First of all this is not an apartment, it is a room in my house. There is a king size bed which everyone thinks is very comfortable. A 300 year old wardrobe and drawers. There is a private bathroom with a bath and shower, recently refurbished.

The Space

I have a semi-detached Edwardian house in Haltwhistle Northumberland, 2 miles from Hadrian's Wall. I have 2 listings. This one is on the first floor, the other listing can be seen as Halwhistle Roman Northumberland and is a loft room. "Haltwhistle Roman Northumberland" can take 4 people, although 2 adults and 2 children would be the best. Using both rooms I can accommodate 6 guests.( I also have a travel cot for an infant up to two and a half years depending on size).
This first floor bedroom, Hadrians wall country, can accommodate 2 people, it has a king size double bed. There is a chest of drawers with two drawers for guests to use and wardrobe space. There is central heating. Guests will share a large bathroom on the first floor which has a bath and a walk in shower. There is also a smaller shower room on the ground floor.
Guests are welcome to use the kitchen/diner which has been recently refurbished and is the hub of the house. Breakfast is an extra or you can self cater.
There is a wood burner in the dining area which is also a good place for drying boots and other walking gear. A washing machine is also available.
Haltwhistle is a small town with several pubs, some of which serve meals; a railway station and buses which connect to both Newcastle upon Tyne and Carlisle. Newcastle International airport is a 35 minute drive away, and both Glasgow and Edinburgh can be reached easily by car or train.
My house is quite central in the town and shops can be reached in seconds, the station is about a five minute walk. Despite being central it remains very quiet and peaceful. There is a bank, a chemist, two supermarkets, a post office and several other shops.
Walking in the area is fantastic. There is the Hadrian's Wall long distance footpath as well as many other guided walks around the moors to both north and south. The town hosts two walking festivals a year, in April and October which are very popular. Other guided walks are available to buy at the Tourist Information in the Library. If you want to walk parts of the Wall there is a little bus which will take you to where you want to start. This bus runs between April and the end of October. Otherwise I would be happy to take/pick you up, and in some cases to transport luggage to the next BNB.
Hexham to the east is about a 20 minute drive and is a lovely market town with an ancient Abbey, and to the west Brampton is also an interesting historic market town. There is a plethora of castles and manorial houses in Northumberland to explore by car, bike or walking.
Northumberland is a gorgeous county, its wide skies and sometimes wild weather make it a very exciting place to explore. The Haltwhistle burn is a lovely little valley where you may see red squirrels, otters, salmon leaping, herons, kestrels, buzzards and recently a pair of peregrine falcons (URL HIDDEN) the south of the town the river South Tyne is also a lovely place to walk. I have only lived here for 6 years and I love it. The people must be the friendliest in the world and are happy to chat about the place that they love.

Guest Access

Guests have access to the kitchen and lounge and in good weather the garden. There is a washing machine in an extension just off the kitchen which guests can use. I keep a shelf empty in the 'fridge if guest want to self cater and store things there.

Interaction with Guests

I try to interact as much or as little as the guests desire. I am usually around but if guests want to come and go during the time they are here I do have a key for them.

The Neighborhood

Haltwhistle is quite compact and normally very quiet. Although I guide guests to my property by using the Sainsburys supermarket, most of my guests found the house but completely missed the shop! It is well concealed especially when the trees are in leaf. The High Street and Market Square are very traditional with a variety of shops. Beyond the Market Place is the 13thCentury Holy Cross Church and beyond that the river South Tyne. The walk along the Haltwhistle Burn to the North is lovely and packed with industrial archaeology. It is the route to Hadrian's Wall which in this area is at its best. There are many museums, forts, milecastles etc connected with the Romans but Northumberland has so much more. Many castles and manorial houses dot the area, some dating from 15th Century and others from the 19th connected with the industrial revolution.
And I haven't yet mentioned the wildlife and the walking, cycling routes which abound.
There are several pubs in the town some of which serve food, and some cafes which are open during the day.

Getting Around

Haltwhistle has a railway station, trains run along the Tyne Valley from Newcastle to Carlisle where further connections can be made. There are trains every hour. My house is about a seven minute walk from the station.
There is also a bus service from Carlisle to Newcastle which comes through Haltwhistle every hour. From April to October there is a small bus which takes you up to and along Hadrian's wall calling at the various forts and museums.
