Fantastic location, two blocks off St Charles Ave, where the streetcar runs every 15 minutes to the French Quarter/Business district in one direction and Tulane/Loyola, Audobon Park in the other.

The Garden District, with the most amazing collection of victorian architecture you will ever see, is only 3 blocks kitty corner from the house. (It starts at Louisiana and St Charles Ave.)

Within a few blocks of the house are excellent restaurants, including the Superior Grill, the Delachaise (French bistro with outdoor seating,) August Moon (Chinese,) Aline St Beergarden (new in Jan 13,) Sovrein Pub (British style) The Columns Hotel (live music and Jazz Brunch,) Coulis (on many "best breakfast" lists, the Prytania Bar and Italian Pie and many small deli's and fast food. Rite-Aid, Blockbuster and Rouse's supermarket. Newly opened Fresh Market at Louisiana and St Charles is only 5 blocks away and has a great deli, fresh fruit, homeade Gelato, bakery (see photos) salad and seafood bar. It is much like whole foods. Also walking distance (7blocks) is excellent shopping it the very best section of Magazine Street. There you will find the Bull Dog Tavern with an outdoor seating area and dozens of beers on tap, Dat Dawg; Reginelli's, Big Fisherman, Babylon, Mona's Middle Eastern, The Balcony Bar, The Rum House and Salu (carribean food,) Slim Goody's (vintage diner gourmet style,) and many many more options.

You could literally walk to a different restaurant every night for a month without ever repeating in this neighborhood. And if we threw public transport into it, you could go on forever, since there are constantly new restaurants opening all over the city. It is foodie heaven here.

Front and back yard are fully fenced with 8 foot pine in the rear and 6 foot iron in the front.

Bike rental is available for $20 for 24 hours from an outside company. That includes lock, helmet, bike and free delivery and pick up. Such a beautiful city to bike. Cruise over to Magazine Street, ride through the Garden District, hit the quarter like a local, ride along the riverfront, or to Citi Park or Audobon Park

Guests have access to everything in the house.

I do a walk-through at check-in and check out. Other interaction is minimal, but I am always available by phone, text and email for questions. I am not present during the guest's stay.

The Neighborhood

The Milan neighborhood is comprised of beautiful old houses and mansions. No two are alike, and they are roughly 100-150 years old. It is a great neighborhood for architecture enthusiasts and photographers. The St Charles Streetcar, which is just two blocks from the house, takes you directly to the French Quarter for only $1.25. It is a beautiful way to travel. The antique cars feature varnished wood seats and brass, and they move at a slow pace, allowing you to take photos of the amazing mansions that line both sides of the tracks. Another great thing about the neighborhood is the fantastic walkability. You will not need a car, as the Fresh Market Grocery has everything a vacationer needs to stock the fridge. There is also a deli that makes (email hidden), an olive bar, cooked seafood bar, bakery, gelato, gourmet coffee for $1 per cup, and (email hidden) upstairs. Across the street from that is a Rite-aid drugstore which sells beer, wine and liquor, in addition to all the normal pharmacy items.

  • Good area, close enough to trolley line. But the house was too small and a little shabbier than we would have liked. We had a total of 13 people stay there and this was a little tight for us. We basically used it for a crash pad, so that works, but if you're looking for luxury or semi fancy this is not the place for you. Previous comments noted that the landlord is around a lot and this is true, however this didn't bother me, because she is a nice person, however if you're looking for privacy you may want to reconsider booking here. If you're looking for a crash pad, I think 5-6 people max could do this place comfortably. Great city, nice landlord, but the house could use a bit of TLC.

    Response from Joanne:

Hi Leslie. I have never used luxury or semi-fancy to describe the cottage. It is a great location with high-quality comfortable beds, nice TVs and a great kitchen. Bachelor/bachelorette parties and other large groups are normally looking for comfort, convenience and price, not luxury. My listing description is very accurate.

  • I stayed at Joanne's with students and a colleague on a recent food and music trip through the South. She was a pleasure to deal with both before our trip and when we arrived, providing excellent advice on places to go and warm hospitality. Our favorite recommendation of hers was the wonderful beignet shop right around the corner from the house. By the time we left New Orleans our rental car was covered in powdered sugar.

The house was very comfortable and the air conditioning kept us nice and cool. The back deck (email hidden) to relax in the morning with tall trees overhead and a nice table and chair set. We will definitely stay with Joanne next year when we make this trip again.

That is a good sign when you leave covered in powdered sugar!. Glad you had a great trip and I am happy to hear that you will be staying with me next year! It was a pleasure to have you.

  • I rented this house for my bachelorette party. It was perfect! Lots of room and beds for a large group, convenient location and Joanne was more than helpful with great tips for things to do around town. Neighborhood was really cute and overall had a great experience. Would definitly rent from her again.

  • Joanne (email hidden) for our group. From the planning stages to staying at the house, it all went off perfectly for us. The neighborhood was (email hidden)e Garden District and nearby Magazine St. has plenty of attractions to keep you entertained for days.

