Our 2 bedroom, 1 bath townhouse features a queen bed in one room and a full bed in the other. It has a full kitchen with modern appliances including dishwasher. Wifi + basic cable tv & a dvd player. There is a washer & dryer in the basement and you're free to use it at your leisure. We're out of town for an extended period but the house is fully stocked with towels and linens, dishes, etc.
It's two blocks to the Broad St. Subway with easy access to Center City or the stadium complex. It's less than a block to the #2 bus for a quick ride to Walnut St. shopping and Rittenhouse Square.
It's a 4 block walk to the shops and restaurants of East Passyunk Ave. and one block further to the grocery store and pharmacy.
Newbold is a diverse neighborhood with a few hidden gem eateries from Indonesian to Thai to Mexican to American pub fare. By appearances it's a little rough around the edges but we love it here and it's a really friendly and inviting neighborhood.
This is a two bedroom rowhome - you have access to the entire house.
I'm living overseas so we won't get to meet. Depending on daylight savings time it's usually the middle of the night here between 10am and 4pm Philly time. If you have an emergency between these hours you can call my father-in-law (Jim) at (phone number hidden)
The Newbold neighborhood has a few great cafes and eateries, is walking distance to a lot of bars and restaurants on East Passyunk Ave. and a very quick (10 minutes) subway ride into Center City.
The Broad St. Subway (orange line) runs every 10 minutes from 5am until just after midnight. Between midnight and 5am a bus runs the same route every 15 minutes. The #2 bus runs north on 16th St. and south on 17th St. and will take you up to the Walnut St./Rittenhouse area as well as to the Parkway. The #37 bus runs from Broad & Passyunk (in front of the Walgreens) to the airport. That trip costs $2.25 and takes 25 minutes.
Keys are in a lockbox on the railing. Message me a few days prior for your combination. A few guests left reviews where they mentioned having trouble getting keys - this was entirely the result of the awful cold/ice/snow we had where the lockbox was freezing shut. That extreme weather is in the past and so are problems with the lockbox.
This place is great. We really didn't need the space of the entire apartment, but the price was so good we couldn't resist. Check in was super easy - just make sure you contact Jim in advance for instructions on arrival. Everything was clean and organized other than a few scuff marks on the walls. Clean, comfy beds, with tons of extra blankets and pillows. It's located a bit outside center city but we actually really liked the location and were able to walk to center city no problem - though there was a bus and subway close by.
I really liked the neighborhood. There were tons of restaurants and bars in very close walking distance, with great vegetarian options. We were also able to walk to South Street and see things like the Magic Gardens. The house was spacious and exactly as advertised. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom was clean, and everything worked and was easy (i.e. internet, appliances, etc). Jim was really responsive with everything and provided me with detailed descriptions of transportation options from the airport ahead of time. I would definitely stay here again next time I'm in Philadelphia and I would recommend this place to friends. Thanks again Jim!
Jim was very responsive and accommodating. I requested a late check-out, and received it with no fuss. The house was clean, beds were comfy, street parking was available, and we had no issues with any utilities. Floorplan was perfect for our group of four to dine-in/hang-out before heading out for the evening. I will say the neighborhood was a little dicey in areas (boarded up buildings, etc.), but no one messed with us, our car, etc. An overall great time! Thanks!
Lots of space in Jim's place. Overall, it was a great experience. We walked to everything from his place. The only negative would be that we agreed on an 11:00 AM check-in. I arrived at 11:25 and the key was not there. Fortunately, someone dropped the key off around 11:35 before we had left to waste time somewhere else. It's hard to communicate with Jim as he is across the globe but the communication leading up to the stay was great.
Free parking was also a big plus.
My family and I enjoyed our stay at Jim's place. It was clean and all was as pictured. Communication with Jim was so easy even though he was out of the country and always got back to us promptly. I did wish there was a conventional microwave in the kitchen and a bathroom sink that worked better but other than that, it was a great stay in a comfortable area near the train station and various shops. Would definitely stay here again!
Me and my partner booked 1 night last weekend for Jim's place in Philly.
I'll start with saying the apartment itself is fine. The place is pretty basic, the bathroom sink tap & toilet are a little wobbly and it took us a while to get the hang of the shower but the place was fairly clean & we were grateful that the heating was on when we arrived and worked great.
The reason why I would not recommend this was because we were left stranded outside for 4 hours because our host forgot to send us the details of how to get in to the apartment. Upon making the reservation I received an e-mail confirming our stay and telling me we'd be sent the check-in details later that week. Unfortunately they never came. On the day of check in I called Jim and left a message on his answering machine, asking for the details, he had an automated message saying he was in Australia. I then texted him and sent him a message through airbnb, 2 hours later still nothing.
We had been told we could check in at 2. Around 4pm we went to the apt. to see if there was anyone there to let us in or a note with instructions but no luck.
We were staying in Philly for just one night as my boyfriend was playing a gig there and we had his entire drum kit with us. Luckily we had rented a car for our journey so we were able to leave the drums in there instead of lugging them around with us all day, but our original plan was to get the train and it would have totally ruined our trip if we'd been stranded outside with the drum set.
In the end at 6pm I got a text telling us how to get in to the apt and the next day Jim messaged me explaining that he was in Australia and because of the time difference he hadn't seen the messages till several hours later as he received them in the middle of the night.
So in summary my advice would be that if you choose to stay here make sure you get the check-in details in advance.
Jim's rowhome was clean, easy to find, and located within two minutes of a metro stop. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Philly!
A great space in Philly. Jim's place was incredibly nice and spacious. I would recommend his place to anyone visiting the area. It was a 5 minute walk to the subway, which made getting around fairly easy. Thanks for allowing me to stay at your place!
Great location. Everything is as described. Communication with the host is smooth. Great experience.
Out stay at Jim's was great. His place was super clean and conveniently located near shops and bars. Kitchen was up to date and fully functional. Beds were clean and comfortable. Jim was very responsive with any questions I had. Would defiantly stay here again.
