El Rafal is a charming, rustic private cabina located 1.5 miles south of Montezuma and 1.5 miles north of Cabuya. The house faces the ocean which is only 20 meters away. A protected green zone separates the house from the ocean and a tiny sandy beach with rock formations ideal for fishing, yoga, and bond fires. Monkeys and iguanas frequent the property. A larger sandy beach and Rio Cedros is only a five minute walk from the property.

The space

El Rafal is encircled by beautiful tropical gardens on approximately 1.5 acres or 6150m2 of private property. The house is approximately 4m X 20m (13' X 70'equalling 750sf) not including the 3 large patios. Each bedroom has a private keyed entrance with a covered porch, sitting area and clothes line. El Rafal is located in a quiet, secluded area, with only 2 other homes nearby. Safe, gated, off street parking is included.

El Rafal is perfect for groups of mature millennials. It is ideal for couples traveling together who want communal areas and private , secure bedrooms. Families with children over 3 years old will enjoy the property.

Each 3 x 4 meter bedroom has a private attached bathroom with toilet/sink/and shower. One bedroom is furnished with a double bed and the other bedroom is furnished with a double and 2 single bunk beds for a family with children. Large windows on opposite sides of the room allow cross breezes to circulate and cool the space naturally. Each bedroom has a safe, ceiling fan and floor fan. Both bedroom doors open to the exterior and do not have interior kitchen access.

El Rafal was built with outdoor living in mind as is all traditional Costa Rica housing ....Our guests spend most of their time hanging out in hammocks under the large patios....after spending hours at the beach.

The bedrooms are separated by a large furnished kitchen. The kitchen has a 3 burner stove top, toaster oven, and full size refrigerator. You will find a coffee maker and blender in the kitchen. The kitchen opens onto a long 8' X 58' covered patio. The patio is perfect for outdoor dining, checking your email, playing cards or simply lounging in a hammock while creating wonderful memories with friends and family.

Guest access

The 1 .5 acre or 6150m2 of private property is fenced with live tropical plants. Private parking, telephone and wifi are included. There is also a refreshing outdoor shower for use after a long day at the beach. Guests will find banana, star fruit, and 3 different types of lime trees on the property. All of which are here for your enjoyment. There is a small charcoal outdoor "tico" grill available for fresh fish and burgers...Guests will also find a large garden table available for cleaning today's catch. There is a small plant nursery. This year the owners added a rustic out door bread oven!

Interaction with guests

I do not live on the property, but can be there within 10 minutes. My husband and I are available 24 hours a day for emergencies. We want your time with us to be a very happy memory. No question is a stupid question. I will give you all the local tips!

We saw more wildlife here than any reserve or national park in Costa Rica... The house is great. You spend most of your time out on the porch, and are literally 100 feet away from the beach. It's about a 2 mile walk from Montezuma but you can take a taxi for around 6$ each way. The place is awesome, Leanne is great, and the beach is a 10

3 of my girl friends and I flew into Liberia and drove down to Montezuma. Leanne was in constant communication with us the whole time prior to and on the trip. We met her at her house, and she drove us out to El Rafal, as there are no street signs or road names in Costa Rica (western Costa Rica, anyway). Leanne and her husband Ron were SO helpful the whole trip. The very first night we were there, we got scared (probably unnecessarily) and we wanted Ron to come and check out the property. He was there within 5 minutes, walked around with a flashlight for five minutes, and then drove around the property for 5 minutes to make sure there was nobody else on the lot (which there wasn't...again, this is a safe town if you're smart and don't invite people back over, so we were probably just being paranoid). We also ran into a couple other issues (our car battery died, we got locked out of our room, we forgot a passport back in the safe at the house on our way to the airport, etc.) and Leanne and Ron were there to help out in every way they could and FAST. The house is perfect if you want the true Costa Rican experience. A one minute walk away from the house will land you directly in front of a beautiful beach with waves crashing. It's about a 20 minute walk to town (which we had to end up doing when our car battery died) and it's a great way to truly experience Costa Rica. A lot of dogs will join you on your way, as well! This town has a lot of dogs. It seems that a lot of them are not "owned" by a single person, but they will just walk around and they must be taken care of/fed by the town since they are not skinny. If ever I go back to Costa Rica, I will be going back to Montezuma and staying at El Rafal. It was truly such a great experience and my 3 girl friends and I had a blast. Please feel free to message me if you have any questions! :) - Courtney R.

