And we are located just a 10 minute drive to Tico Wind Kite and Surf center which is open from 1 December until 1 May each year. The other launch site is 15 minutes away and open all year 24/7.
The roads to reach here are all paved and the route is easy to find. The area is clean, safe and breathtakingly beautiful.
Water is clean and pure, completely drinkable and usable from the tap.
US. dollars can be used in Costa Rica. And there are local bank machines which give either dollars or Colonies. Exchange rate is better at the banks than at the airport.

There is a full kitchen, breakfast nook with comfortable rocking chairs for watching birds and other wild life in the jungle below the house. There is Private bathroom and also out door shower in the back patio area of the house.

I recommend that you shop for groceries on the way to the house. There is a small grocery store in the village.
The nearest airport is Liberia International LIR But you may also fly in to San Jose International airport.
.I recommend renting a car because there is so much to see and do in this area of Costa Rica. I also have two really great professional drivers who pick up my guests from either airport.. They even wait while you go shopping for groceries on the way up to the Lake. They can take you on private tours which is great for small groups. You have only to relax and really enjoy the enchanting beauty and majesty of the live volcano, hot springs, jungle and waterfall hikes on well groomed easy trails.
The drives around the lake are absolutely beautiful. And even walking down the street in my village there are a breathtaking views of the volcano and lake.
Local activities include, beautiful hikes just out the front door, hanging bridges tour, an easy hike over huge bridges suspended over the rainforest canopy, zip line tours, kayaking, horseback riding, and lessons, windsurfing and kiting and lessons, hot springs.. There is also one of the best gift shops in the province just 20 minutes away.
We welcome you to join us in Beautiful Costa Rica
Guests will have access to the main house gardens and covered porches.
Interaction with Guests
I tend to leave my guests their privacy after I introduce them to the property, explain about recycling and how the house is set up to be eco friendly.
I also assist guests in planning their adventures with my custom adventure book.
And if desired I help guests arrange guides, tours and transportation.
And I am always just a text or phone call away to help if they need me personally or the help of the maid for more towels or other items.
What I love about my neighborhood is that People are warm and friendly and often riding horses down the street. The air is fresh and clean, the green hills ,volcano and lake are so beautiful.
And my back yard is a natural reserve full of Monkeys, Toucans, Mot Mots, armadillo's just amazing biodiversity. People tell me they see more birds and animals from my back porch than on their hikes in to the jungle!
I highly recommend a car for this area!
It is a big area with alot to see and in 4 different directions.
And there are also regular buses around the lake including one bus at 6 am and 12 noon right in front of my house.
There is also a village taxi service for a few dollars you can get a ride to one of our nearby restaurants at night. ( It's beautiful to walk during the day about 15 to 20 minute walk to three good restaurants.
Relax and enjoy your stay.
Smoking is permitted on out door patio areas where comfortable seating is provided.
There are some things to know about how an eco friendly house works but they are not really rules. I explain when you arrive how to keep recycling separate and where to put compost. How to turn on the Eco friendly shower, nothing complicated or unusual. Actually very European style.
The house was great!Five stars!Super clean and comfortable mattress.Hot showers were a treat in the mountains.Loved relaxing on the back porch with a rum drink watching monkeys and toucans.Windsurfing on lake arenal was awesome.I was happy to see that there were three good restaurants a short drive from the house.Great hike from the house with amazing views of the lake . On your right is one volcano and to the left are three more.I'll be back in October for more of the same and maybe a little bit more.
Check it out for sure.
If glamping is your thing then Casa de Helena is the perfect place for you. I just wouldn't suggest staying a whole week. The property is quaint and cozy (not classy and NOT modern). After 3 nights of trying to give the property a chance we decided it wasn't what what we were comfortable staying in for the entire week that we booked.
