REFUGIO NACIONAL DE VIDA SILVESTRE ROMELIA
The Romelia RMVS, located in Montezuma on the Nicoya Peninsula, was created on November 24th, 1998 with the objective of contributing to the conservation of the Tempisque Conservation Area (ACT, from its acronym in Spanish).
The refuge stemmed from an initiative of Albert Ingalls and Gitza Gatti, who followed a dream of conservation for land that was their home and the birthright of their children. The land, now the Romelia Mixed Wildlife Refuge (RMVS-Romelia), contributes to the ACT as part of the peninsular biological corridor (Cabo Blanco Absolute Reserve, Curu Mixed Wildlife Reserve, Karen Morgensen Reserve, Nicholas Wessberg Reserve and the Romelia Mixed Wildlife Refuge). It is adjacent to the Nicholas Wessberg Absolute Reserve, one of the first and most valuable protected wild areas in the country.
The land of the RMSV exudes beauty. It is beachfront, bathed by rollinf Pacific Ocean waves, guarded by iconic sea stacks and inlands nurtured by peaceful rivers and tranquil waterfalls. It is one of the peninsula’s last bastions of pristine wilderness. The RMVS is visited by tens of thousands of eco tourists annually.
This Refuge is approximately 224 Ha 8349 m2 (SINAC, 2011). Within this territory there are a number of distinct ecosystems, primary forest, secondary forest, riparian forest and gallery forest. The avifauna includes more than 57 species of birds, 26 species of herpetofauna including, 13 reptiles and 7 amphibians. There are also 26 species of mammals, including 11 types of bats.
The weather is characterized as humid, hot and very hot. Annual precipitation is about 3,000 mm, distributed from May to December. Precipitation presents deficit between July and August during the period known as “Veranillo de San Juan”, which lasts up to 70 days. Average annual temperature is between 24 and 27 C (75,2 to 80,6 F) with an annual potential evapotranspiration of over 1710 mm. The aridity index is over 20% and the hydric is between 40 and 60% (Herrera 1985 quoted in RMVS-Romelia—SINAC-MIAET, 2011).

Our mission is to rally support for long-term, sustainable strategies aimed at the restoration and preservation of precious wildlife and land. Utilizing prime ocean front that has been generously donated to our program for stewardship, we have a singular opportunity to offer the environment a new beginning, sea turtles a fighting chance and our visitors a window into the natural world for generations to come.
Please try to be aware of using environmental friendly practices: MAKE SURE TO TURN LIGHTS OFF, SAVE WATER (we have outages in summer)
No more than 5 people allowed in the house.
Be respectful of your neighbor parking space and keep it quiet after 11 p.m.
Great location, easy to get to Montezuma, fantastic beach right out front. Comfortable house.
Friendly Soda next door and also the staff all very helpful.
Could have done with a proper washing line to hang clothes.
We had a good time and we enjoyed every single day at Casa Palmeras. The kids love having the monkeys coming to say hello nearly every day.
The house is beautiful and conveniently located right across the street from our favorite beach in Montezuma. 10-15 min walk into the center of town, just close enough to be easily reached on foot.
The only problem we had was with the lack of AC during the day. At night it was no problem, but our stay was during the hottest season, and the house traps heat. NTt was very attentive and easy to get in touch with and helped us move next door into the deluxe version of the home, which is AMAZING. While I probably wouldn't stay here again, I would most definitely spend the extra money to rent the Deluxe Casa Palmeras again. My only regret is that we aren't here for longer!
Nice apartment just a few minutes from the center. Beautiful views and a quiet place to relax.
NTT was a great host. Responsive and helped when we got locked out. Even checked up to make ire everything was ok. The house itself is in an amazing location! Beach, waterfall, and town super close by. The cons are there is construction going on starting very early in the morning (not sure when that is done), also we had a lot of Mosquitos in the house because some of the window screens were broke.
I would probably not return here, but it would be a great option for a small group on a budget.
I absolutely loved this little house! It was close to the beach as well as the waterfalls and there was also a nice little soda (costa rican restaurant) nearby that had amazing food! We got the best of both world's with the location. It was about a 10-15 walk from downtown Montezuma which was close enough to allow us to buy groceries downtown and walk back to the house with them with no problem but far enough from the center to allow us to feel like we had our own private paradise. The beds were also surprisingly VERY comfortable. I also enjoyed hearing the waves at night and in the morning-very peaceful! In addition, the host Nefertiti, made sure we had transportation from the bus stop to the house which was very helpful considering we were 4 females traveling and didn't get to Montezuma until 11:15 p.m. on a Friday night. I didn't even see a taxi at that time, so I am very thankful for her generousity regarding transportation. My only issue was the wii fii so make sure that is working properly for future reference. I didn't have time to do everything I wanted to do so I plan on coming back to Montezuma in the next few weeks and renting the same home again. Really special place!
We had excellent communication with the host and meet with her local contact Fabio to show us where the house was. This was great as we were new to the country. The house has a large deck outside where we ate our meals and enjoyed the sounds of the ocean. The two rooms are large and beds comfortable. Great shower and bathroom. Kitchen was also large and had most items required to cook up a feast.
The spot is just 10 mins walk to town and right next to a rock beach and if you walk up the road away from town there is another lovely sand beach.
Great place with an awesome local eatery next door!
We had a really mellow time at Casa Palmeras. The house is simple and clean and the veranda is large and perfect for hanging-out. The kitchen is well equipped and it is in a great spot just outside of the village. We loved the small beach opposite - which we had to ourselves . There are also some large rockpools just to the left, one of which you can swim in and other smaller ones are like hot-tubs - very cool!
