  • A highlight of our trip to Maui was staying in this lovely home - magnificent views from every angle with great expanses of ocean! Fun to see all of the wind surfers and kite boarders 'flying about' on the waves from a bird's eye view on the private lawn just above the beach. Kristen was a gracious host who was attentive to having the house ready. Kitchen well equipped for making meals if wanted - we made breakfast each morning. We stayed in the Nautical room and I would definitely recommend it! In fact, many of my friends have already asked for the link once seeing my pics!

    You guys are very cool!

  • There is a super great ocean view and private beach in Mark's house. And the super big kitchen is convenient and helpful. That is a quiet villa, on the Hana road and not far away from Lahaina. Everything was great living there. Thanks and best regards for Mark .

  • Unfortunately, my experience did not match the many positive reviews I read of Mark's property prior to booking. I will disclaim that I too rent my residence on Airbnb, and so I don't write negative reviews lightly and will try to be fair and constructive in my criticism (particularly because much of it is fixable).

The primary issues I had were:

1.) Lack of security: The inner and outer doors to the property and house are left unlocked more or less 24/7. The bedroom doors do not have locks at all and one of our fellow guests did not actually have a bedroom door. That's a big issue when you're staying in a house with strangers and also because the caretaker had a friend over to drink beers in one of the unrented bedrooms. Door locks are a cheap and easy retrofit that would go a long way for future guests, but at the very least it would be courteous to notify guests that rooms do not lock.

2.) Info sheet: I would hugely recommend an info sheet printed out for all guests - it works wonders, especially for big properties! It's not all that obvious which areas in this house lead to common areas vs. private areas, which is definitely concerning if you're staying in one of the doorless bedrooms.

3.) Dirty: the bathroom in particular was extremely dirty (uncleaned toilet, dust and dirt all over; rust, mold, and grime along the windows and fixtures); the room's window blinds were absolutely caked in dust; there was extensive water damage and peeling paint along the walls and ceiling all over the house.

4.) Unkempt: I understand it's hard to keep a property immaculate - my wife and I go to huge efforts to leave a clean home for our guests - but it's probably the single most important thing within a host's control. The house just felt dingy - old beds, old linens, unswept debris, used cleaning bottles, and leaves all over the courtyard/outdoor areas, non-operational fountain with stagnant moldy standing water, and kind of a 'wet dog smell' throughout the house.

To be fair on a few points - the house has great views of Maui's windy and rugged north shore and the kitchen was the one area that did feel clean. Mark was also a prompt communicator. My issues may or may not matter to some travelers who just want the best view possible - but that can be had in many places across Maui. I hope this is helpful for improving the experience for future travelers and for prospective guests deciding if the property is right for their stay.

    Response from Mark:

Sorry you did not enjoy your stay.
We have painted the Fountain Suites bathroom (it was badly needed) and installed deadbolt locks on the door...we did this a few days ago.
Not sure why your toilet was dirty; I pay good money to cleaners to clean the rooms properly.
    All the best to you.

  • It is one of the must beautifully place that I rented,
Right on the beach, perfect waves right in front.
Super close to paia town 6 minutes!
And special thanks to the host Kristen, she was great and super helpfully, I will be back here when I am back in Maui.

  • My stay at the Fountain Suite was the definition of paradise. The house is perfectly located. It's a little tucked away but as long as you have GPS, you will not have a problem. You are steps away from Mama's Fish House (where you must dine if you stay there!), a minute from Ho'opika Beach (surfer's haven) and a mile from heart of the adorable town of Paia which is full of yoga studios, shops & restaurants. I had a rental car, but prefer to walk & was able to do so easily. The photos on the site do complete justice to the beauty that will surround you at the house. I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Mark, but Kristen was a gracious, friendly, & helpful host. The other guests were lovely. I was traveling alone & staying there as a single female, I felt completely safe. You will be nothing less than thrilled if you stay there. Enjoy!