There were a lot of hidden rules we had to follow with the property that we found out about after we had broken them due to just not knowing. We decided to check out after 3 nights and head to a resort on the pacific coast. My friend felt bugs in her bed and said she felt she was getting bitten in the night under her sheets. She was in the sun room that gets sun at the crack of dawn so she could never sleep in. I was in the dark backroom that has a door to the back patio and this room had a moldy smell to it. The air in the room was really damp. I found some bugs in my bed too and wasn't sure if the sheets and comforter had been recently cleaned or not. I brought the bugs up to Helena when we decided to check out and she blamed us for bringing the bugs in after going hiking but I know that we didn't bring them in. There were also little black bugs that appeared in the indoor blue shower so I just decided to wear beach sandals in there when they appeared. In the kitchen there were little ants on the counter when we arrived that stayed the whole 3 days. We expected for the towels to be changed every couple of days by the maid that lived across the street but that didn't happen.
Overall Helena was a really sweet lady and the house has amazing bones and the idea of the guest house is great but it just didn't deliver for us. The property feels extremely secluded and is not within walking distance to any places to eat so if you are without a car you have to buy food at a grocery store for sure or wait on a taxi to take you somewhere. In hindsight, I wonder if having our own transportation would have been better but I didn't trust the roads and after seeing them and being on them I'm kind of glad we didn't drive ourselves. We decided to use her driver/tour guide Tomas who picked us up from the airport and while he was a pleasant, patient and most importantly bilingual he had a really small old car that he was driving us around in that didn't have two working seatbelts in the back. There also weren't that many activities that were close to Casa De Helena and everything appeared to be really spread out when we depended on Tomas to be our tour guide and take us around.
Only Negative Review I have ever had!
First this is the edge of Ancient Rainforest
In Central America not New York City
Many guests do walk to restaurants and the windsurf site from here all the time.
Two very Large City Girls arrived a very rainy week ! With no car (it is rainy season.) they wanted to leave because of weather so found every possible thing to complain about
These were not the Usual Eco Adventure type guests that come here.
Regarding bugs, :the girls went hiking in the jungle and horseback riding. Everyone gets bites or bugs on those adventures. You feel them at night. Best to wear bug spray. I assumed they would know that.
Towels we left 6 towels , they had only to request more. The maid is just across the street.
We wash and dry everything fanatically
We clean weekly even when the house is empty.
Regarding Rules yes we recycle thats all.
The other guests there at the same time said everything was perfect. I guess Costa Rica is too Eco Adventure for some people.
These guests left to pay 400 USD a night at a fancy hotel at the beach. My place is 95.
Thomas ONE of our dryivers is loved by everyone and has the best price for tour guide and ride. They could havd chosen our other driver and paid 3 times more for the big fancy tour van. Their choice.
These guests were not de the usual Eco Adventure Type that come for the Beauty, Wildness, Nature , and Simplicity of Costa Rica.
Awesome place, quiet and peaceful.
Everything was on point. The Casa Helena is at around one hour from La Fortuna and one hour and half from Rio Celeste by driving.
Thank you again Helena for your hospitality.
We had a great 3 days at Helena's house. Monkeys were in the backyard to greet us when we arrived and toucans were there to see us leave. The house is cosy and has everything needed for self catering. Helena was very helpful and friendly.
The area is a little far from most amenities. There are a couple of restaurants within 5min, we really enjoyed the Lake Arenal Brewery! Great beer and great people. Otherwise, the closest grocery store, restaurants, and gas station are in Nuevo Arenal or Tilaran, either one about 20min drive. The house is about 1hr20min to Arenal National park, La Fortuna is another 15min past that. We did the drive twice in three days, that was a lot of driving. The other day we did the Viento Fresca Waterfalls and Las Puma Wildlife Refuge, both were excellent!
Helena was a great host. She welcomed us the evening we arrived to make sure we had everything we needed to be comfortable. She made herself available by phone or e-mail any time. She has a guest book with information for all the local sites with directions. We enjoyed them all. Her guest house was very comfortable and is great place for a getaway. The back porch is especially nice in the mornings when the howler monkeys and toucans are active. We spent most of our free time there enjoying the cool breezes and the wildlife. I would recommend this to my family and friends.
Helena was excellent and took great lengths to make sure our safety was first. Lovely little house that we are still talking about! If only we didn't have to leave so quickly.
Helena was a wonderful host and gave great tips for things to do in the area!
