Recomendo!
The Hillcrest Hideaway was perfect for a weekend trip to Madison. The apartment was the perfect size for a couple and had all the amenities as described in the listing. James was an excellent host and provided us with several great recommendations for the weekend. We would definitely stay again!
The Hillcrest Hideaway was a great find. James—the host—was super friendly and helpful during our four night stay. Both the bed and large couch were comfortable, which made the place a good alternative to a hotel room for two travelers. We loved the modern rustic décor and overall coziness of the space. Plus the floors were heated!
The neighborhood is charming and walkable. We caught the bus to and from downtown each day with no problems. I highly recommend!
The Hillcrest Hideaway is a basement apartment in a very quiet and convenient location, and generally quite comfortable. Our host met us when we arrived and offered recommendations for dining and local attractions. The front door was a bit shabby (it's old, white paint is chipped, doesn't match what is shown in the photo), so did not create a positive first impression. Also, there was no curtain on the front door window, so we had to tape some newspaper to get some privacy. But things improved as we went in. The space is efficiently laid out, and bathroom and kitchen are furnished with up-to-date appliances and fittings. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, and it was a good deal.
I had rented this appartment for my grand-parents visiting me for 10 days. From my experience inside and what my gd-parents told me: it is a functional little appartment (lower floor in the host's house). Beautiful neighbourhood. Very discreet host, maybe could have been a little more present to show us the appartment around on the first day. Otherwise, James has been available enough and helpful through the phone. The plus: Netflix available on TV, and a very convenient location. The minus: the shower floor is the same floor as the rest of the appartment, and the slope is not very steep so you end up with a lot of water around. Also, the bathroom sink is very small.
Overall, this is a good rental to use as a pied-a-terre and spend most of his time visiting the city and around. Not quite comfortable and spacious enough to totally enjoy staying the day inside, chill, read...
I stayed at the Hillcrest Hideaway for a longish period - three weeks - as I was in Madison for work. The location was convenient, a short walk from several bus stops and from the Hilldale Mall. The neighbourhood is quiet, shaded, with a couple of nice parks. James was a great host, and very responsive throughout my stay. He arranged for me to use his laundry room when I needed to and provided a dehumidifier for a particularly rainy day. The apartment is very pleasant, cool at night. I made good use of the kitchenette and the TV in the living room. It was a very comfortable stay.
James was a good communicator and had a lot of helpful suggestions for the area. I could not ask more of a host. The unit itself has a bit of a basement feel. It doesn't help that we were there on two of the hottest days of the year and it doesn't have air conditioning. It made for a moist and humid stay with typical basement creatures. The rooms were stylishly decorated and it had a large TV with all of the Internet amenities.
