About This Listing
Kristie Alsop's Best of Both worlds programme on Channel 4 recently featured this romantic getaway for two.
There is something about this thatched cottage that brings out the romance. We have hosted many honeymooners, couples that become engaged while here, and anniversary trips. It is simply lovely and cosy in an architecturally unique building near to the Welsh coast.
Our situation provides guests with an excellent base to explore the many local attractions and the Coastal Path. Ffynnon Oer is not too far (nor too close) to the coastal villages. We are “just right.” By staying at Ffynnon Oer you will avoid the tourist crowds while being able to dip into the beach villages (or the water) as you please.
Ffynnon Oer is also not too isolated. Getting here does not require a four-wheel drive to navigate a pot-holled farm road. We are located on a good road so guests can easily hop in their car for a quick explore. Our guests enjoy the fact that Ffynnon Oer is a “hot spot” (compared to other holiday locations). We offer reliable internet with wi-fi so you can sit on the sofa and plan your next adventure. Most guests receive a decent mobile signal. No worries about having to roam around in a field or hilltop trying to get a signal!
On top of all its practical advantages, the cottage itself will be one of the highlights of your trip. Ffynnon Oer is one of the best surviving examples of an eighteenth century clom cottages in Wales. It is Grade II listed in recognition of its “outstanding architectural interest. “ The cottage was built around 1750, and although there have been alterations, the interior arrangement and many details are original to that time. The “crogloffts” are traditional sleeping platforms that were once common in West Wales, as were wickerwork chimneys such as the one seen here.
Apart from doing repair work, no one has built in clom in this area for well over a century. The walls are protected with a traditional limewash and the oak crucks and roof structure are all original and untouched since the eighteenth century.
Our gardens are lovely any time of the year. Even in winter, there are over 20 different varieties of snowdrops. The front of the house is planted with a rose and herb garden. Please cut the roses and herbs for your enjoyment.
We are dog friendly. Canine visitors adore the coastal path or exploring the countryside.
Bath towels, bed linens, and bathroom welcome pack are included.
The house is situated in a small hamlet of houses. We are near to the beaches of ceredigion, Aberaeron (15 minutes), Llangranog (30 minutes) Lampeter, the Llanerchaeron estate, Aberystwyth (35 minutes) and lovely dining at Ty Mawr Mansion which has been awarded five stars from VisitWales. Paragliding and walking is popular in the area.
This property is co-located with another property that sleeps six. Both can be booked at the same time for a large party of eight.

Interaction with Guests
During the winter months your hosts usually are next door in Uchaf. We can help you with any questions, provide directions to some of the "secret places" of interest, and help with all sorts of maps.
Everyone loves the drama of the Welsh coast. The peaceful view of sheep across the meadow and our lovely gardens. View our blog for lots of ideas on what to do and where to eat: search for 'springwater cottages" plus my name, "Melise" to find the blog.
There is a private drive. A car is really a necessity. Even though buses are available, to experience the area fully you will want to have transport. West Wales isn't densely populated and the villages are spread out over hills and through valleys. To poke around properly requires a car or a commitment to hiking! This is part of the beauty of the place.
Other Things to Note
Towels, starter firewood, welcome tea & coffee, and bathroom amenities are provided to make a cosy welcome.
Our thatch insurance does not allow candles anywhere in the house. If you bring a grill please use it as far from the house as possible and watch for sparks. One well-behaved dog is welcome. Please note the garden is not completely enclosed.
The cottage felt very warm, cosy and welcoming upon our arrival and proved to be a very relaxing space for a few days. Although there is no proper shower, there is a very nice bath and it was actually quite a treat to have baths rather than showers for a few days so this was no negative. The cottage was very well equipped in terms of the kitchen, TV, wifi and linen and towels. The location is a very small hamlet of just a few houses, but is surrounded by beautiful countryside and nearby Aberaeron offers a host of good cafes, restaurants and shops as well as superb coastlines. Aberystwyth is also not far away and there are some lovely walks to be had in the surrounding area.
Thank you for such a wonderful and relaxing retreat. More than we hoped for and thoroughly enjoyed the surrounding area.
This nook is an idyll and Melise a genius for finding and making it so
Idyllic little cottage heightened by the sunny weather we had. Never expected breakfast outside in April. Incredibly clean; didn't spot a single spider (unlike our house).
The road outside can get a bit busy and you need to watch yourself on the steps to the bed. But we had a whale of a time.
Having our own holiday to france cancelled just days before, we were not prepared to have a week in Wales that would match the romance of Marseille. However, Malise was prompt at accepting our booking and was consistently helpful and accommodating for our needs.
When we arrived, the housekeeper greeted us into the beautiful, delightful cottage through a tiny little door where the sun was pouring in through.
We immediately settled in and had the most romantic and restful week of our lives!! We took lovely riverside walks (also recommended by Malise) and had excellent meals in local country restaurants. We have not a single complaint and would love to come back again and again.
Thank you so much for accepting us on such a short notice, and giving us an even better holiday we could have hoped for in France!! X

About the Host, Melise
I live in the Washington, DC area. I am the founder and managing partner of a technology law firm located in the heart of Georgetown, Washington, DC. My specialty is Internet law. I love to walk, bicycle, knit, and travel frequently. My second home is Ffynnon Oer Uchaf, a thatched cottage in Wales. The main house is listed as "Thatched cottage retreat nr to coast" on Airbnb. I am most often found at Ffynnon during the "off season" when I am always busy improving things. Not my "off season" by any means! Please give me ideas for improvements. I want Ffynnon to be an extraordinary retreat for our guests.
