Get away from it all!
This cozy 2 bedroom guest area is located on the downstairs level of the 3 bdrm. guest cottage. The guest cottage is separate from our main home, uniquely connected by decks & stairs. We're on 1.5 private acres close to Kona.

The Space

Our private 2 bedroom guest area is located on the lower level of our 3 bedroom guest cottage. This guest cottage is separate from our main house which is uniquely connected by stairways, overhangs and decks.
Our home has a really unique, whimsy feel to it. The entire home including guests quarters and lanai's (decks) is around 4,000 square feet so it has a very open yet private feel to it.

This area is great if you're traveling with a friend, children or just want to enjoy a spacious area at a great price.
There are two rooms and a large sun room/sitting room with ocean and garden view.

The pueo (owl) room has a queen size bed, cable tv, full closet, dresser and garden view.
The bamboo room has a toilet room, queen size bed and full size dresser for clothing and cable television. There is no tv in the bamboo room however there is wifi throughout the entire property.

Each room has it's own private bathroom.
The Pueo room has an outdoor, enclosed full bath. It's definitely "Funky Hawaiian Style". But clean and functional.
The Bamboo room has an "en suite" (in the bedroom) toilet room and an outdoor shower. The outdoor shower is really neat and probably unlike anything you've ever experienced when it comes to a shower! We've had guests that admitted being apprehensive about showering outdoors and say they really enjoyed it afterwards. I've personally seen rainbows dancing in the mist and I'o (hawaiian hawks) circling overhead. At night, shower to the light of flickering tiki torches and songs from coqui tree frogs chirping.

There is a sun room that is accessible via both bedrooms. The sun room has a queen size sofa sleeper and full size couch.
The price is for 4 people. Any other guests are charged $30 extra per night.

There is a mini fridge, coffee maker, toaster oven, microwave and induction cook top. It is easy to create or heat up and enjoy simple meals such as rice, eggs, cereal, toast, oatmeal, soup, etc.

Guest Access

You will have access to the adjacent sun room. This sun room has a really nice view of the pacific ocean and tropical foliage below.
These rooms also have access to the back lanai (Hawaiian deck) which has a teak patio table with chairs and umbrella, a BBQ grill and sink for washing dishes, cups, etc.

Interaction with Guests

We love meeting our guests.
Our small family owns a bakery and cafe in downtown Kona so we work and run errands quite a bit.
On work days we leave the house around 4:00 am and get home in the early afternoons. We usually end up going to be pretty early or just relaxing around the house. On our "off" days, we're usually playing, doing house/yard work or relaxing at home.
We invite you to come and enjoy a complimentary delicious home made NY Bagel and cup of 100% Kona Coffee, Organic Apple Juice or Tropicana OJ. (Available to each guest, one time during your stay). Please enjoy 10% off anytime during your stay with us as well. Our cafe has GF and Vegan options too!
We want you to know that we are happy to see you and answer any questions you have regarding your stay or area activities.
When we are home, if you hear us hanging out in the main house you're more than welcome to come by and say hello! We love meeting our guests, however if you prefer to be left alone and just relax, we totally respect that and it's all good with us.

Once you've booked your stay with us, you will be given our cell phone numbers. We are best reached via text and also via the airbnb message thread.
Once you've booked your stay with us, you will be given both our cell phone numbers. We are best reached via text and also via the airbnb message thread. We always have our phones on us and are very good about replying and being in touch.

The Neighborhood

We live in a beautiful area, nestled in the hills just outside of Kailua Kona, known as Holualoa. Driving down the road to your home away from home, you'll see coffee farms, banana trees and macadamia nut groves. Our neighbors are mostly coffee growers and farmers. You don't see any other houses from our home but are conveniently located minutes from Keauhou Resort and Kailua Kona where you'll find all the modern conveniences of shopping, dining, movie theaters, entertainment, grocery stores and of course wonderful beaches, snorkeling spots and amazing island adventures.
Our comfortable elevation of 1400' allows for cool breezes and no need for AC. In fact, during the winter months (January & February) you'll find it can be a bit "chilly" in the mornings (around mid 60's).

