About this listing
Our gorgeous old lakefront "cottage" was built in the early 1900s; sleeps 10-12 comfortably. It has 900 feet of private waterfront with a dock and a canoe waiting for you and a spring-fed Kettle pond to swim in. Enjoy a stay near beaches, Newport.
This site is for a rental property in Southern Rhode Island on the coast, in Matunuck, which is near the towns of Wakefield and Narragansett. The house was built in the early 1900s in the 'shingle style' popularized by the firm McKim, Mead, and White. It sleeps 10-12 people and has 4 bedrooms on the second floor and one open-concept studio with private bath on the 3rd floor. 3 bathrooms, laundry room, beautiful living room with fieldstone fireplace, dining room, wainscotting for all walls, kitchen, sun porch/tv room, outdoor slate patio and grill, wrap-around porch and large yard, private dock with waterfront, canoe and rowboat. There is a small private boathouse that has no bath, but has electricity and sleeps 2 with a small balcony that is right on the water. The rental comes with a town beach pass, and is also near the gorgeous Ninigret State Park and Reserve (we have access to a less crowded entrance), tennis courts nearby (for tennis aficionados, the Newport Tennis Hall of Fame is a 30 minute drive), wonderful yoga studio in Wakefield, etc. Great location for Block Island Ferry, fishing villages to get fresh fish, hiking around Trustom Pond Nat'l Wildlife Refuge, surfing in Narragansett, etc.
Rental will include house cleaning services and has plenty of parking for a larger group. Basic kitchen supplies and condiments are included as well, along with all linens, towels, beach towels and chairs, along with lunch cooler, etc. It is a gorgeous spot! We just put in a beautiful outdoor shower which is nice after a day at the beach.
Private lakefront and dock, quaint boathouse that has electricity and sleeps 2; parking for 8 cars, hiking trails nearby, beautiful Ninigret beach or the Matunuck beaches. I also offer a complimentary beach pass for our private town beach club that is just at the end of the Matunuck Beach Road!
Interaction with Guests
I live in Vermont, but I have a caretaker named Emily who is wonderful, and she can also shop for guests if they want to splurge and have food waiting for them. (Let me know!) I am always available by phone! My mother and sister live in the area, too, so I have lots of people to help should our guests need us!
Our neighborhood is all old families, some from generations of Matunuck families—my own goes back five generations now. We are close to Route 1, but when you are at the house, on the terrace, the noise fades. I always tell people you can hear the cars, so they don't expect complete silence! Everyone is super friendly in our little enclave!
We have two parking areas for cars. The Wakefield Taxi company is great, and Steadman's Bicycle Shop rents bikes in Wakefield. The Amtrak from NYC/Boston is only about a 15-20 minute drive. Some guests take the train, then a taxi and just hang out at the house, using a taxi now and then. We had a libretto written at our house last year, and they just stayed put :) Our caretaker, Emily, can do shopping, too.
Other Things to Note
SInce we have a private dock, I always tell people to use life jackets and swim at their own risk. There are lifeguards at the public beaches down there, so that is good. The pond is so deep—no one really knows! You can paddle to the end of Big Wash, then cut through some trees and enter Little Wash, which is magical. There are 7 ponds back in the woods above our house, with hiking trails… Of course, beware of ticks! A shower a(in our new outdoor shower!) fter hiking should get rid of them, and we have DEET repellent, but someone said natural Chrysanthemums works well. Oh, it is an old house… with lots of charm.
Please treat this old house like it is yours. Leave it pretty much like you found it (shut the windows, lock doors, put all keys back and beach pass). Clean up after your pets! No smoking. We are trying to cut down on trash and make our own compost in a container on the property that is located in the bushes down toward the, dock), so there is a compost pail in the kitchen for veggie scraps, egg shells, coffee grounds (no red meat, chicken, fish, cheese, dairy, bread allowed) ... And we also recycle all plastic, aluminum, etc., so we appreciate our guests who help us out! We have some shopping bags to take to,the market, too ;-) Other than that, just respect the property and sign our guest book!
Writer, book designer, mother ... My son lives in Barcelona, and he uses Airbnb a lot.... seems like a great site! We live in Vermont in a house built by my husband... It is quiet and rural. I love to hike, run, walk, x-c ski and read. We are semi-off the grid, which is cool and I commute mostly by bicycle. Interested in travel with our 3 grown children.
