Overlooking Civita di Bagnoregio and close to Lake Bolsena and Orvieto, Lubriano is a small and pretty town in the beautiful countryside where Alto Lazio meets Umbria and Toscana. History, wine, olives, a volcanic lake and rolling countryside.

The space

Perched on a ridge overlooking the Valley of the Calanchi and Civita di Bagnoregio (the ethereal 'dying town') our place is a restored old stone house, that is flanked on either side by other houses but has its own garden that takes in - that view. The house has traditional terra-cotta floors, exposed beams in some rooms and a very simple country eat-in kitchen with an open fire place. There are three bedrooms, the largest with own small bathroom (WC and shower) and a large bathroom with washing machine. The smallest bedroom has a french size double bed (140cm) and the third room is for the kids with one bunk and a kids single. No TV here! But lots of books and a portable computer for DVD viewing if anyone (i.e. kids) gets desperate and we also provide wireless for guests.

All year round there is a limited shuttle service that links Lubriano with Bagnoregio (for the must do walk to Civita) and the lake foreshore at Bolsena. This means that in Summer you can stay in Lubriano and go down to the lake to swim and relax for the afternoon, all details of this shuttle and connections with Orvieto and Viterbo can be found in the house manual.

For enthusiastic walkers you can also walk directly from Lubriano to Civita (about 3 hrs return). Ask me for more information about wine tasting or archeological visits in the area.

Our garden has a vine covered pergola (with grapes late summer!), gas BBQ, cubby house and a vegetable patch with summer tomatoes and more. Our prized fruit trees are a young plum and a hazelnut.

Guest access

Guests have access to the entire house and garden. As we are in the middle of the old town we ask that guests respect the neighbors. In high summer we ask guests to water the garden, in return for being able to pick from our garden beds!

I had a delightful stay at Alice's home in late August with my husband and almost-3 year old daughter. The apartment is cozy and comfortable- definitely a home and so much nicer than just a vacation rental! The location is perfect, with everything you need within walking distance. The view of Civita from the back yard is every bit as fabulous as described, and it was a pleasure just to spend time at the house. My daughter loved that there were toys and books to play with/look at, and she adored the very sweet and patient cat who would frequently visit us in the back yard. We also loved the delicious plums, grapes and tomatoes growing in the yard. Our stay was a real treat!

Lubriano was a wonderfull location for us. We easily visited Orvieto, the Sacro Bosco, Villa Farnese, Pienza, Bagnoregio, Cascatta delle Marmore, etc.; and really enjoyed driving through the countryside and seeing some of the smaller hill towns and eating some amazing food. Alice was VERY accommodating and supplied us with fans when we (northeners) griped about heat (it really was pretty cool in most of the house without them). She also has a whole portfolio of great ideas on where to go, what to eat, what to see. The view of Civita from the back of the house is jaw dropping. The kitchen is adorable and we easily cooked up many meals while there. The only potential downside is a bit of damp in the ceiling from an upstairs neighbor. We were at the house for 10 days though and it didn't seem to bother us. Thanks Alice!

Response from Alice Kiandra:
Thanks Darcy, I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay in the house and they area. Thanks for all your feedback, we are at the house now and as you said the damp in the bathroom is not pervasive but removing it is on my hit list. Thanks again Darcy and family!

The view from the house is to die for, such a magnificent display to look out over. The house is quirky & Alice quick to remedy any requests. The weather was very hot at the time of our stay, but the fans supplied helped to combat the heat. The village had all you needed in any supplies to make a meal or restaurants to eat out. In general a good experience.

We enjoyed staying in Alice's house. It is situated in a lovely, quiet village, with a spectacular view over Citiva, 'the dying village'. It is easy to feel at home in this house. Our daughter loved the books and toys, we loved the balcony and garden. Alice has made a nice folder, containing information about the region. A great place to enjoy 'Italian life' after a visit to busy, crowded Rome!

We arrived and everything was taken care of. Even got fresh eggs for breakfast and a bottle of local wine for the evening. The place is just wonderful, the view, the garden, the many lovely details. We stayed with kids and they loved it, cause a cat always came visiting us. It was very clean and the view is just spectacular. Lubriano is quiet and very nice. Local shops with regional products, and if there would be something to ask, you can always contact Alice. We had some wonderful food in the vecchio Molino restaurant aswell as in the pizzeria Frantoio. We can only recommend that Place and give 5 magic stars. Thanks Alice for having us!!!!

We( a family of 6 with 4 grown up children) had a lovely time at Alice's house in Lubriano. The house is very comfortable with everything you need ( including a turntable with vinyl records!). Alice is an excellent and thoughtful host and we felt very welcome. The house and garden - and spectacular view - were perfect. The little town of Lubriano is well placed for great day trips( Renaissance gardens, Todi, Orvieto) and the countryside is beautiful . We ate 2x at Al Vecchio Mulino - a local restaurant, with the most delicious food. We made use of the bar, the bakery, minimarket and fruit and vegetable shops- all very handy. All in all, we had a wonderful holiday. Thank you Alice.

This is a beautifully located house with a little garden that our children loved. The view of the Civita de Bagnoregio from the garden is spectacular. The house is very obviously a private home that you get invited into; very well equipped and with a lot of toys that our children really appreciated. Alice is a great host that veryswiftly replied with detailed answers for our inquiries regarding the house. Strongly recommended.
