Having spent some time in the centre of launceston and then Cradle mountain we spent two nights in the lovely wine making Tamar Valley, apart from the picturesque scenery our visit was made even better by the beautiful apartment of Karin and Frank who were so helpful and friendly we wish we could stay a week there! The studio apartment is very very new, clean and modern, there is no kitchen, but there is a toaster, a fridge, we chose to get some takeaway and enjoyed more than one alfresco meals facing the river. Fantastic. On our last night there we had a nice conversation with Karin and Frank, they gave us lots of local knowledge and stories, not to mention the most delicious pure apple juice and fresh hazelnuts we have ever tasted. Also, just before we left the place their adorable dog Elmo gave us a warm farewell as well. We'd highly recommend their place to other airbnb users. You won't regret.
Karin and Frank made us very welcome when we arrived. The studio was immaculate and tastefully furnished. A nice touch sampling their apples and hazelnuts from their own trees. The view from the studio was beautiful. We enjoyed being welcomed from a day out by Sisi the cat and Elmo the dog.
Karin & Frank were perfect hosts before & during our stay - responsive, informative & welcoming and helpful. The unit is as described with magical views and quality attention to detail fit out and supplies; with additional cooking facilities if required - Karin provided with us rice cooker and electric hotplates without a problem.
It was so easy to use this unit as a base to explore Launceston and the Tamar River Valley which we did, but as most locations are close in Tasmania, you could also explore other areas, like Cradle Mountain and the north and east - Frank & Karin know Tassie very well and can give you advice. We felt very comfortable here and enjoyed being showed around their magnificent property, picking fruit and nuts from the trees and playing with the very obedient dog Elmo!
Karin and Frank were the perfect hosts. This was our first Airbnb experience and it was perfect.
Thank you Karin and Frank - a great weekend in a gorgeous part of the world . My first experience with airbnb and couldn't have been better. Initial and subsequent communication was prompt and friendly. The apartment fabulous, stunning views and equipped with all essentials even down to choice of hair dryer/ curling tongs / hair straighteners !!!!! Also thank you for breakfast - a very generous selection of fresh food and the freshly squeezed homegrown apple juice was a high light. Best wishes to you both , Deb.
Karin: 1987 my family and I moved from Germany to this beautiful spot in the Tamar Valley and lived here ever since.
I like travelling which I have done extensively throughout Europe, USA, Scandinavia, Africa and Australia.
Nowadays I lead a busy life working as an Accounts Officer 4/7 and on my days off I enjoy spending time with my two granddaughters and socializing with family and friends.
The hobbies I enjoy are gardening, dancing, bushwalking, photography, Pilates, patchwork & quilting, and when time allows I love cooking my own bread & delicious cakes, also preserving our own fruit and vegetables.
Frank: It is now about 30 years when I first visited Tasmania to explore the Island and the potential opportunities to become part of the Community.
I was simply stunned by the vista from the Brady's Lookout Reserve now just up the hill from us. Little did I know that about 2 and a half years later would be move into our new home with plenty of land to grow things and provide the lifestyle with pets and farm animals that our then little children would have to look after.
What a life!
We planted fruit trees as soon as the season allowed us to. Now we have a great mix of stone-fruits such as Cherries, Apricots, Peaches, Plumes, Prunes; then the pip-fruits such as various apples and pears.
The Vegetable Garden is providing many good things apart from the greens, asparagus, also soft fruits such as Raspberries and Strawberries during December and Currants in January.
I have also established a Hazelnut Orchard more than 20 years that now covers nearly one third of the property and the nuts are ready for harvest from about late February.
No chemical spray is used here and no artificial fertilisers.
For the last 7 years I am involved research, production and use of Biochar,
Bio = Greek for life. Using char-(coal) to foster life in soil and water.
I am very active in establishing the understanding of the potential of Biochar in healthy soil development, horticulture, aquaculture and farming. There are very interesting opportunities to be explored with anyone interested in caring for the land, soil health, carbon sequestration and renewable energy from what is still considered organic 'waste', also called 'unloved biomass'.
My professional background is in ecological forest management and training of responsible forest management principles.
My passion is in local community action for a better Tasmania, for short, medium and long term, inter-generational benefit. I am linked up with many organisations that care for the environment and the people across the Island, the Country and other continents.
My love is for Karin, my dear wife of 34 years and the whole family, our children and grandchildren - that keeps me going. Tasmania is home for us.
Since we have opened the apartment I have had the pleasure to meet some fascinating people from around the Country and the World.
Ond mir schwätzed au schwäbisch!