Getting around

Our home is located approximately 25-30 minutes from the Kona International Airport and 2 hours from the Hilo Airport.
Renting a car is a very ideal when staying at our place and we recommend a GPS, not only to find our home that is privately tucked away in the hills but to also assist you in getting around the big island in general.

Other Things to Note

We have 3 dogs that live in the courtyard outside the sun room. 2 are big dogs and as you'll see from our reviews, are very sweet and "good boys". In one year we've had only one complaint about "our girl" barking and we can assure you it was unfortunately exaggerated.
The dogs are able to come up to the sun room gate and the "little boy" Maka does have a strong bark (when he does bark).
We spray our yard once a week with a pet deodorizer and pick up poo daily.
There are wild chickens that run around from time to time. There are also roosters (all over the island). The roosters crow at daybreak and if it's a full moon, you might hear a "crow" in the middle of the night.
Coqui Frogs: The island has it's share of coqui frogs. They "chirp" from early evening into the night. People always think they're a sort of night bird. It's a very sweet, pleasant sound. If it's the dry season, you might not hear any at all. If we've had rain, it's a symphony.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • The place is quite a few minutes from Kona, placed amongst the coffee farms in a very calm and quiet environment if you neglect the frogs and the calls from the roosters at night. I, who usually am quite sensitive to sounds, loved it.
There are two rooms directly facing the dog yard, the dogs bark quite a lot and can seem a bit scary although they are just adorable.
Try to get the room in top of the garage, that one seems to be the prettiest by far! I really enjoyed our out door shower, it was just great! The garden is lush and the view of the sunset is calming.
Antoinette and her husband are both very welcoming and friendly, in all ways positive and warm. I'd highly recommend anyone without a phobia against dogs or spiders to stay there.

  • Antoinette is a really nice and helpful host!! Helped us a lot!! We appreciate that warm experiment! Thanks!

  • Three adults stayed in the 2 bedrooms. While everything was as stated and all convenience were there, the layout was a little awkward for us. Awhile ago there was only 1 toilet, in the other bedroom, but an additional shower and toilet have been added off the 2nd bedroom. The only sink for dishes and cleanup was outside on the patio. The garden shower was nice to use but the new one had some hot water issues. The open, somewhat screened porch was nice to enjoy for reading, great views, but a little too buggy for us. The mosquitos loved me and took away from enjoying the porch. The directions were good and our GPS did a great job too. The gardens were beautiful and we got to "enjoy " the coqui frogs too.

  • We absolutely LOVED this place! Antoinette is such a great host and we felt more than welcome in her beautiful place. The rooms, bathrooms and the awesome outdoor shower are wonderful. We are super happy to have spent two nights there otherwise we would have probably missed out on this heavenly spot on the "upcountry" Kona side. Also visited her bakery and loved the banana bread!
We would recommend this in a heatbeat and would love to come back anytime!

  • The rooms were a good size and the beds were comfortable. It gets hot in Kona but since the house was higher up in the mountain, the evenings were cool.

We were greeted when we arrived and given all the necessary items. The BBQ worked nicely and they even gave us some rice to cook. I was a little apprehensive about the outdoor shower - mainly because I was worried about being bit my mosquitoes but it was really quite awesome.

Youve got to okay with dogs and cats since they have a few of them walking around. All were friendly though. The WiFi they provided was also very strong which really helped with the limited cellular connection.

All in all, it was a pleasant stay.

  • My wife, our two daughters (ages 12 and 10), and I stayed at Antoinette's place for several days. Antoinette and her nice family were wonderful hosts. Their guest houses are lovely, the outdoor shower was private and enjoyable, and we were very happy. They have cats and dogs, which our daughters loved playing with. They were very accommodating when our schedule changed unexpectedly. We would stay here whenever we come back, and recommend it highly.

