Makena's Place has one little playful dog, she is an outside dog and doesn't come into the house.

Breakfast is included and delicious home cooked meals are available on request at an additional cost (also depends on if your host is available to cook that evening). If you love coffee, you are in luck as there is an Italian coffee making machine. If you prefer tea, your host will brew you the meanest cuppa – Chai!

Makena’s Place is named after the vivacious 6 year old who will never fail to keep you entertained. Your host and her daughter have their bedrooms in a separate wing of the house to ensure maximum privacy for both guests and permanent residents.

Makena’s Place is a 7 minute walk to the modern Karen shopping centre – historically known as the Karen Dukas - where one can find banks, restaurants, supermarkets and African Curio shops. Only 5 minutes away is the famous Talisman restaurant, situated on the main Ngong Road, which leads to the city of Nairobi.

Karen is home to some of some of Nairobi's best known tourist attractions including the Giraffe Centre, the Karen Blixen Museum, the animal orphanage and the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary, to name a few.

Spending most of my time travelling abroad for my work, I avoid anonymous hotels to look for welcoming and inspiring places. Makena's Place is the nicest place I have found in Nairobi after more than 20 stays in Kenya, thanks to the high elegance and rare hospitality of Chichi Seii, and to the pure charm of this simple and beautiful property located in Karen's exceptional nature.
Makena's place is conveniently located, in the heart of Karen, near the mall (supermarkets, shops, restaurants, ATM, etc...) and highways.
It is a place where one can work efficiently (absolute quietness!) and rejuvenate as well.
The value for money is excellent for Nairobi. On business or tourism, do not hesitate.

  • Makena's Place is an oasis of peace, tranquility and comfort. Chichi is a superb host and we were made to feel completely at home. We were a few work colleagues on a business trip, and will definitely be coming back. I'll also be bringing my wife and kids to stay here next time we are in Nairobi.

  • Chichi was a wonderful host and her house was warm and welcoming. It was perfect for our family with 2 bedrooms for the kids and 1 for my husband and I. We had our own wing which afforded privacy and the entire place was safe and secure. The kids loved the trampoline, playing with lulu the dog and running around the gardens. Easy access to anything in Karen and a quick drive to Nairobi, it was definitely more comfortable and affordable than a hotel. Chichi helped arrange a driver to see the sites and was extremely helpful and friendly.

  • My father and I stayed at Makena's place (in two single rooms with a shared bathroom) for three nights and found it very comfortable and safe (important in Nairobi). Chichi was a great host - gave us a couple of excellent recommendations for dinner, lent us a mobile phone to use while we were there (handy for booking tours and calling taxi drivers), and arranged a driver to pick us up from the airport on arrival (for 3000 shillings, the standard rate). The rooms are clean, nice and very comfortable, and the house is very quiet at night. We hardly saw Chichi and her daughter Makena, though they live on the other side of the same house.

Breakfast was simple and varied each day (pancakes, omelettes, cereal) and the Kenyan coffee Chichi made us was excellent.

The only downside was that the wifi mentioned in the description refers to a dongle - so you need a laptop with USB port to have access. It doesn't work with an iPad or iPhone, so we were without internet while we were at Makena's place, which made it tricky to book tours and make other plans. Not a big problem as there are plenty of cafes with free wifi (a taxi ride away), but something to keep in mind.

Overall a nice place to stay, and it was good to stay in a real home, instead of a hotel, in Nairobi.

I am a performing artiste and a TV set designer. I am a mother of a 5 year old girl. I am a Christian and I love life. My favourite travel destination Diani Beach (Kenyan coast)... I have lived in Sydney and I loved it, I love Paris too! I am a gracious host and I enjoy meeting new people. I am however not overly chatty, so I will give you your space; as I enjoy mine. Unfortunately, if I am on a tv shoot I tend to work very long hours and so you will hardly see me. I do however have my house maid who lives with me and she will be the one to welcome you, make sure you are comfortable and make your breakfasts. I like to read, I am not big on tv, we do not even have one in the house. I love music, long walks, gardens and nature and a good glass of wine :-) I believe, life is what you make it. It is a choice.