Joanne's house was exactly as advertised. It's very nicely designed and very clean. Joanne was also very helpful in providing information about restaurants in the area. I would highly recommend Joanne and her house!

    Thank you, Joanne!

    Response from Joanne:

Thank you Casey! Glad you liked the house and the location. I do feel lucky to be able to walk to so many amazing things here. And for big groups like yours, it is cool to be able to walk or take the streetcar rather than take multiple cars or cabs. I can give you a whole different list of things to see next time, when you are not in bachelor party mode.

  • Had a fantastic time staying at Joanne's place. I rented her house with several girlfriends to celebrate my birthday--perfect place for a big group. Really great location within walking distance to many shops and restaurants on Magazine street. Joanne was very helpful in making sure we could find our way around and suggested lots of great places to check out based on activities we were interested in. She was also extremely responsive whenever we had questions. Would absolutely recommend staying here.

  • We had a group of guys that stayed here during the Jazz fest in April. We had a great time... everything was just as described. Joanne (email hidden) - available and helpful if we wanted something, but invisible otherwise. She was a wealth of local knowledge and gave us lots of good ideas of restaurants and attractions.
Our long week-end turned out just as we had hoped.

    Response from Joanne:

Really happy that everything worked out well for you and that the weather cooperated to let you play a few golf courses in addition to Jazzfest. You were a fun group and it was a pleasure to have you.

  • Can't praise Joanne and her delightful house highly enough.
It's a great location, just two blocks to St Charles Avenue street-car, which runs Downtown to Canal St for French Quarter, Marigny and the Bywater, and in the other direction goes to Audubon Park and the zoo. A further two blocks south of St Charles is Magazine Street, six miles of great shopping, bars and restaurants.
The house is ideal - we were three guys on a music-and-beverage related trip - but would comfortably accommodate a larger group, with nice kitchen and bathroom, four good-sized bedrooms and a sitting room with flat-screen TV, plus two outdoor seating areas, the front porch or in the back yard.
The kitchen is really well-equipped with pots, pans, crockery etc, but I must admit we mostly used the coffee maker and ice-box, as we ate out most days/evenings.
Joanne is lovely, very knowledgeable about NOLA, and super helpful - we were somewhat the worse for wear after a heavy night in Memphis and an 8-hour train ride and she made us delicious red beans and rice, which got us back on our feet . . .
Highly recommended, can't wait to go back . . .

Thank you Michael for all of the kind words. I try very hard to make everyone comfortable and nothing makes me happier than when people have a wonderful time here. You and your friends were a pleasure to host and I hope you do come back very soon!

  • 15 of us went to New Orleans for a bachelor party and stayed at Joannes cottage. She was an awesome host who always chatted with us and made a ton of great recommendations. The house was great and I dont think we could have (email hidden) to stay with that many people. It was quiet and clean and the central air was fantastic. She provided so much more than I had expected! More than enough towels, blankets, a washer and dryer, tons of dishes and a dishwasher. We comfortably slept on the 10+ beds provided and even made dinner two nights after she pointed us to an amazing market just a few blocks away. I very much recommend this location as there are plenty of restaurants and shops within blocks, its quiet and on the edge of a beautiful neighborhood and a few short blocks from the street car that will get you downtown along a very cool route!

Thanks for the nice review. You guys were great. I am still laughing about what you did to the guest of honor. Nobody will ever forget that weekend!! Hope to see you again soon.

  • My girlfriends and I stayed here for a bachelorette party. There were 10 of us total, and we all fit very comfortably in Joanne's house. The house itself is very quaint and nicely furnished. As other reviews say, it is only 2 blocks from the street car line, so getting to the French Quarter isn't bad. Also, a cab ride from the Quarter was only about $10 - $15. We didn't get a chance to explore the neighborhood or Garden District too much, but from what we did see it was adorable.

Joanne is great! Very communicative and flexible. She offered great advice on local places to get food and drinks. This (email hidden) to stay, and I would recommend it to others.

About
I have owned this beautiful home in New Orleans for the last eight years and have enjoyed renovating it from top to bottom. I really think this is the best location in New Orleans for atmosphere, convenience, and proximity to the best transportation anywhere, the St Charles Streetcar. Only two blocks from the house is the historic St Charles Streetcar line, which goes from the French Quarter, Superdome and Central Business districts, all the way to the Univesities of Tulane and Loyola at the other end. The house is situated half way up the line, near Louisiana Ave, and in either direction you will travel under 100 year old oak trees and pass by countless victorian mansions. Oh, and about me, LOVE to travel. I have been all over Europe, including Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Italy Netherlands, and Belgium. I have been to every state in the US, other than Alaska. I have also spent time in Venezuela and I spend at least a week in Mexico every year. I have an MBA in international finance and I have been in the banking business for over twenty years. I love meeting new people and showing them around the city. I can suggest great nightlife and restaurants of all kinds.
