Sylvia was a great host, and her place is very cool. It's extremely well decorated, and there is a ton of great art throughout the place. We were driving to Durham from Boston, and hit traffic and ice storms, so we didn't get in until very late. We were worried that we'd get in too late, but Sylvia was fantastic, and very helpful. She stayed up, and made sure we felt welcome. There was plenty of room for my dad, brother and I, and she stocked the kitchen so that we'd be able to make breakfast everyday. Sylvia was extremely friendly, and her place was very clean and a convenient location for getting around Durham. I would happily recommend staying here.
We had a great stay in Durham. Sylvia's home was in a perfect location-close to everything (movie theaters, shopping malls, hiking trails, Trader Joe's, restaurants and grocery stores). Sylvia was an awesome hostess. She did her best to make sure that we were comfortable, had what we needed and tried to have things fixed when needed. For example, when the internet wasn't working right, she immediately called her ISP to have it fixed. (It never did work consistently, but that was not her fault.) Also, when we noticed a cold draft coming from the nonworking fireplace, she had someone come to take a look at it. And when we needed cupboard & refrigerator space for our things, she had someone clear out space.
We did have two important concerns. First, we felt there to be a lack of privacy. We had no idea that Sylvia's "bedroom suite" was actually the third bedroom in the home (opened right next to our bathroom). She did have an outside entrance to this third bedroom but that didn't always help as more than once, she (or someone with her), came through our part of the house. She would usually knock on the door, then open it and shout to us, but not always. Once she came through without asking. We found this arrangement and lack of privacy to be a bit unnerving.
There was one thermostat. It was in our part of the house but also regulated the temperature in her bedroom so we were reluctant to lower it even though she said it was OK to do so. (She was recovering from a fall and we felt that she needed the thermostat to be set where she needed it to be). So we didn't lower it.
We could hear her TV, phone and non phone conversations which was uncomfortable. We also found ourselves whispering and keeping our TV low so as to not disturb her. We told her about our concerns regarding her privacy and our privacy. She made a genuine effort to lower the TV volume and her voice which helped a lot of the time. However, this didn't really take care of the problem (or resolve the issue of lack of privacy) as we felt we had to be quiet as to not disturb her.
Secondly, although the home was tastefully decorated with beautiful antiques, it is in need of updating. The microwave was old & inefficient. We were concerned about radiation leakage so didn't use it. Also, it was very cold for a couple of days and the inside temperature was 69 degrees even though the furnace ran nonstop. Sylvia generously offered to pay for a space heater (we declined & covered up in quilts we had brought from home). Otherwise, Sylvia's home was very comfortable and accommodating. We enjoyed meeting Sylvia.
I am sorry that you had trouble with the microwave. After your calling attention to my microwave, I summoned an electrician and made sure the microwave was safe. And it is. It is necessary to boil water with the high button on first as well as the timer. Everything that was brought to my attention has been fully resolved. I appreciate their intent to help me. They are most welcome to come back as my guest.
Lovely home and gracious hostess! Very convenient for our needs and very comfortable surroundings! Loved the surrounding woods and paths! Lovely antiques and art!
Sylvia has a lovely home with very interesting and amazing art/artifacts throughout. Although she does stay in the home with you, she is a very welcoming hostess and sure to make you feel right at home!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sylvia's home in Durham. There was plenty of room for our family, and being pet friendly was extremely helpful. Sylvia's home was very clean, and the neighborhood was great. Less than 10 minutes from Duke University, the location made for easy transit to and from campus. The full kitchen provided our family the flexibility to eat meals in while on vacation. Stocking the refrigerator with breakfast items was a nice touch. Sylvia's home is also convenient to a walking/running trail and numerous restaurants.
The home was lovely and quite comfortable. Sylvia was a most gracious hostess. I couldn't have asked for anything better. It made our first experience in North Carolina a very positive one. It was a pleasure meeting you and thank you Sylvia for all you did for us.
