About this listing

El Rafal is a charming, rustic private cabina located 1.5 miles south of Montezuma and 1.5 miles north of Cabuya. The house faces the ocean which is only 20 meters away. A protected green zone separates the house from the ocean and a tiny sandy beach with rock formations ideal for fishing, yoga, and bond fires. Monkeys and iguanas frequent the property. A larger sandy beach and Rio Cedros is only a five minute walk from the property.

The space

El Rafal is encircled by beautiful tropical gardens on approximately 1.5 acres or 6150m2 of private property. The house is approximately 4m X 20m (13' X 70'equalling 750sf) not including the 3 large patios. Each bedroom has a private keyed entrance with a covered porch, sitting area and clothes line. El Rafal is located in a quiet, secluded area, with only 2 other homes nearby. Safe, gated, off street parking is included.

El Rafal is perfect for groups of mature millennials. It is ideal for couples traveling together who want communal areas and private , secure bedrooms. Families with children over 3 years old will enjoy the property.

Each 3 x 4 meter bedroom has a private attached bathroom with toilet/sink/and shower. One bedroom is furnished with a double bed and the other bedroom is furnished with a double and 2 single bunk beds for a family with children. Large windows on opposite sides of the room allow cross breezes to circulate and cool the space naturally. Each bedroom has a safe, ceiling fan and floor fan. Both bedroom doors open to the exterior and do not have interior kitchen access.

El Rafal was built with outdoor living in mind as is all traditional Costa Rica housing ....Our guests spend most of their time hanging out in hammocks under the large patios....after spending hours at the beach.

The bedrooms are separated by a large furnished kitchen. The kitchen has a 3 burner stove top, toaster oven, and full size refrigerator. You will find a coffee maker and blender in the kitchen. The kitchen opens onto a long 8' X 58' covered patio. The patio is perfect for outdoor dining, checking your email, playing cards or simply lounging in a hammock while creating wonderful memories with friends and family.

Guest access

The 1 .5 acre or 6150m2 of private property is fenced with live tropical plants. Private parking, telephone and wifi are included. There is also a refreshing outdoor shower for use after a long day at the beach. Guests will find banana, star fruit, and 3 different types of lime trees on the property. All of which are here for your enjoyment. There is a small charcoal outdoor "tico" grill available for fresh fish and burgers...Guests will also find a large garden table available for cleaning today's catch. There is a small plant nursery. This year the owners added a rustic out door bread oven!

Interaction with guests

I do not live on the property, but can be there within 10 minutes. My husband and I are available 24 hours a day for emergencies. We want your time with us to be a very happy memory. No question is a stupid question. I will give you all the local tips!

The neighborhood

El Rafal is located between the town of Montezuma (3 kilometers south) and the tiny fishing village of Cabuya (3 kilometers north).

Montezuma has become one of 'the top 10 places' to visit in Costa Rica. It has many shops, restaurants, sodas, and artisans. Local night life happens at Chico's Bar and the Montezuma Bar. Dining in Montezuma is diverse with more than a dozen restaurants ranging from Tico sodas' to gourmet meals with prices and flavors to suit every budget. There is an organic market on Saturday mornings in the park. Fresh organic produce and local products including souvenirs are sold as the community gathers to visit with friends and neighbors. There are several tour offices to help you arrange deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, Tortuga Island, and horseback tours. Montezuma has a canopy zip-line tour that allows you to 'fly' over rivers and waterfalls. There is a larger waterfall and swimming hole located just before you leave Montezuma. A short 20 minute hike up the river will take you to the falls.

Cabuya is a tiny fishing village where one can experience the real Costa Rica. Tourism has not made many changes here. Cabuya's cemetery is located on an uninhabited island that is accessible from the mainland only during low tide. The island is beautiful and some of the best snorkeling in the area is found in the waters off the island. Cabuya is close to the Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Preserve, which is a must see for nature lovers.
Please contact Leanne if you want her to advise or help you reserve an activity...

El Rafal is located at one of the top five destinations for fishing from shore & surfing in this area. Anglers, bring your fishing pole or learn to fish like a local with a 'carrete'. If you surf, the long left point break of Los Cedros is a favorite among tourists and locals.

Rio Las Cedros is a small river with a small waterfall that drops into a freshwater lagoon not far from El Rafal. This clear freshwater swimming hole has a rope swing that is sure to delight children and the child within you!

Getting around

It is not necessary to rent a car during your stay at El Rafal. It is a 25-30 minute walk to Montezuma and a 45 minute walk to Cabuya. There are local taxis that cost $8 - $10 each way to El Rafal. There is also a small bus that runs daily between Montezuma and Cabuya. It stops on the road next to behind El Rafal.

