The Space

This listing is for an entire home – the first and second floor of a well decorated charming country home in a rural, natural setting. There are three bedrooms: one very large bedroom is located downstairs overlooking the water with a king size select comfort bed and a private full bath which has been recently updated in travertine with a large walk in rainfall shower and a large soaking tub.
Two more large bedrooms are located upstairs with new queen size posteurpedic beds and a shared Jack and Jill full bath as well as another full bath.

The house has a large open floor plan with a very large living room and adjacent dining room and kitchen downstairs and a sitting area upstairs. Plenty of windows provide beautiful views of the water from most rooms in the house. There is a TV and DVD players in the living room (sorry, only broadcast TV, no cable). Wifi is available by request for a fee. Kitchen is available for food preparation- full fridge, stove, oven, microwave, pots, pans, dishes, cutlery, etc. Rocking chairs and a hammock on the wrap around porches provide areas to sit or lie down and enjoy this uniquely wild setting with all the comforts of home.

Our low country home located adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway and in an amazing natural setting inside the Timucuan Historic and Ecological Preserve. You will feel as though you are traveling back in time as you follow a historic canopied road approaching this uniquely beautiful home site. If you seek privacy and tranquility you will find it here, but you are still just minutes away from Amelia Island and Jacksonville. Come enjoy a truly unique and pristine wilderness spot that is still convenient to city life. If you would love to intimately experience the outdoors but are not into sleeping bags and tents this is about as good as it gets. Hiking boots and daypacks or kayaks and paddles to start the day, a full day adventure, followed by a hot shower or a soak in the large soaking tub, AC/heat, TV and internet, and an adult beverage before hitting the hay in a clean soft bed. Rain on the tin roof just adds to the charm and ambiance. Gourmet dining a short drive away.

Adventure awaits:
-Our 3 acre home site is a refuge to some of the resident wildlife including white tail deer, sea otter, and American bald eagles, (and many other bird species located along the Eastern Flyway). Talbot I State Park is also the location of one of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trails ((website hidden)).

-Five miles of continuous beaches on Little Talbot Island State Park is a short 5 minute drive away. Hiking, kayaking, bicycling, fishing, bird watching, anything involving the outdoors is located right off the back porch. Ten miles of paved bike paths on the East Coast Greenway, hiking trails through pristine coastal hammock country, numerous historic sites including Kingsley Plantation, Fort Clinch, Amelia Island Museum, Fort Caroline, etc.

-Just a short 8 minute drive to Huguenot Memorial Park- one of the last beaches in Florida that allows beach driving. No need to carry loads of beach stuff. Just drive in, park, unload, have fun.

-Amelia Island State Park is also close by- a great beach that also allows beach driving. It’s also a great fishing spot.

-Bring your kayak or canoe (or rent one at Kayak Amelia just 5 minutes away) and paddle miles of remote tidal estuaries in the Timucuan Preserve.

-Bring your bike or rent one at Kayak Amelia and pedal along the miles of beaches or nearby East Coast Greenway dedicated paved bike paths.

  • The rooms look exactly like in the pictures--pretty much everything was just as described. John was a very responsive host and was patient with all my questions. The property was absolutely quiet and peaceful. Just wish we could have stayed a few more days!

  • Great house, great location. We really enjoyed our stay at Island Home. The setting was fabulous, so much better than staying squashed in with everyone else, or in the artificial landscaping of one of the expensive resorts. There was a deer in the front yard every evening, as well as a peacock couple along the entrance road. We highly recommend this as a chance to spend a relaxing time in a natural setting. The house was comfortable and as advertised; the pictures do it justice. We could come again. Thanks for sharing.

  • We loved our stay at John's place. What a stunning house and setting! It is definitely a wonderful place for a family get together or a completely relaxing (virtually technology-free!) vacation. John gave us nice suggestions about nearby sightseeing places (for hiking, beaches, kayaking, biking) and restaurants (in quaint little areas of Amelia Island and the town of St. Augustine). He was a very sweet and communicative host, always accessible and attentive, and the house is a perfect retreat from stresses of urban living.

  • Everything about John's home is great. It was very clean and spacious. The porch is my favorite feature. John was very helpful and let us know everything when we arrived. Great host!

  • My family and I stayed at John's place while in town for a wedding. The house is beautfiul and spacious and bright -- a wonderful place for a family/group of friends to gather and make memories. It rained throughout the time we were there, but the house kept a smile on our faces the whole time. It's a really nice place!

My father arrived first and met with John, who took his time showing him the house and the property. My father was very impressed with how nice and welcoming John was toward him. It made the stay that much more comfortable.

  • John's home is a welcoming space situated on gorgeous land and near so much natural beauty. His welcome to us and tour were helpful and we had every resource we could need to make the most of the weekend.

We were a group of six friends catching up from different parts of the country, and his porch made for a perfect site to catch up and chat long into the night. The furniture was extraordinarily comfortable, the house was beautiful and John's photographs on the walls made for a great place to spend a few days. Can't thank him enough.

  • John was very helpful & attentive. He obviously loves the home & welcomed us in person upon our arrival. We had a complete book of nearby restaurants and activities at our disposal. We enjoyed sitting on the spacious porch in between our running to & fro. The house is plenty big enough for teenagers to spread out while parents can have some privacy. Peacocks, a deer, and a beggar kitty greeted us many days in the backyard.
We recommend the 4 mi hike at little talbot park, kayak Amelia, and a lovely walk down the 1.5 mile driveway at dusk. The Florida weather was sunny & mild. This was an awesome cozy place to relax. We hope to return and try out the bike trails.

  • My wife and I spent four nights at John's place and it was fantastic. The house is located right in the heart of a state park and it is surrounded by live oaks and palmettos. The pictures describe the house very accurately.
John is an amazing host. On the first day he stopped by to show us how things work around the house and we spent a few hours chatting about his adventurous life. If you rent the place you will understand what I am talking about. There are photographs of his trips hung on the walls with great care.
The rental is located half way between Amelia Island and Jacksonville, and just five minutes away from a spectacular beach. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from on Amelia Island and some just minutes away that offer fresh seafood. Check John's recommendations if you do not know what to choose.
I highly recommend this place for any type of getaway. It's perfect.

  • John's home was the absolute perfect setting for our family gathering, celebrating my mom's 91st!
The house ~ spacious, well appointed, comfortable, clean, kitchen well-equipped, and the wrap around porch and view ~ perfect!
Our host, John ~ kind, helpful, available, responsive.
The area ~ delightful ~ a 5 minute drive to wonderful Little Talbot State Park for great beaches and wonderful walks, and to Kayak Amelia for kayak and bike rentals.
We were all very happy here. If you are looking for a place away from everything, yet close to everything, this is it!
And, the peacock next door that comes to visit or sits in the high branches of the pine is a real delight!
Thank you, John. Hope to return one day.

About
Jacksonville is a great place and I've lived here for 30 years. There's lots to do- boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, surfing, cycling and fishing. I've enjoyed all of these activities over the years but fishing has become my passion. And it is great to enjoy such great fishing in your own backyard. I also love to travel and have been all over for work and play.
