Located north of Rome, Villa Marielle is on a one-acre grassy knoll at the edge of a small village near Orvieto the jewel of Umbria. Come sip your coffee under the arbor, make pizza in the outdoor oven or just have a glass of wine poolside.
16th Century Restored Tuscan Farmhouse
Conveniently located between Rome and Florence, Villa Marielle is a home situated on a secluded on-acre property at the edge of a small village near Orvieto. The structures are made from the native stone, tufa, the surrounding grounds have many different fruit trees and flowering shrubs and the private swimming pool and outdoor terraces offer tranquil views of the Umbrian hills. You can walk into town in 10 minutes, have your coffee or (email hidden)-tabac, and get all your provisions from the general store (Bruno, the owner is charming and helpful and can tell you what's going on in town).
It’s the perfect getaway, yet many of Italy’s most beautiful medieval hill towns are an easy drive: Siena, Todi, Assisi, Arezzo, Spoleto, are all within an hour’s drive. The sulphur hot springs town of Saturnia is 45 minutes away and the pristine Mediterranean beaches just over an hour. The cleanest lake in Europe (and , I think one of the most beautiful) Lake Bolsena, is 15 minutes to the west -- close enough to go just for dinner or a bike ride. And Orvieto where the final Etruscans were held under siege (check out the underground tunnel tour!) is a 15 minute car trip.
The house sleeps 6-8 with three bedrooms upstairs and three full bathrooms including a jacuzzi tub. (Note that the price is for six people and there is a linen charge for more than six.) A spacious living area, dining area, breakfast room and kitchen make up the downstairs. There are several outdoor eating areas adjacent to the pool. There’s even a traditional outdoor pizza oven!
The home is a completely independent property surrounded by countryside, rolling hills and small farms. It is in the village of Torre San Severo. Guests have the entire home and pool to themselves and it is very private.
Interaction with Guests
The family looking after the property are available for extra services, including aesthetician services and massage on-premise, meals on request, babysitting on request and driving. These an be arranged on premise directly with the family. The services are paid directly to the family.
Torre San Severo is known in the region for its hospitality, and welcoming community. Here, they celebrate everything. So come, participate, enjoy.
You will need a car.
Other Things to Note
The house is on two levels with a stone staircase. Not suitable for the very elderly if climbing a staircase isn't feasible.
No smoking indoors.
Beautiful house and village. The housekeepers were incredibly nice and helpful. We enjoyed it a lot.
We had a lovely week in this beautiful Umbrian villa. The owner Veronica, and the caretakers were very friendly and helpful. The house itself immediately makes you feel 'at home' and not a holiday rental house due to a lovely, well-equipped kitchen, an interesting (mainly English) library with lots of books/guides about the area and nicely-furnitured chambers. The garden is a superb playground for kids where they can play soccer, beach-ball, hide and seek etc.
Orvieto and (the Lago di) Bolsena are nearby places that are really worth at least one, but preferably several visits, also with young children.
If to mention one minor detail, it was the outdoor furniture. There was no proper dining-facility outdoors.