Other things to note

I am happy to furnish maps, directions, and local knowledge of this area. All you need to do is ask!

We saw more wildlife here than any reserve or national park in Costa Rica... The house is great. You spend most of your time out on the porch, and are literally 100 feet away from the beach. It's about a 2 mile walk from Montezuma but you can take a taxi for around 6$ each way. The place is awesome, Leanne is great, and the beach is a 10

3 of my girl friends and I flew into Liberia and drove down to Montezuma. Leanne was in constant communication with us the whole time prior to and on the trip. We met her at her house, and she drove us out to El Rafal, as there are no street signs or road names in Costa Rica (western Costa Rica, anyway). Leanne and her husband Ron were SO helpful the whole trip. The very first night we were there, we got scared (probably unnecessarily) and we wanted Ron to come and check out the property. He was there within 5 minutes, walked around with a flashlight for five minutes, and then drove around the property for 5 minutes to make sure there was nobody else on the lot (which there wasn't...again, this is a safe town if you're smart and don't invite people back over, so we were probably just being paranoid). We also ran into a couple other issues (our car battery died, we got locked out of our room, we forgot a passport back in the safe at the house on our way to the airport, etc.) and Leanne and Ron were there to help out in every way they could and FAST. The house is perfect if you want the true Costa Rican experience. A one minute walk away from the house will land you directly in front of a beautiful beach with waves crashing. It's about a 20 minute walk to town (which we had to end up doing when our car battery died) and it's a great way to truly experience Costa Rica. A lot of dogs will join you on your way, as well! This town has a lot of dogs. It seems that a lot of them are not "owned" by a single person, but they will just walk around and they must be taken care of/fed by the town since they are not skinny. If ever I go back to Costa Rica, I will be going back to Montezuma and staying at El Rafal. It was truly such a great experience and my 3 girl friends and I had a blast. Please feel free to message me if you have any questions! :) - Courtney R.

Hello Leanne and Ron !!! We wish you both all the best and thank you deeply for your generosity and reliability. You, Leanne, who even in the middle of the night came over and helped us, and you Ron, who shared all this time with us showing us the best places in Montezuma and around. We are deeply grateful for all your positive energy !!! El Rafal is a perfect house to spend some time in that nature. So many different animals and birds coming around for breakfast !!! And the beach just few meters makes it ideal to end an evening watching the stars before sleeping !!! THANK YOU. Laure & Bruno.

It was one of the most incredible spots we have stayed in and were so happy we booked 5 nights. We loved the privacy and having the whole street and beaches to ourselves was exactly what we wanted! All of the creatures we discovered were extra bonuses. Thank you!!

We really enjoyed our stay at El Rafal! There was more than enough space for just the two of us. Everything was clean and the kitchen was well stocked making it very easy to cook. There is a landline to call taxis and it costed about $8 US to get into town. There is also a bus that stops just up the road 4 times a day although we didn't use it as the timing was never quite right for us. It would have been much easier if we had had a car. The beach across the street was nice but pretty rocky so we didn't go swimming there. Leanne was so helpful and made us feel welcome. Would definitely recommend. Oh and we loved having an outdoor shower!!!

El Rafal is a magical place! We loved our stay here and wished we stayed more than 3 nights. The yard is wild and beautiful, with plenty of tropical flowers, fruit trees (the limes were delicious on everything) and animals. There are also plenty of chairs, tables, a little bbq and an outdoor shower. The house is very open, the kitchen has two barn doors opening onto the porch, which made for a perfect spot to cook and eat outside. The beach is very close, you can hear the waves from the house. It's sandy with a few rocks, and great for swimming in the clear blue water. There lots of tide pools and rocks to explore as well, and a larger beach just a short walk down. Leanne was wonderful, she picked us up in Montezuma and was totally available for any questions or advice we needed. There is a landline in the house for making local calls, so it is easy to reach her, call a taxi or book your surfing lessons. Definitely take surfing with Pablo, he is such a great teacher and person. We did not have a car, which was perfectly fine. The town is a 20 min walk or a quick bus or taxi away. We even walked to town along the rocky beach once which was a gorgeous hike. The house is really perfect for people who are looking to cook at home and the enjoy quiet privacy away from town. You can also rent ATVs in town which would be perfect for getting around. While the house is very clean, well built and lovely, this isn't a luxury experience, so look forward to seeing iguanas, bugs and hear loud birds early in the morning. Welcome to the jungle! Definitely will be coming back to El Rafal in the future.
