About this listing
We love our quiet home surrounded by oaks, palms and views of the mountains. Our location is unique because the "pink moment" unfolds unobstructed before our eyes every evening in the winter just as the sun sets.
We live in a lovely large Mediterranean style home in a quiet private location 4 miles (15 minutes) from downtown Ojai and 20 minutes from the Ventura beach. The room is large with a private entrance, outdoor patio, large open area planted in drought resistant and native plants and with a clear view of the Topa Topa mountains and the Pink Moment. Adjacent to the room is a private full bath with a tub and a shower and access to a large fridge. We supply a hot water kettle, tea & coffee, half and half/milk etc., and a small microwave along with an orchard of oranges, plates, silverware, cups and pure water. We also supply a hairdryer, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and soap so no need to pack all that. We are quiet, peaceful people, open minded and joyful. There is parking and you will need a car as the bus does not come nearby. We have a cat who you probably won't see but if you are allergic to cats this may not be the best place for you. No pets, please. Our kitty is a rescue kitty and a bit skittish with strangers and other animals.
Guests have access to a large frig, our large yard, their own private patio with a comfortable chair/swing, outdoor table and chairs.
Interaction with Guests
We enjoy interacting with our guests and giving them any help or information they may need to make their stay more enjoyable. We are both outgoing, friendly people but we also are absolutely fine with minimal interaction. It is all up to the guest. We sometimes have people who stay here while on a silent retreat and we rarely see them. Others enjoy exchanging life stories and we enjoy that too.
This neighborhood is made up of friendly, quiet folks. There are no streetlights so you can really see the stars at night. The houses are nice and kept up. It is very safe and we never worry about walking around at night. We often hear owls hooting and coyotes yipping in the distance.
The bus does not come by our road and its about 1 mile to walk to the bus so a car really is needed.
Other Things to Note
Over and over we are told that our guests sleep wonderfully in the Cal-King bed. A good night's sleep makes for a happy vacation! Also, we will provide you with a GPS for your car if you don't have one and are not familiar with the area. Peace of mind is a beautiful thing! Also, there are several nice restaurants closer than downtown Ojai. One, The Farmer and the Cook, serves organic vegetarian & vegan food and sells organic produce.
We are open minded inclusive people and want to attract guests who value the peace and quiet of our property and home. We ask that the noise level be kept down after 10pm and we will do the same. No extra guests, please, without first talking to us about it. No drugs and only reasonable alcohol consumption, please. NO cigarette smoking, please. Also, please take any extra garbage out to the garbage can (we will show you where it is just outside the garage). Thank you!
Because of the drought, we took out our awn and replaced it with beautiful drought resistant plants.
My husband, Bill Shields, and I live in Ojai and are both in our late sixties, love cinema, poetry, travel, natural health alternatives and nature. I was born in Seattle, Washington and lived there till I was 20 when I started traveling. Bill was raised in Seattle from age five and traveled extensively throughout Asia with his work. I have lived in Alaska, San Francisco, Marin County, Mexico, Denver, the W. coast of Florida and in Hawaii. I've always preferred warm weather to the rainy Pacific NW so, when I met Bill in Hawaii and decided to move back to Seattle to be with him, I lasted 11 years before I was very ready for another move to a warmer climate. Ojai has been the perfect fit for both of us. The close proximity to the ocean is a wonderful contrast to the warm Mediterranean climate of Ojai, the many beautiful opportunities for hiking, the close knit community and the various cultural events all supply an equal balance of nature, self growth and intellectual stimulation.
Both Bill and I are (mostly) retired. I was a Mental Health Therapist in Hawaii and Seattle and he worked for Pacific Trail/London Fog in Seattle for many years as VP of Sourcing. We are both active, curious nature lovers who have found our "heaven on earth" here in Ojai.
Two of my life mottos are "To thine own (Higher) self be true" and "The truth shall set you free." Being in integrity with myself and others is very important to me as is being close to nature and animals. Being a psychologist, I tend to explore what motivates people and try to always ask that question before jumping to a conclusion that might be less than an expression of their true self.
Airbnb has given us a wonderful opportunity to meet interesting people from all over the world and to share our love for Ojai with our guests. In my younger years I was a travel agent and still have plenty of that in me so, helping people find fun interesting things to do and places to eat and enjoy nature gives me pleasure. We always look forward to new guests.
