This little flat at the top of the historic city in Montpellier is perfect for one person or a couple. Jerome greeted us, ensured that everything was working properly, and was nice enough to bring us some bread, coffee and orange juice.
The location is terrific: A five-minute walk to Comédie and the streetcar, and restaurants and shopping abound. If you're ever lost, just remember that you're basically at the top of the hill. However, the slope is gradual enough that it's never a physically exerting effort to get to and from the flat, and it's a five-minute walk from most places in the historic center. That said, a map or smartphone with GPS is REALLY handy because the streets are not on a grid.
The flat makes great use of a small space, and we found everything we needed. The kitchen is well outfitted for occasional use such as morning coffee or breakfast and features a small induction stovetop. The bed is quite comfortable, and the futon is great for watching the generously-sized flat-screen TV. There is adequate storage for both folded and hanging clothes. The wireless connection is great. Lighting and ambiance is terrific, including a wonderful remote-controlled Philips LED mood light.
The bathroom is small but fully functional with a very usable sink, toilet and shower with plenty of hot water. A bar of soap and small shampoo bottle were supplied, along with one towel for each person. Don't expect tremendous water pressure in the shower, but indeed it's perfectly adequate for daily use. One note: The bathroom is not private; there is only a curtain that separates it from the rest of the flat.
The heating/cooling system is electric, remote-controlled, and it hangs on the wall near the ceiling; it works beautifully and can be set to maintain a particular temperature day or night. It also has a night setting so the fan doesn't disturb more sensitive sleepers.
The view from the several windows is picturesque if not breathtaking, but it's definitely interesting, and there is plenty of light. Two of the three windows are new and nicely crafted with the ability to open either for venting or like a hinged door. The place is very quiet at night.
I found Jerome's flat to be absolutely perfect for our stay of four days, and I would happily rent it again the next time I'm in Montpellier. I found the flat to be a very good value for the money.
One note to those with mobility issues: The flat is near the top floor of a five-story building, and there is only a small, tight circular stairway to access it. Those with heavy, bulky luggage or hip issues might find that access is more work.