El Rafal is a magical place! We loved our stay here and wished we stayed more than 3 nights. The yard is wild and beautiful, with plenty of tropical flowers, fruit trees (the limes were delicious on everything) and animals. There are also plenty of chairs, tables, a little bbq and an outdoor shower. The house is very open, the kitchen has two barn doors opening onto the porch, which made for a perfect spot to cook and eat outside. The beach is very close, you can hear the waves from the house. It's sandy with a few rocks, and great for swimming in the clear blue water. There lots of tide pools and rocks to explore as well, and a larger beach just a short walk down. Leanne was wonderful, she picked us up in Montezuma and was totally available for any questions or advice we needed. There is a landline in the house for making local calls, so it is easy to reach her, call a taxi or book your surfing lessons. Definitely take surfing with Pablo, he is such a great teacher and person. We did not have a car, which was perfectly fine. The town is a 20 min walk or a quick bus or taxi away. We even walked to town along the rocky beach once which was a gorgeous hike. The house is really perfect for people who are looking to cook at home and the enjoy quiet privacy away from town. You can also rent ATVs in town which would be perfect for getting around. While the house is very clean, well built and lovely, this isn't a luxury experience, so look forward to seeing iguanas, bugs and hear loud birds early in the morning. Welcome to the jungle! Definitely will be coming back to El Rafal in the future.

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay at this home in Montezuma! We ended up arriving to Montezuma several hours earlier than expected because the roads where better than expected. Leanne had great communication before we arrived, giving us perfect instructions on how to find her home and then explained that they would then escort us to the home. Since we were so early her husband took us. He was very lovely, stopping to tell us a dangerous place to avoid swimming and then giving us many recommendations for food options. We enjoyed the house itself, and its worth noting that we stayed here with another couple. The 2 rooms entry doors are on the outside far left and far right sides of the house. It was perfect for us to have to totally separate spaces and bathrooms. There are great safes for passports and things in each room. The kitchen was equipped... bare bones if your planning on doing any real cooking. We made eggs and toast with fruit for breakfast each morning. We had taken Leanne's recommendation for stopping in Cobano for groceries and were really glad we did. There is no AC in the home, but a fan for each room and kitchen. One of the days we were there was sweltering with no breeze, but the rest of the time was pleasant. The Wifi worked very well. The beach is so private and we found lots of really great seashells there. We did lots of walking while there and found so many lizards and monkeys! In all, I'd say if your looking for a place that is remote, basic yet comfortable, but offers lots of little adventures, Montezuma is a great little hippy town and this house (about a 10 min drive) is a great place to stay!

We really enjoyed our stay at El Rafal! The porch is expansive and provides a great place for reading and relaxing. We also saw multiple iguanas in the front yard, which was really neat. You can hear the ocean from the house and it is a quick walk down to the water. The house is a ways out of Montezuma, but we had a car and it was no trouble driving into town. One thing to note is that the house is split up - with the kitchen in the middle and the bedrooms on each side, with no internal access to the kitchen from the bedrooms. Also, as Leanne will mention, it's the jungle and the bugs can be pesky. That aside, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and highly recommend El Rafal. We are also grateful to Leanne for her friendly assistance!

We enjoyed El Rafal so much. It was a beautiful retreat and wonderful getaway. The three of us had a very relaxing time with the family of friendly iguanas in the garden. Swimming beach is under 4 min walk away and there was a private cove right across from our front gate. Leanne was so friendly and so helpful and was waiting for us when we arrived in Montezuma. Our first night we had a tropical storm but the house is so protected by beautiful forest it was fine. Interent / phone went out during the storm but Leanne’s husband Ron did not even have to be called. He came down the next morning ang it back up for us. Both are great folks and super warm, friendly, caring and helpful. We needed solo time and to de-stress and El Rafal is perfect for this. The market in town is @ a mile or less walk but one can always call a cab and they will come get you for a minimal cost. We preferred this to car renting. Kitchen is quite adequate for cooking. Loved the artistic touches and beach/country feeling of the place. Great close location to other little beach towns around if you want a change of scene for the day. All in all a wonderful find!
