  • Great place to stay. recommendation were great and Helena was very helpful. If you don't have a car-it is pretty far away from any town. Such a beautiful place to stay at.

  • Imagine the most perfect combination of indoor and outdoor living in a tropical garden. The bedroom - indoors, had windows onto the private garden that surrounded the bed at pillow height. The bathroom - indoors, was a luxurious design of creative excellence. The kitchen and living space were the true pinnacle of the experience, being outdoors, spacious and comfortable under a roof. Helena has space for yoga, and has the finest hung hammocks.

Helena met us upon our arrival and took the time to point out all the relevant amenities. The next day she helped us plan our excursions to Rio Celeste and Cerro Chato. She also provided a binder with information about many of the parks and destinations that guests might be interested in visiting.

We spent 3 nights in the small garden cabin, with large windows on 2 sides that put you right in the midst of a lush garden. The cabin is paired with a well-equipped outdoor kitchen, complete with large fridge, 2-burner propane stove, coffee maker (with complimentary coffee), and toaster oven. If you enjoy outdoor living, this kitchen space will likely appeal to you. A patio with very comfortable hammocks and a pair of sofas provide a pleasant setting for relaxing after a day exploring the Arenal area. Beside the patio is a modern tiled terra-cotta bathroom with (truly) hot shower.

Situated at the north end of Arenal Lake, in a small, well-maintained community, the Casa is easy to reach and find using Helena's directions. You can use this location as a base for trips to Arenal Volcano NP, Rio Celeste (Tenorio Volcano NP), or even Monteverde, but be aware that driving tends to take longer than you might expect, due to rough and tortuous roads.

This was one of the most beautiful and comfortable places we stayed while in Costa Rica, thanks to Helena's carefully designed spaces and aesthetic eye.

Helena responded to quickly to all our emails, before, during and after our stay at her Casita.

  • The host was accurate, responsive and courteous. The neighborhood was mellow, clean, green, and a little remote. Howler monkeys and chickens were in the near surroundings for natural wake up calls. There is helpful information both on Helena's site and in paper form on the property. Cleanliness and recycling etiquette is important, although I found myself wondering how to dispose of some problematic items. A car seemed to be important to our goals for this area.

  • Elena is such a sweetheart!
the house is great and it has everything u need! Super clean and great comfy bed!
Although a little far from everything, (if u dont have a car), the views are spectacular. Theres a little corner store with a little bit of everything and 2 restaurants down the hill!! If ur a kite-surfing or wind-surfing avid, this is the spot for you with Tico wind surf just down the hill!! Overall i would recommend this lovely place to anyone. Loved my stay at Casa de Elena! :)

  • We had a great stay at Casa de Helena! They bed was comfortable. The room and bathroom was exceptional clean. The kitchen was well stocked (and included oils/seasonings) and the patio area was great to unwind in. The place is in a really nice location near to the lake and surrounded by nature (be prepared for the howler monkeys wake up call). Helena was wonderful, she was very accommodating and responsive to queries (and had a great folder of things to do in the surrounding area).

  • Helena is fantastic and her place is superb! Staying at Casa de Helena made our vacation to Costa Rica so perfect. She has created a wonderful space for travelers to relax, cook a simple meal, and just enjoy sitting in the cool evening and listen to the birds and critters make music. She is an artist and healer and her place definitely reflects that. She even let my boyfriend paint a mural on her bench during our stay. She took us to see a beautiful sunset and recommended a fun day hike that we loved. I can't wait to return.

  • Casa de Helena is set in wonderful surroundings, with the jungle literally in the back garden! The rooms are a good size, simplistic and elegantly decorated. There is a lovely shower room and the kitchen was clean with all the necessary equipment, charmingly set half inside/half outside. There is a good-sized seating area on the patio and Helena provides an invaluable folder full of information about what there is to do in the area.

It is necessary to have a car in order to experience the area to the fullest. However, the rooms are really great value, the ambience is great and the local people are friendly and usually make an effort to chat! Helena herself is charming, friendly and hospitable. She made me feel very welcome and was very helpful when I needed assistance. Thanks so much, Helena!

  • I have no idea how a stay could be better than my stay in Casa de Helena. Well, that's not completely true. If I had bought a lottery ticket and won the lottery while staying there, then it would have been better! But, alas, I did not.

What I did get was thorough and timely e-mail communication, prior to arrival and while in residence, and a lovely home in the countryside at the west end of Lake Arenal. I was 5 minutes off the main highway, straight up the paved road. Regardless of which unit that you stay in, there is a large hedge along the front of the property which gives you great privacy. The back yard bumps up against the jungle foliage, so nature's delights are right before your eyes and ears: toucans, howler monkeys, butterflies, motmots, etc. We spent hours on the back patio watching, listening, eating, dozing off, and enjoying Sabolito life in the slow lane.

If you like rush hour traffic, special gringo pricing, people all in a hurry, McDonald's and a Wal-mart nearby, then Casa de Helena is not for you. We found it to be peaceful and sustenance for the soul.

We had a Tica dinner in the home of a neighbor, Juana, which was delightful. Her grand-daughter was there for English support, which we didn't need, but some people might. Although we like to practice our Spanish, I figured out that it pleased her to use her English, which we did. We met the whole clan of 3 generations after our meal, escorted back to Casa de Helena by flashlight. It was cute, like stepping back in time to the Costa Rican version of dinner with Aunt Bee and Andy Griffeth from Mayberry.

It was with some regret we had to leave home in Sabolito, but the plethora of beautiful places in Costa Rica called us on.

    Thanks Helena!

  • CasaHelena is a very relaxing--and healing--environment. In December and January the winds blow in gales but you're wrapped in a green jungle environment so it's invigorating. The guest rooms and outdoor cooking space are beautifully designed and decorated in a rustic elegance--reminded me of my family's home in Marches, Italy. I came without transportation and when I found the cafes were a longer hike than I wanted to make (most European guests wouldn't mind), Helena arranged for a neighbor to prepare suppers for me. That was a very pleasant Spanish immersion experience--and the cooking was outstanding! Helena is a natural health practitioner, and, aside from providing lovely accomodations, she prescribed and provided a homeopathic treatment that cured a dental ailment that dentists had no clue how to heal. From the many areas of Costa Rica I've visited the Lake Arenal area is my favorite--I'll be back!

  • This is a GREAT place. It is off the beaten path yet close enough to get to the popular destinations around Arenal. There is some excellent hiking/walking just out the front door. I went by bus from San Jose to Tilaran and then by taxi to Casa de Helena. Two things to note if you do the same 1) when the taxi driver asks if you want to stop for groceries say "Yes". There is a little little store in Sabalito but everything else is a bus or taxi ride away. You'll want things for breakfast/cocktails or whatever you want to eat in. 2) the restaurants are a 20-30 minute walk. Helena can fill you in but her recommendations were spot-on. The walk isn't a bad thing. I ate out all four nights and was able to use the walk back to justify having dessert. If the view is clear go early to Mystica - pricy but the best view of the volcano. Best local food is Equis. Plaza del Cafe was good too (and the best ice cream).
