I can say that Rio's house is the best place for relexing in Ubud. It is very cozy with kind staffs. Also close to downtown, but not crowded, not noisy. Specially I like to spend some time in he library with photos and enjoy swimming in cool pool during sunny day time. Absolutely I will recommend Rio's house to my friend and family.

Situated minutes from the heart of bustling Ubud, this beautiful, quiet home gave us the sanctuary we needed to recharge, and from there to explore the surroundings. Rio was incredibly helpful. His local knowledge and contacts were invaluable. His amazing photographs are displayed in the home-stay, and his gallery and cafe are close by. And, the breakfasts are superb! A truly rewarding and satisfying visit.

Rio and co. were such a welcoming host. The room and outdoor living was spacious. It is a great place to stay if you're wanting to check out Ubud's sights as they are only short walks away.

It's the perfect place to stay in Ubud. You won't realise it's only a 5-minute stroll to the town centre considering how peaceful it is! It's homey, clean and seamless check-in/out. The staff are really friendly and make delicious breakfast. Above all, Rio himself is a wonderful host. Couldn't have asked for more really - I would definitely return in a heart beat!

This is my second time staying at Rio's. I picked it as it is a convenient and safe location that is walking distance to most things but yet a quiet oasis once I step into the compound of the house. As always, the breakfast is good and the small pool is a delight on hot afternoons. Pixie, the cat, is also entertaining when she comes by the garden/pool area.

I really enjoyed my stay at Rio´s house. It is a very beauftiful and calm place only a few minutes away from the center. Rio is a great host and I felt very welcome right from the beginning. He proposed to arrange my taxi transfer from the airport and was always interested in what I was doing. It was great to hear from Rio about his work, Ubud and other things. He knows the place very well as a long time resident and also from a journalistic perspective. The rooms were very clean an well equipped. When I spent some free time at the house, I loved to have a look into one of the many photobooks in the living room, sitting at the terrace or cooling off in the pool. The staff were very friendly and there is a watchman at night which made me feel very safe. The breakfast including fruit salad, toast, scrambled eggs, fresh jam and coffee or tea was also very good. When I come back to Ubud, I will definitely stay at Rio's house again.

Rio User Profile

Born in Europe in 1954 to an Indonesian diplomat father and a Turkish mother, Rio Helmi has been capturing images of Asia and writing since 1978. His work can be seen in magazines, documentaries and more than 20 large format photographic books. Shows of Rio’s still photography have been held in Bali, Jakarta, Madrid, Miyazaki, Palo Alto, San Francisco, and Sydney.

From the late Seventies to the early Eighties, Rio worked as a photographer/writer and associate editor in the Indonesian media (Bali Post, Mutiara, Sinar Harapan,). Since 1983, Rio has freelanced for many regional and international magazines (Asiaweek, Geo, Harper’s Bazaar, New York Times, Tempo, Time, Vanity Fair, Vogue etc).

Rio has been based in Bali for more than three decades, and speaks five languages fluently: Indonesian, Balinese, English, French, and German - as well as what he describes as a “pretty light smattering of Tibetan”. He writes in Indonesian and English, and also blogs sporadically about a wide range of topics. He has also moderated panel sessions and conducted public interviews at the Ubud Writer’s and Reader’s Festival which is now an annual event of international repute.

His latest book is a retrospective portfolio of Bali over the last 30 years called “Memories of the Sacred” launched early October 2010.

His work can be seen on (URL HIDDEN) - Rio also blogs sporadically for the Huffington Post.

Rio has a gallery in Ubud showcasing his work, with a small cafe attached with the best coffee in town (our clients say so!).
(URL HIDDEN) - Rio has also recently launched a new website dedicated to Ubud whose title "Ubud Now and Then" says it all, given that Rio has lived in Ubud nearly 40 years. The site naturally has events, dining, and other listings but also has an interesting blog roll written by various locals and long term residents associated with Ubud. You will find updated videos and photos . Rio describes the site as "a cosmopolitan small town newspaper". You can also find it on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) for more chatty and interactive updates. One or two nights is not enough for Ubud!
