Less than two hours from San Francisco on the Russian River (but a world away!) -- near vineyards, redwoods, and the Sonoma coast. This cottage sits on a quarter acre of sunny riverfront property in a quiet neighborhood just west of Monte Rio.
The house offers two comfortable bedrooms. The smaller one has a double bed, bamboo floors, French doors that open directly onto the deck, and gorgeous views of the sunrise over the river and redwood hills. The larger has a queen bed and carpeted floors.
The open kitchen is equipped with a gas range, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, and all essential implements (down to the candy thermometer!). Cook up a storm with fantastic local ingredients -- I can offer recommendations on great places to pick up meat, produce, and seafood.
Just so you don't have to worry about it, I provide olive oil, salt, pepper, and a few other essentials. There's also an herb garden just outside the back door.
There is a large, sunny dining and sitting area just off the kitchen. It's the perfect spot to lounge, enjoy a glass of wine, and admire the views of the river and hills. The living room has a wood burning stove to keep things cozy on winter evenings.
The large back deck offers plenty of room for lounging in the sun and watching the river flow by. The hot tub is perched on the edge of the deck with great river views. It is wonderful for stargazing at night and birdwatching in the morning.
The house has flower gardens with seasonal roses, lilies, daffodils, fuchsia, irises, hydrangeas, rhododendrons, and California poppies, to name a few.
I've only owned the house since the start of 2013 and have been working to constantly improve it. If you're looking for an impeccably posh experience, this might not be the place for you. But if you can handle a few (mostly charming) imperfections in a very functional and fun house, then it will be a great fit. I welcome any feedback you have on what I can do to polish this diamond in the rough, and hope you can come back to watch it evolve.

I like to learn a little bit about my guests, so definitely introduce yourself. I'm always happy to answer any questions and do everything I can to ensure you have a fantastic stay.
I will not be at the property while you stay, but am accessible by phone and email if anything comes up. Other guests have provided excellent feedback on ways to make the house even better, and I welcome yours as well.
The neighborhood is unique for the area: quiet, sunny, and removed from the traffic of River Road. Its signature feature is the tall Lombardy poplars lining the streets. You'll notice a profusion of birds of all kinds at this intersection of the redwood hills, meadows, river, and ocean. Hummingbirds abound in the garden. There's an easy 30-minute stroll through the neighborhood to the community garden, old-growth redwood "ghost tree", and path down to Austin Creek at the end. It's possible to walk all the way to Duncan's Mills (about 2 miles) or on the back road toward Cazadero.
It's about a 10-minute walk to the bus stop, but in reality you'll probably need your own car to get around. On the other hand, it is pretty easy to spend days at a time without going beyond the house, deck, and hot tub!
Other Things to Note
Please note that that weekend bookings require a three-night minimum, and holiday weekends have a minimum based on the length of the holiday (i.e. three-day weekends have a four-night minimum). Exceptions can be made for last-minute bookings.
I allow a maximum of four guests, although in certain circumstances I approve up to two extra people with an additional charge of $25 / person / night.
The house has a fully stocked game shelf at your disposal: Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Cards Against Humanity, cribbage board, playing cards, Connect Four, and a jigsaw puzzle.
***Note that weekend bookings from Memorial Day through Labor Day require a three-night minimum (or four nights on holiday weekends).***
I will provide detailed information a few days prior to your stay. Please review the information thoroughly and be prepared to complete the check-out checklist upon departure (but it's not that hard -- doing dishes, stripping sheets, turning down the hot tub). Let me know in advance if you have any questions.
Treat the house as if it was your own. If you break something, let me know.
Respect the neighbors -- this is a peaceful residential neighborhood. Noise carries on the river so be conscious of your volume. Quiet hours are 10pm - 9am. No amplified sound / music outside the house, please.
Maximum daytime occupancy is 12 persons; overnight limit is 4 persons, unless otherwise agreed to with the host up to a maximum of 6.
Park only in the driveway or on the gravel directly in front of the house; do not park on the other side of the street.
Cover the hot tub when you're not using it. Rinse in the outdoor shower before soaking, particularly if you have first been swimming in the river. Please turn it down or off as instructed when checking out.
I keep my own food, drink, and household items in the house and do not lock them away. Please do not use or consume these unless otherwise instructed.
The house is on a septic system. Flush the toilet only as much as necessary, and don't put anything in it except for toilet paper and things you have first eaten. Scrape plates into the garbage before washing or using the dishwasher.
Be careful on the steps down to the river. No diving from the dock -- the river is very shallow. Swim at your own risk.
Liability: Renting this property includes paying a $500 deposit. The deposit is not refunded in the event of any damage and any violations of these rules or in any way violating this agreement. Some examples of violations would include violating quiet hours, exceeding occupancy limits, and violating any other rule specified. The property owners are in no way responsible or liable for any injury, lost properties, damages, theft, or "acts of God" and shall in no way be construed to have any financial or legal obligations to our guests. All guests have an express obligation to pay the property owners for damages or losses for any property caused by guests or invitees. Guests agree to indemnify and hold harmless the property owners from any loss, damage or personal injury suffered by Tenants and guests or invitees in relation to the rental of the vacation unit, including, but not limited to, power outages, weather conditions, flood, fire, theft, negligence, equipment failure. Tenant and guests shall immediately inform owner upon learning of any unsafe or hazardous condition. Requesting and being accepted to rent this property means you agree to all house rules including this liability statement.
Other Rules. No early arrivals or late departures unless agreed to with the host. No smoking. Commercial use is forbidden. Tenant agrees to leave premises as instructed. Accepting a booking with the property owners is construed as agreeing to each of these terms, and is construed as having read these terms.
All rates have been adjusted to include the 9% Sonoma County Transient Occupancy Tax. Certificate No. 1138N
From Aug 2 - Oct 31, 2015 the minimum stay is 3 nights.
