There was a little initial delay waiting for cleaning to finish but once in we loved the location and convenience of the apartment. This is truly as central as it gets and an easy walk to everything. Everything was great although the apartment could do with a few more plates and cups and a little more through cleaning.
The place was perfect. It is a typical Montreal dwelling. Close to everything which is a plus and Fares was always there if we needed anything. Thanks Fares!
The day we arrived, the building had a water pipe problem, and for the entire three days of our stay, we had no water to shower or flush the toilet. I understand that this is not the owner's problem, and he tried to get us to shower with some of his other apartments nearby. But it was still a bit inconvenient. The room was not very clean. The pillows on the futons were quite dirty with marks etc, and the kitchen has not really been cleaned (still cups in the sink). The blankets were simply left in the cupboard on the floor. The fridge was also quite dirty (we didn't even use the kitchen or fridge). One of the futons was semi-broken, and really difficult to sleep on, and this was not mentioned in the listing.
Overall our experience during the stay was not very good. While I understand that the burst water pipe was beyond the owner's control, the cleaniness of the room could certainly be improved. The good side is that Fares was quite responsive to our requests regarding access to other apartments, and the location is very good and convenient.
There are many mixed reviews on this particular location, but I consider myself to be pretty easy going and figured a "no frills" apartment would be okay given the amount of time we planned to spend outside of it. I think "no frills" was being a bit generous. I'll start with the good... - Fares and Karim were quick to respond via text or email and bring anything we needed (toilet paper, an iron, the key to the parking garage) - The location is good for people looking to do a lot of shopping, clubbing or bachelor partying. It's similar to the Gold Coast area in Chicago if you're familiar - very touristy. I kind of feared that would be the case, and it's my bad for not really doing more research to confirm until last minute. Now for the not so great: - It seems this apt could be improved very simply by improving some of the design elements and furniture. The second futon would be simply terrible to sleep on. It wasn't great to even sit on - lumpy and not sturdy. Two of the three lightbulbs in the bathroom were out, and there are tons of tea light candles everywhere. The decor has been handed down or found in alleys for sure. Sheets were scratchy. Mattress stiff. - There is one mirror - that mirror is in the bathroom. This made it very difficult for four people to get ready at once. A full length mirror on the back of a door, or hanging in the living room or bedroom somewhere would do wonders not only for getting ready, but it would improve the interior design. - Friday morning it sounded like they were building a new Burrough in Montreal - so much construction in the area, and it started before 7AM. We were forced to close the windows - luckily it wasn't too hot outside. - There were exactly four towels and no hand towels or washcloths in the bathroom or kitchen. There was also one roll of toilet paper which we didn't realize it until we had about one square left. Luckily Karim was able to provide us with more within minutes (thank you Karim). - Lastly the chairs....oh the chairs. None of the seat cushions are bolted down (SAFETY HAZARD), so when I pulled the chair out to sit, the cushion must have shifted a bit. I fell straight through. I was scratched by a piece of metal projecting outward, and a dark bruise formed around the scar as the day went on. -The shower is either fire lava hot, or ice water cold. But honestly we're just thankful we took a shower our last day before 9am. Because at about that time a water line burst and water in the building was turned off indefinitely. I'm really not that hard to please, two or three of the above I could deal with. But as a whole, it wasn't the experience I was hoping...
