El Rafal or The Patio is a charming home located 1.5 miles south of Montezuma. It is surrounded by sandy beaches and rock formations ideal for fishing, beach-combing, and 'getting away from it all'. El Rafal faces the ocean and is encircled by beautiful tropical gardens on approximately 6150m2 of private property. There is a beautiful private beach just 50 meters from the patio. The house is located in a quiet, private area, with only 3 homes nearby. Safe, off street parking is included.
Each bedroom has a safe and en suite bath. One bedroom is furnished with a double bed and the second bedroom is furnished with a double bed and bunk beds that sleep two. Large windows allow sea breezes to circulate and cool the rooms naturally. The bedrooms are separated by a fully furnished kitchen which opens onto a large covered patio facing the ocean. The patio is the perfect for outdoor dining or simply lounging in a hammock, while creating wonderful memories with friends and family.
El Rafal is located at one of the top five destinations for fishing from shore & surfing in this area. Anglers, bring your fishing pole or learn to fish like a local with a 'carrete'. If you surf, the long left point break of Los Cedros is a favorite among tourists and locals. Cedros beach is uncrowded and perfect for swimming, sun bathing, and shelling.
A quiet river with a small waterfall that drops into a freshwater lagoon is not far from El Rafal. This clear freshwater swimming hole has a rope swing that is sure to delight children and the child within you!
The house is located between the town of Montezuma (3 kilometers south) and the tiny fishing village of Cabuya (3 kilometers north).
Montezuma has become one of 'the places' to visit in Costa Rica. It has many shops, restaurants, sodas, and artisans. Local night life happens at Chico's Bar and the Montezuma Bar. Dining in Montezuma is diverse with more than a dozen restaurants ranging from Tico 'sodas' to gourmet meals with prices and flavors to suit every budget. There is an organic market on Saturday mornings in the park. Fresh organic produce and local products including souvenirs are sold as the community gathers to visit with friends and neighbors. There are several tour offices to help you arrange deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, Tortuga Island, and horseback tours. Montezuma has a canopy zip-line tour that allows you to 'fly' over rivers and waterfalls. There is a larger waterfall and swimming hole located just before you leave Montezuma. A short 20 minute hike up the river will take you to the falls.
Cabuya is a tiny fishing village where one can get to know real Ticos. Tourism has not made many changes here. Cabuya's cemetery is located on an uninhabited island that is accessible from the mainland only during low tide. The island is beautiful and some of the best snorkeling in the area is found in the waters off the island. Cabuya is close to the Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Preserve, which is a must see for nature lovers.
It is not absolutely necessary to rent a car while you stay at El Rafal. It is about a 30 minute walk to Montezuma and about 45 minutes to Cabuya. There are local taxis and a bus that runs daily.
Leanne was a wonderful host, and the house was a great jungle escape! Leanne was easy to contact for questions before and during our stay, and we had fresh coffee waiting at the house for us when we arrived. The house is about a 20-30 minute walk from the town of Montezuma, but in a beautiful area with nobody to disturb our stay. The open kitchen setup was great for cooking family style meals, we spent a lot of time around the big patio table enjoying the many birds and lizards that are all around the house. Definitely recommended!
El Rafal is by far the best place we stayed in Costa Rica -- we went to Arenal, Monteverde, and other beaches on the Nicoya Peninsula, which were nowhere near as funky/nice and it was only $10 more per person a night!
The set up of the house is really cool: all situated around the front porch. The kitchen is open, and the two bedrooms are located at either end of the house. I wouldn't recommend this place for families with young children, but it would be perfect for couples or groups of adults looking for a breezy, simple, outdoor-oriented space.
There was really good coffee in the pantry and a bottle of wine waiting for us upon arrival. Leanne drove us to the place and walked us around the property -- she's a great host! Very communicative, warm, knowledgeable and gave us some great suggestions for things to do in the area.
The beaches are rocky here, but you can find some sandy spots not too far from El Rafal. Highly recommended.
We had a great time @ the house. It was comfortable and quiet and the shoreline is stunningly beautiful (not the best for swimming but there is a river close by that was nice). Leanne was gracious and very helpful.
Leanne is such a nice and smiling person! She gave us good tips for activities to do around. The walk to the waterfalls nearby is worth it; very refreshing! The fish from Cabuya (she recommanded us to buy it fresh from the fisherman, a neat idea!) was absolutely delicious! Montezuma town is beautiful and pleasant. We enjoyed our stay at El Rafal, our nights spent on the patio playing cards while the babies were already sleeping, and the activities we could do around. Our only regret: we couldn't surf during our stay; the waves being too strong and dangerous, the surf lessons were cancelled for the week... El Rafal was our best accomodation expérience so far with Air B&B in Costa Rica. We would definitely come back to El Rafal in a further trip in Costa Rica!
I had a wonderful stay at El Rafal. A beautiful house equipped with everything you could need. It's just a short drive or 20 minute walk from the town of Montezuma with a beautiful beach steps from the front porch.
Leanne was extremely friendly and helpful. 5 stars!!
