Our gorgeous old lakefront "cottage" was built in the early 1900s; sleeps 10-12 comfortably. It has 800 feet of private waterfront with a dock and a canoe waiting for you and a spring-fed Kettle pond to swim in. Enjoy a stay near beaches, Newport.
View of our 875 feet of private waterfront... To the left is a cozy boathouse, completely redone, that sleeps 2, with a balcony over the water.
This site is for a rental property in Southern Rhode Island on the coast, in Matunuck, which is near the towns of Wakefield and Narragansett. The house was built in the early 1900s in the 'shingle style' popularized by the firm McKim, Mead, and White. It sleeps 12 people and has 4 bedrooms and one open-concept studio with private bath on the 3rd floor. 3 bathrooms, laundry room, beautiful living room with fieldstone fireplace, dining room, wainscotting for all walls, kitchen, sun porch/tv room, outdoor slate patio and grill, wrap-around porch and large yard, private dock with waterfront, canoe and rowboat. There is a small private boathouse that has no bath, but has electricity and sleeps 2 with a small balcony that is right on the water. The rental comes with possible private beach weekly membership through family, but is near the gorgeous Ninigret State Park and Reserve (we have access to a less crowded entrance), tennis club with clay courts nearby, wonderful yoga studio in Wakefield, etc. Great location for Block Island Ferry, fishing villages to get fresh fish, hiking around Trustom Pond Nat'l Wildlife Refuge, surfing in Narragansett, etc. Rental will include house cleaning services and has plenty of parking for a larger group. Basic kitchen supplies and condiments are included as well, along with all linens, towels, beach towels and chairs, along with lunch cooler, etc. It is a gorgeous spot! We just put in a beautiful outdoor shower which is nice after a day at the beach.
Private lakefront and dock, quaint boathouse that has electricity and sleeps 2; parking for 8 cars, hiking trails nearby, beautiful Ninigret beach or the Matunuck beaches.
Interaction with Guests
I live in Vermont, but I have a caretaker named Emily who is wonderful, and she can also shop for guests if the want to splurge and have food waiting for them. I am always available by phone! My mother and sister live in the area, too, so I have lots of people to help should our guest need us!
Our neighborhood is all old families, some from generations of Matunuck families—my own goes back five generations now. We are close to Route 1, but when you are at the house, on the terrace, the noise fades. I always tell people you can hear the cars, so they don't expect complete silence! Everyone is super friendly in our little enclave!
We have two parking areas for cars. The Wakefield Taxi company is great, and Steadman's Bicycle Shop rents bikes in Wakefield. The Amtrak from NYC/Boston is only about a 15-20 minute drive. Some guests take the train, then a taxi and just hang out at the house, using a taxi now and then. We had a libretto written at our house last year, and they just stayed put :) Our caretaker, Emily, can do shopping, too.
Other Things to Note
SInce we have a private dock, I always tell people to use life jackets and swim at their own risk. There are lifeguards at the public beaches down there, so that is good. The pond is so deep—no one really knows! You can paddle to the end of Big Wash, then cut through some trees and enter Little Wash, which is magical. There are 7 ponds back in the woods above our house, with hiking trails… Of course, beware of ticks! A shower after hiking should get rid of them, and we have DEET repellent, but someone said natural Chrysanthemums works well. Oh, it is an old house… with lots of charm.
Clean up after pets! No smoking.
Great house and great location. Dede was very communicative before, during, and after our stay. We would gladly stay here again.
This was our second time staying at Dede's pond house and we had an equally amazing time as our first experience. Dede is a fantastic host that truly cares about her guests. She provides a ton of information about the property and the surrounding area and she makes herself very available for any questions/concerns. All in all I would highly highly recommend staying at Dede's house. I'm sure we'll be back for a third time at some point in the future!
The Pond House was a delightful place to spend a reunion weekend with friends. The area is beautiful, with hiking and the beach close by. The house is inviting and very comfortable, with plenty of space for a large group. The only issue we had was with the fireplace - even with the flue open, the house became pretty smoky when we had a fire going. But a great vacation rental overall.
The Pond House was more than we could have asked for on our wedding weekend. It sleeps 10 adults comfortably and was very spacious. We spent most of our time by the fire at night and on the dock and swimming during the day. We will absolutely rent this home again.
This is a great vacation house. It has the best of both worlds - fresh water pond AND very close to the ocean! (We have 2 factions in our family and were able to satisfy both). The house has 5 bedrooms, and comfortable beds, so everyone was happy with the accommodations. We only have a family of 5 so we are thinking of bringing another family along - there's so much room! The gardens/landscaping is really lovely and quite bucolic. The only negative is the background noise of Rte 1. A constant hum. Also, the beaches are on the other side of Rte 1 so getting there by bike, or taking a run to the beach means crossing a fairly major highway. If you can get beyond that, the location is fabulous. It took us slightly over 2 hours on Saturday to reach the house from Boston. My son took the train from DC to Kingston and it is just 15 minutes from the train station - quick and easy! We went to South Kingstown Beach, Moonstone Beach, and Narragansett Beach. Narragansett is worth going to at least once, but including parking it cost us $55 (5 adults). Still, it does have THE BEST bodysurfing. We got to Moonstone around 10am and had it all to ourselves until about 11:30. On a Sunday. We drove the car down, dropped off people & stuff, then one person went back to the house and returned by bicycle. There is, essentially, no parking there. Worked out really well. You could do the same at South Kingstown, or East Matunuck beaches. Quick bike to the house. (But you have to cross the highway). Dede the homeowner was very communicative and easy to deal with. She was eager for us to enjoy the house as much as she does. Also, the house comes with linens and beds were all made and ready for our arrival. There were even fresh flowers on the dining room table and the patio table. Very nice touch! There is an outdoor shower which was really nice. And the house has a washer & dryer which came in handy too.
Fabulous house!!! We have been renting in the area for many summers and this is our favorite. The house is exactly as described - lots of room and cool art on the walls throughout, beautiful landscaping, and a kitchen that is much better stocked than most. The gorgeous pond is the highlight (who needs the beach?). Dede was very responsive and always available by email or phone. She is a great host and we hope to stay here again.
The house was quaint, roomy and comfortable and clean, with room for a family group with different needs. The grounds were impeccably maintained and there were plenty of cozy spaces inside and out to sit and read. We enjoyed the patio in the afternoons for gathering the family (and beverages). And our 20-something kids used the lawn for lawn games.
Dede was in communication and responsive to any issues we had and resolved them with concern and haste. She was a very pleasant hostess. The town beach was great and you have to visit Carpenters, the local farm stand on the beach road, with local produce and poultry meat, milk, bakery goods. Worth the trip!
The location was convenient to both Newport and Watch Hill, less than a half hour drive in opposite directions. We had a great week!
Writer, book designer, mother ... My son lives in Barcelona, and he uses Airbnb a lot.... seems like a great site! We live in Vermont in a house built by my husband... It is quiet and rural. I love to hike, run, walk, x-c ski and read. We are semi-off the grid, which is cool and I commute mostly by bicycle. Interested in travel with our 3 grown children.
