Rio' house is absolutely under pricing, his house is better than the photo shown, a private, cosy room of cause, and the best is Rio has an assistant yuli to help for the thing in Rio house, like us the first time to Bali, it is lucky that have yuli help to communicate with people in Bali , and advise us where to go, additional, you can order a massage to Rio house which is very cheap and very good, the Rio house is just 10minute walk from Ubud palace. When I with my girl friend back to Ubud, I will absolutely find Rio house again

Just perfect. Great communication from Rio. Greeted warmly on arrival at 1am. As described. Quiet, private setting, easy walk to Ubud centre. Charming host & delightful staff. I've been travelling to Bali since the '70s & it's reassuring to still find treasures like this. Highly recommend.

A relationship with Rio begins from the moment you make your booking. He starts the conversation before you've even left home so you are already in tune with how you hope your holiday will pan out. We found Rio and his staff to be extremely helpful for all of our requests: dropping off our luggage early, finding me a tailor, a driver, directions to an obscure part of Batuan to find a particular artist, lingering by the pool while we waited for our pick-up to the airport. Rio has a wealth of knowledge and information about Bali and its culture and is happy to share. This is the sort of information you can only get face to face rather than the internet.

I was met at the airport as promised and had an efficient drive back to ubud. I decided then to use the same driver for my return and another journey. The house is located one block from the main street in Ubud. The room was nice, clean and pleasant. Hot water on demand, and ac system in the room. A soaking pool is right out the front door in a nice garden. Breakfast was good and good for you. A bowl of cut fresh fruit....some from a tree in the garden, coffee and a nicely scrambled egg or pancakes. Made to order. At the suggestion of the host I had a local masseur come to the unit. The bedroom actually had its own massage bed in storage under the bed. I felt really welcomed.

Rio User Profile

Born in Europe in 1954 to an Indonesian diplomat father and a Turkish mother, Rio Helmi has been capturing images of Asia and writing since 1978. His work can be seen in magazines, documentaries and more than 20 large format photographic books. Shows of Rio’s still photography have been held in Bali, Jakarta, Madrid, Miyazaki, Palo Alto, San Francisco, and Sydney.

From the late Seventies to the early Eighties, Rio worked as a photographer/writer and associate editor in the Indonesian media (Bali Post, Mutiara, Sinar Harapan,). Since 1983, Rio has freelanced for many regional and international magazines (Asiaweek, Geo, Harper’s Bazaar, New York Times, Tempo, Time, Vanity Fair, Vogue etc).

Rio has been based in Bali for more than three decades, and speaks five languages fluently: Indonesian, Balinese, English, French, and German - as well as what he describes as a “pretty light smattering of Tibetan”. He writes in Indonesian and English, and also blogs sporadically about a wide range of topics. He has also moderated panel sessions and conducted public interviews at the Ubud Writer’s and Reader’s Festival which is now an annual event of international repute.

His latest book is a retrospective portfolio of Bali over the last 30 years called “Memories of the Sacred” launched early October 2010.

His work can be seen on - Rio also blogs sporadically for the Huffington Post.

Rio has a gallery in Ubud showcasing his work, with a small cafe attached with the best coffee in town (our clients say so!).
- Rio has also recently launched a new website dedicated to Ubud whose title "Ubud Now and Then" says it all, given that Rio has lived in Ubud nearly 40 years. The site naturally has events, dining, and other listings but also has an interesting blog roll written by various locals and long term residents associated with Ubud. You will find updated videos and photos . Rio describes the site as "a cosmopolitan small town newspaper". You can also find it on for more chatty and interactive updates. One or two nights is not enough for Ubud!