  • Antoinette and Johnny were welcoming, warm, helpful, and friendly. The rooms were comfortable and the space was a great size. Beautiful property with beautiful views of the ocean. Wonderful experience!

  • This is a very beautiful spot with beautiful people. Very family friendly.Everyone there made us feel very welcomed and made sure we were happy.
Wonderful view of horizon and ocean.
Not far from Kona center but felt like away from everything.
Great peaceful sleep with great dreams when we stayed at Antoinnettes.

    March 2013
  • We stayed in the 2 bedroom part of the guest house with our 3 year old and 7 month old baby and we loved it. The two rooms open onto a lovely mostly screened outdoor sitting area with a beautiful ocean view - we enjoyed watching the sunset from our outdoor sitting area surrounding by the lush garden.
The location is fantastic and convenient for both Kona and the area around Captain Cook which was were a lot of our favourite spots were. John and Antoinette and their daughter were very welcoming and accommodating and were great hosts - the bagels and banana bread were delicious! Our son loved reading all the kids books in the bookshelves and feeding the dogs treats. Our sink and shower were located outside, but once we got used to the idea we really liked the outdoor shower! We thought that this place was great value, nice and clean and in a great spot. Thanks we will be back next time we are in the area!

Taos High School
Pele's Paint Your Own Pottery Studio~Up Country Bakery & Cafe
Aloha~Greetings! We're originally from "The Land Of Enchantment" Taos, New Mexico and moved to Hawaii 9 years ago after living in Alaska for 3 years. My husband Jonathan and I have been married for 15 years and have an awesome 14 year old daughter, Luna. Our family is very entrepreneurial & non conventional. We live a very passionate life on the edge, to the fullest and are very passionate about experiencing the new and unknown. We are risk takers and entrepreneurial. Our friends are (never) amazed that we're creating something new, working on a new project, running around like crazies, expanding, remodeling.....pretty much DOING. We love being able to share lots of time together and work for ourselves while living on this amazing island. We own a popular bakery & cafe called "Evolution" located in the heart of downtown Kailua Kona. We are known for creating delicious, healthy meals, juices and smoothies as well as having the most AWESOME pastry case in all of Kona. We use all organic ingredients in our baking and lots of local, organic and Non-GMO ingredients in our offerings. Our family is Vegan so we also offer lots of vegan options and Gluten Free items too! We also have a contemporary ceramics business called "Pele's Paint Your Own Pottery" (named after Hawaii's Volcano Goddess). This fun business give us the opportunity to create art projects with children at one of the most beautiful golf and beach clubs in the world. We just embarked on the vacation rental business after moving into our dream home/property last year. After the experience of staying in some really neat Hostels and vacation homes in Alaska, we thought it would be neat to be able to have a space to offer that experience ourselves one day. And here we are. We've been LOVING the experience and have made some great friends through this really fun business adventure. Jon and I are very casual and conscious hosts. We want you to feel comfortable while staying at our home and are super easy to communicate with. Because of our super busy lives, we can be on the go quite a bit, however we're very easy to reach via cell phone, email or bakery number if needed. While it's been a while since we've traveled, we LOVE exploring new places and plan to travel abroad very soon. Jon traveled to different places in Europe years ago. I've yet had the opportunity to go there. Top of the dream list is England, Scotland, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Egypt and an African Safari. Jon is a certified diver and we have a 21' Ali'i Kai fishing boat. He was a commercial fisherman in Alaska for over 15 years and also a building contractor for many years. Our 14 year old daughter is "unschooled". She's really mellow, loves animals and sports. She runs the front of the house at our café and can make a mean latte or Americano! She can easily handle a line out the door with calamity and ease. She recently hired a personal trainer and is in the process herself of becoming a certified trainer. She also paddles and races with her canoe racing team several times a week, is a certified SCUBA diver, certified in CPR and is also in a year long, Hawaiian Studies Canoe Sailing program called "Na Pe'a". So that's the story of the Sharfin's in a nutshell. If you're looking for a beautiful home to stay in with people who are really mellow and real. Check us out!
