The Space

There is something about this thatched cottage that brings out the romance. We have hosted many honeymooners, couples that become engaged while here, and anniversary trips. It is simply lovely and cosy in an architecturally unique building near to the Welsh coast.

Our situation provides guests with an excellent base to explore the many local attractions and the Coastal Path. Ffynnon Oer is not too far (nor too close) to the coastal villages. We are “just right.” By staying at Ffynnon Oer you will avoid the tourist crowds while being able to dip into the beach villages (or the water) as you please.

Ffynnon Oer is also not too isolated. Getting here does not require a four-wheel drive to navigate a pot-holled farm road. We are located on a good road so guests can easily hop in their car for a quick explore. Our guests enjoy the fact that Ffynnon Oer is a “hot spot” (compared to other holiday locations). We offer reliable internet with wi-fi so you can sit on the sofa and plan your next adventure. Most guests receive a decent mobile signal. No worries about having to roam around in a field or hilltop trying to get a signal!

On top of all its practical advantages, the cottage itself will be one of the highlights of your trip. Ffynnon Oer is one of the best surviving examples of an eighteenth century clom cottages in Wales. It is Grade II listed in recognition of its “outstanding architectural interest. “ The cottage was built around 1750, and although there have been alterations, the interior arrangement and many details are original to that time. The “crogloffts” are traditional sleeping platforms that were once common in West Wales, as were wickerwork chimneys such as the one seen here.

Apart from doing repair work, no one has built in clom in this area for well over a century. The walls are protected with a traditional limewash and the oak crucks and roof structure are all original and untouched since the eighteenth century.

Our gardens are lovely any time of the year. Even in winter, there are over 20 different varieties of snowdrops. The front of the house is planted with a rose and herb garden. Please cut the roses and herbs for your enjoyment.

We are dog friendly. Canine visitors adore the coastal path or exploring the countryside.

Bath towels, bed linens, and bathroom welcome pack are included.

The house is situated in a small hamlet of houses. We are near to the beaches of ceredigion, Aberaeron (15 minutes), Llangranog (30 minutes) Lampeter, the Llanerchaeron estate, Aberystwyth (35 minutes) and lovely dining at Ty Mawr Mansion which has been awarded five stars from VisitWales. Paragliding and walking is popular in the area.

This property is co-located with another property that sleeps six. Both can be booked at the same time for a large party of eight.

Please visit our blog for more photos, latest news and things to do in the area. Airbnb will not allow the posting of a URL. So, you can find our blog by searching for "Tales from Wales" and the words "spring water cottages."

Interaction with Guests

During the winter months your hosts usually are next door in Uchaf. We can help you with any questions, provide directions to some of the "secret places" of interest, and help with all sorts of maps.

Getting around

There is a private drive. A car is really a necessity. Even though buses are available, to experience the area fully you will want to have transport. West Wales isn't densely populated and the villages are spread out over hills and through valleys. To poke around properly requires a car or a commitment to hiking! This is part of the beauty of the place.

Other Things to Note

Towels, starter firewood, welcome tea & coffee, and bathroom amenities are provided to make a cosy welcome.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • We had a wonderful week at Melise's cottage in Wales. Melise was consistently quick to respond to messages and offered loads of great recommendations for restaurants and activities in the area. Petra was very welcoming and helpful as well. We felt well looked after!

The cottage itself was just as lovely as in the photos. It was private, very clean and well equipped. The wifi was fast and reliable, as promised, which was great for working from home during the week.

The only thing I would mention is that we were glad to have our car with us, because the country roads did not look particularly pedestrian friendly and I think we got to see a lot more of the neighboring towns than we would have otherwise.

I would whole heartedly recommend this cottage to anyone considering a stay!

  • An amazing place to stay with tons of quaint charm and personality. Some highlights of our stay besides the cottage itself were the Sheep wandering around in the back yard and the log fire to keep toasty warm on a rainy day.

Just the break we needed, thank you!

