About this listing
Just a converted studio to a small sleeper room for a budget traveler who's looking for a quiet place, in an authentic residential neighborhood.
Another specialty is the busy market that lives and breathes nearby. If you like to cook, it's easy to do within minutes of browsing... everything you need (not only limited to food) can be found just a few dozen meters away!
Another unique thing about this house are is the amount of light and air that can be easily accessed. On the main floor are two small balconies, off the kitchen, while upstairs you can use the ENORMOUS balcony which wraps around almost 360* (and half of which is private), giving a nearly full panorama of the city.
Share the house with one laid-back American English teacher.
Short-term rentals are welcome! Longer stays are also fine, after a brief interim period. ( I usually get along with just about anyone who is thoughtful enough to use this sort of website :)
Great location, moments from d.1 and other hotspots, like the Le Thanh Ton area, lots of great restaurants and bars, responsive landlord, market around the corner, and more!
Me and my daughter stayed a whole month with Rusty in District Binh Thanh.
Rusty is a lovely host, very friendly and easygoing. He took us out for dinner the first night and made us feel at home.
We stayed in a room on the first floor, adjacent to the kitchen en living room. As both Rusty and us weren't home much, our lives were easily blended around the kitchen and living room and we felt we could come and go as we pleased.
Because the house is located in an ally just of a busy food market, it's a perfect place to experience the real Saigon. You can hear and see Vietnamese go about on their business all around you.
We had a good time at Rusty's and since it was cheap living, we used it as a basecamp for trips to the Mekong Delta, Cat Tien National Park and other highlights.
Thank you so much, Rusty!!
It was a fuss-free experience for me! Rusty wasn't around when I moved in so his property manager, An, helped me with that. She was really friendly and helpful, and gave me tips on how to navigate the city after that.
The air-con in the room was cold enough. There's awesome Bun Bo Hue (beef noodles) and Banh Mi (roasted meat sandwiches) nearby in the market. In the morning at about 7am or so you'd start to hear sounds of school, bustling market and working construction site just next to the house. It was a refreshing experience for me but if you are a light-sleeper who hates getting awaken by noise then this isn't the place for you. The only downside was mosquitoes. (I probably could have obtained some mosquito repellents but I decided to just tolerate it)
Rusty's a generally easygoing person so I felt comfortable staying at his place!
The room is a quite good choice for economy traveller like me :) Private shower, comfortable mattress, wi-fi and some other stuff are my favourite features of Rusty's room. Notre Dame Cathedral is not far away from. I went there on my own few times :) If you are not a walker hail a taxi then. "Vinasun Taxi" (bear in mind - only labeled cars are genuine "Vinasun"!) is a reliable company, MasterCard is accepted. "Pizza Hut" (it's a series of restaurants) is definitely a place to drop in.
Rusty was a great host! I cannot say enough about the neighborhood. I felt very safe and secure. The room I booked had only a mattress, so not for all. The other room had a queen bed. Taxi to post office ran about $3 if driver new the directions. Be sure to give drivers clear idea of finding the street. Private shower and tv were very nice, as well. Walkable to district 1 at about 30 mins. Well worth it. Television, fridge, also. Rusty was great.
The picture is accurate, simple but clean and with an ensuite shower and loo. I loved the area as I have lived in Vietnam before and adored being right in the centre of real Vietnam, but its not for the new or faint hearted, Rusty was away on holiday , but one of his guests was there to meet me, and was a fabulous hostess.
The mattress was very comfortable, there was a fan and AC machine and I simply loved the ambience and especially the massage and hair washing of the nearby hairdresser - head massage and great blow dry for 40,000 vnd! And eat pho on the street , its excellent!
I had a wonderful time staying at Rusty's. He's a gracious host who went the extra mile to welcome me to HCMC. And I definitely recommend staying with him! :)

About the Host, Rusty
I'm American, have been living and working in Vietnam for 6 years, and I simply love Saigon! It has just the right mix of unpredictability, fast-pace, great weather and food, and good vibes for me.
The rest of Vietnam is also amazing-- it has everything to fit any style-- from lazy deserted beaches to romantic mountain valley towns, huge caves and jungles, national parks, and river cruises (and more!)
Before Vietnam I lived in Prague for several years, with origins in Portland and Virginia back in the States. I love travel, film, sports, and current events / sociology.
