El Rafal is located between the town of Montezuma (3 kilometers south) and the tiny fishing village of Cabuya (3 kilometers north).
Montezuma has become one of 'the top 10 places' to visit in Costa Rica. It has many shops, restaurants, sodas, and artisans. Local night life happens at Chico's Bar and the Montezuma Bar. Dining in Montezuma is diverse with more than a dozen restaurants ranging from Tico sodas' to gourmet meals with prices and flavors to suit every budget. There is an organic market on Saturday mornings in the park. Fresh organic produce and local products including souvenirs are sold as the community gathers to visit with friends and neighbors. There are several tour offices to help you arrange deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, Tortuga Island, and horseback tours. Montezuma has a canopy zip-line tour that allows you to 'fly' over rivers and waterfalls. There is a larger waterfall and swimming hole located just before you leave Montezuma. A short 20 minute hike up the river will take you to the falls.
Cabuya is a tiny fishing village where one can experience the real Costa Rica. Tourism has not made many changes here. Cabuya's cemetery is located on an uninhabited island that is accessible from the mainland only during low tide. The island is beautiful and some of the best snorkeling in the area is found in the waters off the island. Cabuya is close to the Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Preserve, which is a must see for nature lovers.
Please contact Leanne if you want her to advise or help you reserve an activity...
El Rafal is located at one of the top five destinations for fishing from shore & surfing in this area. Anglers, bring your fishing pole or learn to fish like a local with a 'carrete'. If you surf, the long left point break of Los Cedros is a favorite among tourists and locals.
Rio Las Cedros is a small river with a small waterfall that drops into a freshwater lagoon not far from El Rafal. This clear freshwater swimming hole has a rope swing that is sure to delight children and the child within you!
It is not necessary to rent a car during your stay at El Rafal. It is a 25-30 minute walk to Montezuma and a 45 minute walk to Cabuya. There are local taxis that cost $4-$6 each way to El Rafal. There is also a small bus that runs daily between Montezuma and Cabuya. It stops on the road next to El Rafal. Please be advised the bus does not run after dark. We recommend renting a 4x4 SUV or ATV so you can explore the surrounding area....there is so much to see and do....
Other Things to Note
Leanne is happy to furnish maps, directions, and local knowledge of this area. All you need to do is ask!
Please enjoy and treat the home as if it was your own. We ask that you do not smoke indoors. Pets are welcome, if well trained and approved in advance. Please do not feed the local wildlife. Especially the white face monkeys! Pura Vida!
We had a great time! Leanne picked us up from Montezuma and after we had bought our supplies we drove together to the property el rafal. By car it takes you 10 minutes and if you walk it takes about 20-30 minutes to Montezuma. The house was very clean and the area was peaceful. The kitchen had everything you need to cook. We did not have to buy water because the house was connected to a private spring. The garden had a shower and even two starfruit trees and a plantain tree, unfortunately the plantains were not ready but the starfruit was great. In the garden you will see Leanne's Love for detail. Nice flowers, the jungle shower and sometimes animals will pay you a visit by passing by. Leanne told us also about this fischer man not far away, where you can buy fresh tasty and cheap fish! The house has a telephone from where you can call Leanne any time. In the house you will find a sheath and a magazine with helpful information about bus intervals, tours and also the number of a taxi driver. Do not miss out the sunrise you can see at the private beach! We were very happy to have chosen this place for our stay. It was very relaxing and calm. I was actually really sad when we had to leave.. :( but everything has its end.
Muchas gracias!
The house is beautiful and very cosy and offers everything you could need to spend a few nice days on the Pacific coast, a little bit away from the tourist-life in Montezuma, yet not isolated. Passing through the beautiful garden and crossing a small road in a few seconds you are on a beautiful yet rocky beach, and just a little bit more than 150 meters from there you get to a beach which is good for bathing.
Leanne was a perfect and very friendly host, easy to get in contact whith, although there was little need to reach her as she had preparred everything in a perfect way. Thanks a lot!
We really enjoyed our stay at El Rafal! The porch is expansive and provides a great place for reading and relaxing. We also saw multiple iguanas in the front yard, which was really neat. You can hear the ocean from the house and it is a quick walk down to the water. The house is a ways out of Montezuma, but we had a car and it was no trouble driving into town. One thing to note is that the house is split up - with the kitchen in the middle and the bedrooms on each side, with no internal access to the kitchen from the bedrooms. Also, as Leanne will mention, it's the jungle and the bugs can be pesky. That aside, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and highly recommend El Rafal. We are also grateful to Leanne for her friendly assistance!
We enjoyed El Rafal so much. It was a beautiful retreat and wonderful getaway.
The three of us had a very relaxing time with the family of friendly iguanas in the garden.
Swimming beach is under 4 min walk away and there was a private cove right across from our front gate.
Leanne was so friendly and so helpful and was waiting for us when we arrived in Montezuma.
Our first night we had a tropical storm but the house is so protected by beautiful forest it was fine. Interent / phone went out during the storm but Leanne’s husband Ron did not even have to be called. He came down the next morning ang it back up for us. Both are great folks and super warm, friendly, caring and helpful.
We needed solo time and to de-stress and El Rafal is perfect for this. The market in town is @ a mile or less walk but one can always call a cab and they will come get you for a minimal cost. We preferred this to car renting.
Kitchen is quite adequate for cooking. Loved the artistic touches and beach/country feeling of the place. Great close location to other little beach towns around if you want a change of scene for the day.
All in all a wonderful find!
Leanne and El Rafal was wonderful! We stayed for four days/three nights and it was the perfect amount of time. Leanne was very accommodating and always ready to help or answer any questions. The beach is wonderful and everything is pretty close. The walk to town was not horrible at all, but it did take about 20-25min, but getting a taxi was never difficult. l would definitely recommend this place to anyone. Don't expect 5 star hotel conditions, it's more of a camping/ cabin experience, but it was definitely a great find and a great deal!
Leanne was super helpful, and was available at all times by phone if we needed anything. She was also great with recommendations for the area. I would suggest if staying at El Rafal to rent a car (suv, truck, jeep, or something with 4-wheel drive) or ATVs when you get there. It is a little drive from the center of town. We loved the outdoor shower and hammock on the front porch. It can definitely get hot at night, so be prepared for a kind of upgraded camping experience. Each room does have a standup fan, but it can still be pretty hot and humid depending what time of year you go. We went mid-May. Not the most comfortable beds, but we were so tired after our long days, it didn't really matter. If you're looking for a rustic stay, a little more remote, I would suggest el Rafal. Great for young travelers.
Although this is not the easiest place to get to, it is probably the best place to stay. I think the house is nicer than the pictures indicate. It is close to the town, beaches, a nature preserve. and a beautiful butterfly garden.
Just be aware this area is hot and without breezes. The roads around Montezuma are very poor.
But, Leanne is wonderful and very helpful. So glad we were able to meet her!
