About this listing
You will feel yourself being warmly embraced by this historic home & its owners, who enjoy mtg travelers at their popular Evanston area B&B. From this location, close walk to shops/restaurants/trains. You will come as a stranger...leave as a friend!
Our home serves as a temporary residence for many different musicians, artists, academics, & business people. We aim to have everybody arrive in our home a visitor, but leave as a friend.
In fact, what makes our house unique is that we have now served as hosts to people from all over the world and sometime at the same time. We started doing this when I took a job as the Midwest Coordinator for an International High School Student Exchange Program and got to know how easy it was meeting people from around the world. Since then, and hosting many Northwestern Graduate Students working on their PhD or Masters in our home, our friends have taken to calling our house the Gertrude Stein Home of Evanston, which I take as a compliment. They explain this by saying, each time they meet someone at our home, they know they are going to learn something new. They also have said that they have been impressed to see that not only are these people living in our home, but they can see that they have become our friends. And, they love the comrade they feel which eminates from our home. If only we could bottle that and sell it to the world, eh?
Evanston is home to Northwestern University and boasts tree-lined lakefront paths for biking/jogging, a vibrant shopping district, dozens of ethnically diverse restaurants, live music venues, movie theaters and more. Northwestern, and the lakefront, are less than 10 minutes from our home.
Being located, just 1 block from the train, we are extremely well-located for university students, not only of Northwestern U., but also Loyola Univ., Northeastern Univ. & DePaul Univ.
Evanston is home to Northwestern University, which was voted #4 in a recent poll concerning the most walkable campuses. The only university towns voted more walkable were:
1. Cambridge, MA Walk Score 87 (Harvard University and MIT)
2. Berkeley, CA Walk Score 79 (University of California at Berkeley)
3. Providence, RI Walk Score 76 (Brown University)
4. Evanston, IL Walk Score 74 (Northwestern University
Our home, built in 1888, is located in the Evanston Lakefront Historic District. Although our home is vintage, it has all of the modern amenities a person needs for our 21st century lifestyles. We have central air and heat, cable TV and wireless internet everywhere in the house and yard.
It is one block away from a Whole Foods, and has a Trader Joe's as well as a Starbucks Coffee & Sushi Bar, just behind our house. Our home is located just 3 blocks west of Lake Michigan and a block east of the train to downtown Chicago, which is approximately 25 minutes away. If you have kids, we also have a play lot across the street and several along the lakefront.
We also have 2 little white/black toy fox terrier dogs that our guests enjoy very much. They have always been great at making friends w/ people. Recently, we had two young men with us. A young German man from Wiesbaden who had never had a dog before. 6 months later, he was so in love with these pupettes, that I think, if he would have tried to take one more picture on his phone, it might have exploded! haaaa. Then there was Yuong (Tony) Liu, from China. He also had never had a dog and at first was very frightened of dogs. He would walk towards them and if they started to approach him, he would turn on his heels and walk very fast the other way. Well after some coaching, Tony, too fell in love w/ these two little harmless pupettes. The worse these two can do is shed some of that white fur on you, which I'm always trying to control, but....
Because I am a writer, I work out of our home, and will always be available to answer any questions you may have that come up. Questions, such as how to use something in the house or about our local area. We do serve morning coffee and in each bedroom, there is a refrigerator, so you can shop and make your meals at will in our kitchen. We do have a large, bright kitchen that people like to hang in. Everyone is free to use all our kitchen appliances as long as they clean up after themselves. I will be happy to show you where things are stored. Also, in each bedroom there is a desk for your laptop where you can do you work if necessary. Guest are free to work just about anywhere they wish in the house (the glory of Wi-Fi) whether in the first floor since the living room is a pleasant room to work in with lots of light, or the kitchen, family room, screened in back porch or the outside patio.
Also, we have a free laundry facility on the second floor for small loads of laundry or you can use the basement laundry facility for your larger loads of laundry.
Our neighborhood is great for walking along the lake, looking at the historical older homes in the neighborhood, or riding a bike along the lake, which can be rented at a nearby bike shop.
We are located just south of the NU campus and east of the train to go to downtown Chicago. Once you are at our home, you really won't have the need to use a car because most things are just a short few blocks walk away, only some of which will require a car. And, there is free car parking on the streets near our home.

RE: PUBLIC TRANSIT
We are located just south of the NU campus and east of the El. You can also take the Davis or Main Street METRA line to the Loop. Either system will get you downtown quickly and easily. Though you’re unlikely to need a car if you’re staying locally or traveling around town, an off-street parking spot is also available. Zipcars are located only two blocks away.
FROM O'HARE AIRPORT
You can take the PACE 250 bus from the Kiss and Fly lot to Davis Street in downtown Evanston for $1.75. Cab fare from the airport is straight metered and runs approximately $38 to Evanston.
FROM MIDWAY AIRPORT
Take the Orange line to downtown Chicago. The station is in the airport. Transfer at Roosevelt Road during non-rush hour and take the Red line to Howard St, where you'll transfer to the Purple Line to Dempster Street in Evanston. If you are arriving during rush hours (5:20–9:30am or 3-7:30p), you can stay on the Orange line to Washington and Wells and transfer there for an express Purple line to Dempster. Again, economic, but it will take some time. FYI... A cab along Lake Shore Drive through Chicago to Evanston will run approximately $55.

Sue & Tim :
" We have loved becoming a part of AirBnB because it brings the world to our door. We love that one week we can be talking with a French family of 4, the next week we're hosting a young professional man from Germany than a husband and wife from some other part of the world. It is truly a magnificent thing that feels safe for everyone, the travelers and the hosts!"
It has been our experience that people who enjoy using AirBnB are quite intellectually curious and a worldly sort of person, who enjoy being in someone's home much more than in some impersonal hotel room. Also, they enjoy saving the money that a stay in an AirBnB room has to offer. WE ARE BIG FANS of AIRBNB!
