An incredibly beautiful room in an old rustic farm house! Located in an organic farm and a sustainability activity centre with natural buildings, farm animals and organic gardens. Our guests leave saying "a really nice different experience and great project" because it's more than a place to be hosted, "it's unique". You can taste fresh veggies and herbs from our garden and baked bread. Very close to Sintra village, natural parks and seaside beaches!

The space

We are a collective of people united to build and live a non-formal education center for sustainability. Since 2012, we already built a multi-sectoral project with many areas of intervention such as: agriculture, forestry, carpentry, animal management, seed and plant nursery, eco-construction, organic mushroom production, cider and homemade beer production and many other activities for visitors and outside students.

The entire project is typically country life, and the main farmhouse was built by an antiquarian. The main farmhouse has many old rustic objects (wood and stone), together with the gardens, everything creates an incredible way of experience something different.

The place is near the ocean so if you have your own car or bike you can go to that beautiful landscapes very easily (5 min car, 10 min bike, 30 min walking).

You can easily go to Sintra Village cultural center. By car is around 10 to 15 min (depends the place) and there are few buses during the day from Janas to Sintra. We can also suggest good places for you to visit.

We know Sintra region very well and we can suggest you really good places for you to visit around the area: restaurants, seaside cliffs, roads to hike or bike, beaches, natural parks and cultural living. Also a lot of tips for Lisbon, cause we lived there many years in the past.

By curiosity you can look to our fbook page to see some activities and more photos about our place. You will enjoy that.

Guest access

You can visit the whole project, the natural buildings outside, the permaculture and medicinal gardens, the tree nursery, the carpentry workshop and the animal homes.

In the main house you can use the entrances, the glass veranda, the big stone table outside, the common saloon with rustic sofas, a little library and a magic big fireplace heater, the corridor with fire heater, the kitchen and the toilet. Free wi-fi in all the places.

You can use the kitchen to cook. There are 2 shops in Janas village where you can find the majority or your needs. We also produce organic veggies and fruits so you can order to cook. We have a fridge where you can store your food.

We have a free car parking on the property. We have laundry machine and place to dry clothes if necessary.

As we said on the descriptions, the toilet&bathroom is shared by everyone, we have one for guests and another for the living&volunteering team so we can assure some separation.

Interaction with guests

While you are here, you can meet a team of residents and volunteers, building and developing the sustainability learning center. Usually we are a team of 3 living permanently, plus the worldwide and nacional helpers that come for volunteering seasons.

We are fluent in Portuguese, English, German, Spanish and Chinese.

There will be always someone to support you!

Sometimes you can join the dinners with the team. As you see in our feedbacks, the meals are very interesting because you can meet many countries at the same time and share experiences of life.

Our first objective, as a learning center, is to create a worldwide network so we open the house to Airbnb experience as it is a non-formal model to receive guests, where they can experience our livelihood and see all the building eco-project. From our side, we can share our knowledge and experience, and pass through the message that a sustainable lifestyle is possible :)

Other things to note

We have farm animals (outside in indicated shelters) and also domestic cats and a dog. The cats used to live inside the house, we assure that they don't enter the rooms. All the animals are friendly.

The place is suitable for children. For the very little ones we ask that parents stay besides them when they are playing around the farm.

If you want to join lunch/dinner with the team (6,5euro per meal), we kindly ask you to advise in advance. Also if you have any special condition (celiac, vegan, allergies)

We have wireless internet in the house. As we are a big group, if we are all using the internet at the same time, the speed may slow down. It is rare to happen but it's always good warning.

We live a non-formal educational project and at the weekends we organize workshops or teachings or cultural events on many subjects: agriculture, beekeeping, carpentry, essential oils, natural cosmetics, tree propagation, green energy and many others.

Many of the workshops are outside on the fields but the theoretical part sometime takes place in the big saloon and a lot of participants ask to have meals with the team, so all the living during the weekends can be a little bit different.

There is always privacy in the individual rooms for the guests. We will support you in everything you need.

- Leave the room as you find it. Simple and clean :)
- Everyone respects the work or activities that the collaborators are doing. The best time to have good conversations is in break times or meal times. During work time, we might use machines and tools and it's good to be focused on that.
- Everyone cleans their own plates and dishes. If everyone does that, it's easy and simple for the collective!
- If you have animals with you, please inform us in advance, because we have farm animals and friendly dogs. We need to know the breeding dog race.
- You can smoke in the exterior side of the house, not inside.
- We do not support alcohol/drugs and we are not responsible for the individual action of the ones that do it. Those actions are not representative of the aims and principles of the co-founders of the project.

This place is wonderful! The main house is a fantastic old farm filled with things from a long gone past, furnished with taste and cure for details. The surroundings are great and very interesting. The residents are very nice people, the project they carry on is important and if you want to they are ready to explain. The place is situated in a quiet countryside, but is very confortable to reach any point of interest in the area, from beaches to cultural sites! We had a great time here!

If you are looking for a place to stay in Sintra, please stop now and book this place now! It is only 10-15min by car to Sintra in a small village called Janas. It is a permaculture farm and the place is very lovely and peaceful, which is shared by permanent members, wwoofers, and Airbnb guests. The main house and the room is very country rustic which we loved. The terrace outside and the garden is great to relax and soak up the sun. The dinner is sometime available for extra money and it is so worth it! Since they were able to accommodate my vegan diet, we had dinner two nights in a row! Everything except the rice and the beans were from the garden and it was so fresh and tasty!! They also run a restaurant and a health food store in town (5 min walk) which is also very lovely and worth a visit! (They have one vegetarian and one meat dish, vegan cakes, and soymilk latte!!) We would love to go back and visit again. Thank you Amandine and her staff!

Ecoaldeia De Janas is an amazing, one-of-a-kind place I would definitely recommend. The team was incredibly helpful - lots of details provided, great communication. There was a great community feel - wonderful people, amazing location. I enjoyed spending time with the other visitors and interacting with such a diverse, welcoming group of people. Unfortunately, I was only able to stay one night but I hope to make it back for a longer stay. (Be sure to request to join the team for meals. Dinner was OUTSTANDING!)

This is a very dark and old farmhouse with a wood burning stove and if you enjoy "roughing it" you will love sharing a bath room with five to ten other guests and possibly a very cold shower. The five people who are the Ecoaldeia De Janas (the group photo is people no longer there) are very friendly to their AirBNB guests who are the main source of revenue.

If you are looking to get away from the noise and chaos of the city, this is a perfect place to go. The only noises you will here are from the animals, the workers on the farm or casual conversation. Everyone was very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable.

Our stay at the farm house was wonderful! We were traveling during an off season holiday so we didn't get the full experience of the community, however our hosts were more than accommodating! The house is so unique and special, as is their work at the community. The food served was fresh and delicious I hope to return for a workshop in the future!
