Perched on a ridge overlooking the Valley of the Calanchi and Civita di Bagnoregio (the ethereal 'dying town') our place is a restored old stone house, that is flanked on either side by other houses but has its own garden that takes in - that view. The house has traditional terra-cotta floors, exposed beams in some rooms and a very simple country eat-in kitchen with an open fire place. There are three bedrooms, the largest with own small bathroom (WC and shower) and a large bathroom with washing machine. The smallest bedroom has a french size double bed (140cm) and the third room is for the kids with one bunk and a kids single. No TV here! But lots of books and a portable computer for DVD viewing if anyone (i.e. kids) gets desperate.
Being in the town means you can go out for supplies on foot, visiting one of Lubriano's two superb local butchers, the fornaio, fruit and wine vendors or the Mini market. Lubriano has a lot of restaurants for a town of 900 inhabitants, the best being 'Il Vecchio Mulino' which is in the Slow Food guide and one of the reasons I discovered the town. Book the terrace and have lunch overlooking - that view.
All year round there is a great shuttle service that links Lubriano with Bagnoregio (for the must do walk to Civita) and the lake foreshore at Bolsena. This means that in Summer you can stay in Lubriano and go down to the lake to swim and relax for the afternoon, all details of this shuttle and connections with Orvieto and Viterbo can be found in the house manual.
Nice house, nice location, nice suggestions from Alice. Everything perfect.
We absolutely loved our stay in Lubriano! We were looking for a quiet village, free of tourists after the chaos of Rome, and this place was perfect. The house was comfortable and homely, with an absolutely spectacular outlook - we loved sitting in the grassy back garden admiring the view and listening to the birds. Alice and Leonardo went out of their way to ensure we were welcomed warmly - providing detailed information about the local area and a well stocked pantry, including chilled champagne and home made strawberry jam! At Il Vecchio Mulino we had one our best meals in Italy, whilst we also enjoyed some wonderful home cooked meals using beautiful local ingredients sourced from the butcher and grocer in the village. Lubriano was also a good location from which to do day trips to other Umbrian towns. We'd particularly recommend the walk up to Civita de Bagnoregio. We would not hesitate to recommend this place.
