I enjoy designing this apartment as though it is one of my art pieces, many of my guests contributed their ideas to how it could be designed. I hope you will treat this apartment just like your own and take good care of the cleanliness and amenities.
Laura was a fantastic and welcoming host, the best we've had through Airbnb. Not only did she come to personally pick us up when we arrived at Beijing airport, she even arranged a friend of hers to come along and translate for us. During our stay, she contacted us regularly to make sure everything was ok. On the last night, Laura and her husband took us out to a delicious restaurant where were got to sample some Beijing delicacies, including duck.
Her apartment was warm and cosy, our home away from home. It's ideally situated in the Gulou (Drum Tower) district, which from our travels was certainly one of the better places to be situated. There are ample Hutongs to wander through and just minutes down the road are some great local places for breakfast (the Baozi and egg soup are great as were the Ro bin (meat pancakes). It's also only 5 minutes walk to a convenient subway - which is a short 20 minute ride to the Forbidden City. A wonderful spot.
But by far the highlight was Laura - she is a wonderful host who we look forward to meeting again, either in Beijing or here in Melbourne!
Laura is a great host. She treats you like a house-guest, not just a tenant. When I arrived she had stocked the refrigerator with milk, eggs, bread and fruit, and she also made available a full supply of kitchen basics. The apartment is not new, but it is clean and full of amenities. Location is good. While the alley itself is not particularly interesting, it is only 10 minutes away from some very historic areas of old Beijing. Good value.
This spring and summer, my husband and I spent four months in Laura’s apartment and had an exquisite time. As sinologists we come to Beijing a lot and the apartment is by far the nicest we have seen in Beijing so far. The apartment is newly renovated, spacious and very cozy with much love spent on the interior design. Kitchen and bathroom are very nice and definitely Western standard. Located on the fourth (Chinese) floor of a traditional apartment building in the middle of a beautiful and lively old Hutong area, the apartment is full of light with a very nice view over the Hutongs – if the weather is clear one can even see the West mountains in the distance. The neighborhood is very friendly and extremely quiet for Beijing.
The location is wonderful. The Hutongs around offer everything one needs – from a large vegetable and fruit market just across Second Ring Road, to small kiosks, restaurants, barbers and a small blind massage center. When cutting through the Hutongs one can reach the quieter part of Houhai Lake in just about 15 minutes, very nice for spending summer evenings at the lake. Western products such as sugar-free yoghurt, milk, bread and coffe are available at “Gerard’s” in the Hutongs across Jiugulou Dajie – walk towards the Lama Temple for about 15-20 minutes and the small store is on the left-hand side (a little hard to find though). There is also one of Beijing’s nicest nightlife areas with lots of cafes and restaurants on Jiugulou Dajie and Gulou Dongdajie just around the corner towards the Drum Tower. The traffic connection is great with Subway Line 2 and 8 (Gulou Dajie) outside the Hutong and lots of buses in all directions. Second Ring Road just to the North also makes getting around by taxi very comfortable.
Last but not least, Laura and her husband are absolutely wonderful and we became good friends with them during our stay. It was like having a family in Beijing. They have a great sense of humor and we had an amazing time with them going to concerts, plays, the Great Wall and over interesting dinner conversations. Laura always made sure we felt at home at the apartment and helped us with everything she could from Chinese bureaucracy to getting to the airport with our luggage. We hope they come to visit in Germany soon.
