About this listing
We have a comfortable room available in a retro-styled top floor apartment, with wrapped around balcony. The apartment is located in the middle of Newtown, with the happening King street only 1 minute away. Newtown is funky and vibrant. We are a stone-throw away from King Street with Sydney's best cafes, bars, shops and restaurants.
The apartment is decorated with retro/vintage furniture (quite a few handmade too). The living room is to be enjoyed on the comfy couch with books, movies and vinyl records.
In your bright and airy bedroom, you will have a comfortable double bed with built-in wardrobe. You will also have access to unlimited Wifi and internal laundry facility. You can use the PC with 27” monitor in the living room too.
You will be staying with Joel & Rachel (that’s us). We both are easygoing and laid-back. We love meeting new people and hearing their stories.
We are multilingual and multicultural, yet local to Sydney. We know quite a bit about Sydney. If there is anything we don’t, we do our best to find out for you. We love good food and good drinks. Joel loves mountain biking and Rachel loves hand crafting. But we both love a bit of adventure. Together we traveled across 6 continents and 30+ countries. We love travelling and don’t you just love ‘a home away from home’!
Besides being adventurous, we both love music - Jazz, indie, folk; we are into art - Joel enjoys his printmaking while I enjoy painting and taking photographs of pretty much everything; we are mad about coffee - we don't drink 50 cups per day, pretty close though.
Personality wise, we couldn't be more different. I'm super outgoing. Joel is quiet and calm. Joel likes to read. Rachel likes to read out loud. We compliment each other in many interesting ways.
We look forward to hearing about your stories.
You will have access to a eat-in kitchen and the stuff you need to make a nice meal and sit down at our handmade bar table. A simple continental breakfast is available to you each morning. There is one shared bathroom in the apartment with a bathtub/stand-up shower. Fresh towels and clean linens will be provided to you.
Interaction with Guests
We enjoy having a chat with our guests every now and then. Our guests are always encouraged to use the communal area (living, balcony, kitchen) as much as possible. We also greatly respect our guests' privacy.
Newtown is funky and vibrant. We are a stone throw away from cafes, bars, vintage shops and amazing restaurants along the King Street. The lovely village of Erskineville and slighlty more alternative Enmore are also just a short walk away.
Transportation is easy. Newtown train station is within 8 minute walk. Buses run very regularly to Sydney CBD ( 5km away) Sydney Uni, UNSW and Coogee Beach (Coogee to Bondi walk, anyone?). Sydney airport is about a short taxi ride away.
Other Things to Note
Being 4kms from the Sydney Airport, Newtown/Enmore is slightly near the flight paths. Sometimes we do notice airplane noise during airport operation hours.
A few things to make your stay more comfortable:
1. We prefer no shoes in the apartment if possible. A shoe cabinet is available for you in the hallway.
2. Absolutely NO smoking in the apartment and within the apartment block.
3. Please don't hang wet towels or clothes on the furniture. There are hooks behind the doors or on the clothes airer in the balcony.
4. Remember to switch off the stove/oven/lights afterwards.
5. Pull over the shower curtain when taking a shower so you will have a dry and comfy bathroom.
6. Please have music/movie at a moderate volume for our lovely neighbours.
7. Wash the dirty dishes/cutlery/etc after use. Please don't leave them behind.
Rachel and Joel were wonderful hosts. The place is very cool and clean and the bed extremely comfortable. Newtown is a great part of Sydney and we had a blast just staying in the area. Thanks for hosting!
Joel and Rachel are the perfect host. The lovely couple shared local expert tips of things to do and where to eat. Their good taste never failed us. The cosy apartment is full of characteristic and spotless with a touch of green. Great location in New Town and very easy to get around other parts of Sydney.
Definitely recommended to stay and we'll surely come back again!
Joel and Rachel were very welcoming. Knowing it was our first trip to Newtown they provided us with a map and had written different areas of interest and "must see's". They are as described in their listing very easy going and respective of guests privacy as well. The room was bright and airy, a little tight with suitcases but there is enough storage provided in the closet to hang clothes or have some folded. The bed was also comfortable with big pillows and duvet.
The noise from the overhead airplanes leaving the airport were new to me (only when the window was open) but was something you eventually got used to.
There was always bread, honey, peanut butter, eggs, milk, coffee etc available for breakfast and showering products in the bathroom.
Laundry was easy to use with drying rack available on the balcony.
Overall great experience and great people!! Newtown is a fun and interesting area and is perfectly described in this ad.
It was lovely to meet Joel and Rachel, they made as feel very welcme in their home. They gave us clear instructions on the location and how to access their apartment if not home. A lovely welcome note greeted us on our arrival, as well as a map of the area and recommended places to eat and drink. It was lovely to be supplied a light breakfast the following morning to start our day. Free wifi was also a bonus. Location was great, walking distance to Newtown station, numerous cafes, restaurant and bars, and the Enmore Theatre. Definitely recommend a night here after a show. Thanks again.
We were coming to Sydney for a quick weekend experience, and looking for something in the heart of Newtown and accessible to public transport.
Joel and Rachel were perfect hosts - considerate and thoughtful, they even delayed their plans to meet us for check in after we were waylaid by Newtown's shopping strip. ;)
Their home is in a perfect location, just set back from the busy King St area. With a unique, quirky style that blends feminine retro with eclectic plants and a soothing colour palette, they have created a gorgeous home.
We were in and out over the weekend to attend various functions and it was always rejuvenating to come back to this little pad. We would definitely recommend Joel and Rachel's place and, in fact, it reminded us of what was so appealing and wonderful about Air B'n'B in the first place - the chance to stay in lovely homes and to meet wonderful locals on your travels.
Joel & Rachel were the perfect hosts — so welcoming and kind! Rachel was super helpful to me throughout my brief stay. She gave me public transportation advice and an awesome restaurant recommendation. She was very good with communication both before and during my stay. She also laid out a full breakfast spread for me (cereal, bread for toast, jams, etc + coffees and teas.)
Their place was just as described on their listing — very cool and artsy in the awesome, funky neighborhood of Newtown. The apartment is only about a 7 minute walk from the Newtown train station, making it convenient to get to anywhere in the city (only about 17-18 minutes to Circular Quay from their stop.)
Would definitely highly recommend!
Joel and Rachel were great hosts. They were helpful providing us with names of good places to eat and a fan on a really hot day! I forgot a bag at their place and Rachel has offered to help me get back. :-)
The location was amazing-so close to King St which was exactly what we wanted. The room was comfortable and the apartment decorated beautifully.
