  • This place is incredible. Serene, relaxing, very comfortable. A stone's throw to a lovely walk through the paddy fields and also the centre of ubud. Rio is lovely, open, very welcoming, interesting and helpful. The breakfasts are delicious. I'd highly recommend this place and will definitely be back.

  • Rio is a great guy who speaks fluent English, takes beautiful photographs & owns a great coffeebar a few meters down the road.

There are two private rooms & a swimming pool, at 5 minutes walk from the Ubud Palace in the city centre.

The offered great breakfast, by a friendly staff in a quiet hideaway from the crowdy town.

  • I can highly recommend Rios place. Very handy to Ubud. Lovely accommodation. Private and peaceful.

  • We had a fabulous time at Rio's house. It was so peaceful relaxing in the internal courtyard outside our room. The room itself is very thoughtfully appointed and everything works well. The local temples and stupas along the street were fascinating and made our stay even more special. We would certainly stay again.

  • Rio's place is tidy, peaceful and homely. An easy place to relax in spacious accommodations with courtyard and comfortable outdoor seating. A big advantage is the easy walking access to Ubud's restaurants and attractions. We were graciously welcomed by Rio, despite being after mid-night, and the warm hospitality shown by him, and his staff, extended throughout our three night stay.

  • Despite of our short stay (just two nights) the experience at Rio's place was above our expectations.
Rio is a great host, always super friendly and helpful and his place has a very cozy garden, fantastic pool to relax and very friendly staff.
And the best, located just in the heart of UBUD.
Next time we'll definitely try to stay there again,
    thank you Rio.

  • I stayed eight nights at Rio's and highly recommend it to other travelers. It's a lovely tranquil home, unbelievably quiet for being so close to the center of Ubud. The room has everything you need (extremely comfy bed, huge bath, hot water + good water pressure in the shower, lots of storage space, wifi) plus thoughtful extras (you'll find a universal adapter and electric mosquito repeller in one drawer, a small safe, wooden hangers with clips in the clothes cupboard, good bedside lights, jug of fresh drinking water + glass, etc ). There is also a study area off the main bedroom, as well as an outdoor table / day bed.

Breakfasts were wonderful - both myself and the guest staying in the other room were totally addicted to the home made strawberry jam by the end of our stays. In fact I'm still dreaming about it. Thank you so much Rio :)

  • I was comfortable at Rio's propserty in Ubud. It is a little bit away from the hustle and bustle of town which is lovely. There were some issues with the bathroom and electricity when I arrived, but Rio's staff took care of that pretty quickly. Breakfast was delicious!

  • Rio's place is at the "almost" heart of Ubud...giving you the best of both worlds: a relaxed hide away (by the refreshing pool) as well as the day and night bustle that is unique to this city.

The room we stayed in was large and very clean and the smiling staff always on the ready should you need something.

We had friends in the area who bragged about staying in a top notch mansion just outside Ubud...well well, they spent most of their time stuck in traffic, whist we had the best of Ubud within less than 5 mins stroll away!

We would highly recommend staying there.

About
Born in Europe in 1954 to an Indonesian diplomat father and a Turkish mother, Rio Helmi has been capturing images of Asia and writing since 1978. His work can be seen in magazines, documentaries and more than 20 large format photographic books. Shows of Rio’s still photography have been held in Bali, Jakarta, Madrid, Miyazaki, Palo Alto, San Francisco, and Sydney. From the late Seventies to the early Eighties, Rio worked as a photographer/writer and associate editor in the Indonesian media (Bali Post, Mutiara, Sinar Harapan,). Since 1983, Rio has freelanced for many regional and international magazines (Asiaweek, Geo, Harper’s Bazaar, New York Times, Tempo, Time, Vanity Fair, Vogue etc). Rio has been based in Bali for more than three decades, and speaks five languages fluently: Indonesian, Balinese, English, French, and German - as well as what he describes as a “pretty light smattering of Tibetan”. He writes in Indonesian and English, and also blogs sporadically about a wide range of topics. He has also moderated panel sessions and conducted public interviews at the Ubud Writer’s and Reader’s Festival which is now an annual event of international repute. His latest book is a retrospective portfolio of Bali over the last 30 years called “Memories of the Sacred” launched early October 2010. His work can be seen on (website hidden) - Rio also blogs sporadically for the Huffington Post. Rio has a gallery in Ubud showcasing his work, with a small cafe attached with the best coffee in town (our clients say so!). (website hidden) - Rio has also recently launched a new website dedicated to Ubud whose title "Ubud Now and Then" says it all, given that Rio has lived in Ubud nearly 40 years. The site naturally has events, dining, and other listings but also has an interesting blog roll written by various locals and long term residents associated with Ubud. You will find updated videos and photos . Rio describes the site as "a cosmopolitan small town newspaper". You can also find it on (website hidden) for more chatty and interactive updates. One or two nights is not enough for Ubud!