    Response from Melise:

Thanks for the feedback, Jason. Figuring a way to get a proper shower in Isaf has been on the list. Now that our thatch has been done and paid for, upgrading the bath is next!

  • We had an amazing stay in the cottage. I loved the smell of the thatch when you came in and it's magical waking up in the eves. Melise has thought of everything you'd need in the small kitchen and bathroom, and the garden (email hidden) to have breakfast. The surrounding countryside is stunning and the local beaches are outstanding.

The only thing I would say is the stairs from the upstairs are very steep so if you had mobility issues that might cause you some problems.

We actually got engaged on our trip so it'll always hold extra special memories.

    Thanks Melise!

  • This is a really nice cottage- perfect for a romantic getaway. The setting was lovely, as was the cottage itself. Definitely use a sat-nav to get to the cottage, as it can be easily missed in the dark. The neighbors were very friendly and welcoming, and some of the nearby towns such as Aberaeron were brilliant for lunch and a wonder !
    Would highly recommend it!

  • Words and photos don't do it justice. We were blown away by the cottage and the surroundings - perfect for a cosy November long weekend in front of the fire and snuggled up in the crogloft.

We travelled to Aberystwyth by train and then on to Temple Bar by bus, a very manageable journey of ~1hr from Aber. There's a ten minute walk from Temple Bar to the cottage along quite a busy road - not suitable for children or those with lots of luggage, but there are grass verges along the route. A good eco option if you're there for a short break and don't need a hire car!

  • We cannot recommend this place enough. Our hosts were perfect, from cookies and a welcome on arrival, to making sure we had enough firewood to keep us cosy! And the cottage is one in a million.
We were after a place to escape work and the busy world we live and this place was heaven.

The cottage has so much character and after 6 days I was still marvelling at all the little details!

The surrounding area is packed full of beautiful coastal walks so there is plenty to do if you're outdoorsy.

Again, couldn't have been more pleased.
    Thanks again. James and Jenna

  • We booked a last minute holiday and came across Melise's gorgeous thatched cottage. She was so lovely and quick to respond to our enquiry. We adored the cottage it was beautiful, clean and really romantic. We were only 15 mins from (email hidden) port and with the log burning fire we were in heaven. Thank you for a brief but wonderful stay.

  • The most beautiful quaint little cottage I've ever been to. From seeing the posting here on Airbnb to arriving at Ffynnon Oer Isaf, every little detail was a discovery and a delight, making us appreciate all the love and care put into restoring and maintaining this historic property. Even though you experience the history of the place as soon as you step inside, all the conveniences you'd expect to find in a modern home are there. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer!

The cottage is warm and cosy, making even rainy days enjoyable - it felt so good just to stay in. However, if weather permits, the surrounding countryside provides many a scenic route to explore. Our favourites were Hafod forest (beautiful waterfalls and landscapes, mostly easy to walk) and the seaside path between Llangrannog and New Quay (lots of climbing up and down, but the views are amazing). Aberystwyth is (email hidden) worth a visit. And dining at Ty Mawr is a very special experience - not cheap at all, but worth every penny you spend there.

Thank you Melise for being the great host that you are, we enjoyed this stay a lot and would love to come back! Maria and Yuri.

  • This is a beautiful little cottage that has been wonderfully updated with all the modern conveniences needed for a great stay. Melise was super helpful and friendly and the weather was beautiful (thanks). The small touches (having a prepared fire ready and the toiletries for example) reflects the care and love that has gone into this place. The surrounding area is very pretty and we had a wonderful stay. Thanks so much.

  • What a wonderful secluded romantic getaway! With this unique cottage as a base of operations, we had an absolutely wonderful time exploring Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire in our rental car!

It is clear that a great deal of care and craftsmanship has gone into the restoration and upkeep of this special place. The natural beauty of the surrounding area complements the handsome lodgings.

There's many fun adventures to be had in Llandeilo, Aberaeron, and Lampeter. The cottage is well stocked with good local information for tourism sites and restaurants in the area.

    Highly recommended!
