Borrowing camping gear from Dave was fantastic. He has a great stock of different things to custom-tailor the right equipment for your trip. He also knows the surroundings, being supportive and helpful so that you will get the best out of your time when camping on Kauai. Next time we will come again!
A nice inexpensive place to stay, well located for going to the north or south of the island. It is a bit close to the highway so it can be a little noisy in the morning. Dave is very helpful with information and will arrange outings if you are interested. He also was kind enough to provide us with eggs from his chickens.
My husband and I had a great stay at the Coconut Cottage last week. We stayed with Dave for 4 nights. The cottage was cute and comfortable, and had everything we needed. We especially liked the that the kitchen area included all the appliances we could have needed, plenty of counter space, and a full size fridge. As for the stairs up to the sleeping area, yes they move a little, but they felt perfect safe and sturdy. The composting toilet and outdoor bathroom/shower were fine to use. The design of the bathroom and the rustic nature of the your surroundings means you will come across bugs including roaches, but that's to be expected. One of the roaches even managed to show away in our suitcase and came out to say hi when we got home. We liked the farm, especially the friendly goats and pigs, and the farm fresh eggs. We did go to the private beach nearby, but, perhaps because of the high tide this time of year, it was more boulders than beach. Overall, it was a wonderful place to stay for people who aren't into the sterile, manicured resort-type accommodations, and Dave was super helpful with local tips - he told us exactly where to find wild sea turtles feeding and he was right!
We had a great time at Kauai with Dave's camping gear. Kauai is a beautiful island and it's awesome to camp in this environment.
Dave was easy to work with. Prior to our arrival he emailed us frequently and we called him when we arrived at Lihue to pick up the gear. He spend some time with us to give great recommendations what to do and where to camp.
The equipment contains everything you need for camping: tent, sleeping-bags, cooking stuff,… I think, Dave prepared the gear for the Kalalau trail, but we used it for car-camping and it worked out very well. Just tell Dave in advance so that he knows.
We camped a few nights at Haena and at Salt Pond Beach park, which were awesome campgrounds, directly at the beach. As we had only three days at Kauai, we didn't do the whole Kalalau trail - we just hiked the fist 4 miles to a nice waterfall. If you are at Kauai, I would also recommend going to the Waimea Canyon, which was very beautiful. We hiked a nice trail (canyon-trail) and this took us about 3 hours.
All in all I highly recommend the camping gear from Dave, as you don't have to bring everything to the island. Dave is a great person and he is very concerned that everything works out well for his guests .
We had wonderful days camping on Kauai, also because of the camping equipment we rented from Dave. It was all we needed for the Napali coast. Dave was really patient and packed all the camping stuff together with us, gave really good tips and advices (never forget the goodies like chocolate) for camping on Kauai, because he knows all about the best spots. In the beginning he asked us where we aimed to camp and then decided which gear we needed, but also always asked us for our opinion if we might have needed something else. Also the camping gear was really clean and mostly new. I can really recommend renting the camping gear from Dave, because he is experienced, knows his island and helps you having the best camping trip in your life!
Loved staying in the coconut cottage. Very cozy and comfortable place. Perfectly spacious for two guests. Full kitchen equipment, plus a few borrowed seasoning items from Dave. Great place to stay while exploring Kauai. We spent our days hiking, swimming, and snorkeling, and then enjoyed the coziness of the cottage in the evening. The property is quite close to the main road around the island, so traffic is audible. Also, if you are a light sleeper, roosters may keep you awake. I imagine this would be the case just about anywhere on Kauai though since there are wild roaming chickens everywhere.
Dave was great we were not able to rent his camping gear, because of an emergency that came up. But Dave was great in returning a portion of our payment.
We actually got the Bamboo Hut for our accommodation which was nestled in some shady trees. The outdoor shower was terrific - no hot water but very refreshing after a hot day on the beaches. Didn't mind the compost toilet which didn't use chemicals at all - just a cup full of what looked like wood shavings dumped on top of the waste. Seemed very sanitary and efficient to us over the week. Great location to visit both the south and the north parts of the island - about an hour and a half either way. Magnificent mountain structures stood as the backdrop - some good to climb. Even though it rained quite a bit while we were on Kauai it didn't bother us much except that we didn't do as much hiking as planned due to the muddy paths. Dave offered a free 4 hour adventure tour of the north on our last day which was superb - at least 4 sights we didn't know about and would never have seen without this event. Thanks again Dave.
Our stay with Dave was only for one night and we ended up staying in a different accommodation so, unfortunately, can't provide feedback on the bamboo cottage which looked delightful.
Dave was an amazing host, and greeted us and introduced us to his warm place. We felt comfortable and safe as we slept soundly through the beautiful sound of rain on the roof. The following morning, we awoke to a teeming property right below the mountains, full of vegetables and with even some animals!
This is probably the coolest place you could stay on the island. It's a sweet environment, doesn't feel cheesy, and is easy to relax in.
The shower & bathroom is easy (its eco-friendly too) and not weird.
Definitely go during a time when you can spend time on the island and enjoy his adventures, they sound like SO MUCH fun!
PS. Make sure to pay attention to his directions, DO NOT GO by the address that airbnb lists --- as it will end up in you being lost and on the phone with dave for a while.
You gotta stay here! We will go back the next time we are in Kauai!
