Interaction with Guests
I have traveled a lot myself and stayed with people all over the world so am aware of travelers needs and what makes for a good experience :)
I can easily provide you with loads of local information re swimming spots, where to find the best food and local entertainment, tours etc.
I am often home though do go away at times.
When I am away I have a friend who lives nearby who manages the house so she can help with anything you need :) When I'm home I am happy to give you space or share meals and hang out depending on how much work I have or how our schedules work out. I'm also up for dropping people into town when I can, taking people to the river for swims when time allows and will invite guests to dance classes and other events whenever possible :)
The Local Area:
This really is the best part of town! It's a quiet neighbourhood and just out of the town center enough to be relaxed, without being too far away.
There are loads of great cafes nearby and all you will need including a bakery, butcher, lots of options for yummy food - sushi, Thai, Chinese, an Asian grocer, bottle shop and a small supermarket all a 3 min walk away.
The bigger, cheaper supermarket, post office and chemist are about a 10min walk away.
The Botanical Gardens are just up the road, free and well worth a look! The Tanks Arts Center is also within walking distance and has lots of great exhibitions and events (I've seen some great music there!)
There are 2 bush walks you can do close by - a 1hr return trek - The Red Arrow, and and 5hr return trek - The Blue Arrow.
There is supreme bird watching down the road at Centenary Lakes - I saw Pelicans there recently! We have Rainbow Bee Eaters out the front of the house, Sunbirds, Kookaburras and more and a good bird book for people who are interested, and we get Green Tree Frogs and Birdwing and Ulysses butterflies in the back yard :)
There are 2 bus routes close by that run every half hour or more to/from the center of town at the Lake St Terminal/Cairns City Mall. You can catch a 130,131, or 121
I have 2 bicycles for you to use for free :) It takes 20-40min to ride into town and you can do most of it along the coast.
Walking is also a good option as there is lots to see. You can walk into town, along the coast in under an hour.
A taxi to/from the airport or into the town center costs about $18 each way. Airport pick ups and drop offs can sometime be arranged for $15 each way, depending on the time/s and our availability.
There is plenty of parking if you have a car.
The tours for the Great Barrier Reef all leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal at the Pier in town. You can head in in any of the ways listed above, or arrange for some of the tour operaters to pick you up from the old post office just around the corner from the house.
Other Things to Note
As with most tropical destinations there is dengue fever in Cairns. You would be highly unlucky to get it but we like to do everything possible to avoid it anyway. It is good to bring some insect repellant containing DEET (don't worry if you can't as we always have some here) and avoid the stripey day time mosquitos which are the only ones that carry the virus. Thanks to science 84% of the dengue mosquitos in this area are no longer able to transmit dengue to people.
The usual basic respect and cleanliness. Please pick up after yourself and leave the house as you found it. You break it, you fix it. Please turn off all lights/power points/etc at the wall when not being used. We have solar panels on the house so conservation is key :) No smoking inside. Pets are ok so long as they are house trained, reasonably quiet and don't chew things they shouldn't! You can come and go as you please but must be respectful of others - i.e. keep it down when others are sleeping. Back door key stays in the back door. Please shut the windows in the big room and lock the front and back doors so the house is secure when you go out. Please do not bring strangers home. Respect my things! You are welcome to read any books in the bookshelf - just leave them in the same shape you found them in :) Thank you
We loved staying with Sophia. Her home is actually more beautiful than the photos express, filled with an eclectic mix of art and color. Our bedroom was extraordinarily spacious, plus we had full use of the rest of the house, the backyard, the bicycles, and the pool (though Cairns was in the midst of an unusually cold weather front, so no swimming for us- maybe next time!). The kitchen was great- we easily cooked for ourselves during our stay. The location in Cairns is brilliant- we walked to the Botanical Gardens twice, rode the bicycles around the neighborhood, even walked to the grocery store. There are restaurants, cafes, pretty everything you want within easy walking distance, and if it's a little too far, just call a cab of catch a bus. I would highly recommend Sophia's gorgeous house for a stay in Cairns.
We had many emails before we arrived which made us feel welcome. Sophia had maps, suggestions for neighborhood sites (grocery, gas, restaurants, tourist places) all ready for us. She was very helpful and welcoming. We were sorry to only have one night there because we didn't get to enjoy the swimming pool. We had 4 adults with 2 in the queen bed and 2 on the sofabed. The room and house location was exactly what we needed which was lodging close to the Cairns airport for our dawn flight.
What a terrific host and wonderful home, full of Sophia's creativity and artistic passion. Such a generous and personable host, so willing to make the stay enjoyable and to share about what Cairns has to offer. Very comfortable character home, highly recommended with plenty of space in the blue room especially. Very quiet street and excellent location. Thank you Sophia!
We had a great stay with Sophia- she woke up extra early for us so that we could leave our things with her while we snorkeled that day, and was very friendly and helpful after getting home from a long work day. And great house!!
This time we were travelling with our 2 grandchildren for the first time and Sophia very graciously allowed the six of us to ‘take over’ her small older-style dwelling. The best thing about this homestay is its site and setting - the lovely Edge Hill neighbourhood; close to the Cairns gardens, the sky-rail, the strand, the airport, the university, etc. At the easily walkable nearby shopping centre we found excellent food and cafes, especially a Thai & Laos hole-in-the-wall with the best takeaways, and Ozmosis, a modern European restaurant catering for both dine-in and takeaways (best blond potato pizza ever!!!!).
With close proximity to the airport some night noise disturbance with low flying planes but overall this was a happy stay with a kind and attentive host.
Sophia was very welcoming and good with communication. Edge Hill is a cool neighborhood. Very close to the Botanical Gardens and some good nature walks/running lanes via the Blue Arrow and Red Arrow. Good cafes around (I ate at Ozmosis multiple times). Ask Sophia for recommendations. Neighborhood was quiet, which is what I wanted. You are relatively close to the center...15-20 minutes on the back, and less than five minute cab. Some excursion recs: Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rain Forest (oldest in world) and Cape Tribulation. Glad I stayed here.
Sophia was very responsive and helpful with suggestions of what to do, called a taxi for us etc. We used the two bikes available for tenants' use. The house location is very convenient.
