player. Our favorite night of the week is Sunday. That's when we have our special Sunday Dinner. It is usually for about 8 people. Miguel usually prepares a 5 course meal, and then we sit around the front porch playing guitar and talking. House Guests who wish to join in on the meal usually pitch in for groceries to cover the cost of the meal, and they bring their own beverages. We have a dog (Latina) and a cat (Flo). I'd like to say that we rescued them, but, actually, they rescued us. They are "beach pets"and typically come and go as they please. Both are very friendly and sweet. We'd love to meet you! Mi Casa es su Casa! Hasta luego!
