Wonderful experience! Amazing the wild nature: through the house and the excursions, you get it in the perfect way. Silence and light candles during the night contribute to create authentic experience. It is not touristic trap, difficult in some point of the trip, but honestly it is how discover the Amazon forest.
The guide and all the hosts have been very nice.
Thank you guys, best part of my trip.
Sadly, I had booked this place back in December 2014 before Brittany's review. a friend and I had an eerily similar experience. It was a total nightmare. Yet all the reviews and email correspondence prior made it seem amazing. It all started as an innocent attempt to just book a cool looking place to sleep near Iquitos via airbnb. We understand there's a market out there for the activities that come along with booking this place, but if you're just looking for lodging, keep looking. This isn't the place. It shouldn't be advertised on airbnb. WHAT YOU MUST KNOW PRIOR TO BOOKING: 1.read their website. It differs from airbnb description drastically. Good luck staying there without purchasing one of their tour packages. They don't make it seem mandatory but there is no way possible you would get there with the one hour local van ride, plus a one hour hike down a jungle path you'd never find without the guide. Also, you're in the middle of nowhere so how are you gonna eat without the cook that comes with the package and how are you gonna entertain yourself alone in the jungle w/o electricity? I emailed the managers about out grievances as well but they said they would've gotten us out there with a guide but I didn't clarify if that was for an additional cost to what was charged for lodging. 2. At the tail end of your stay, the hike from the lodge to the boat tour portion is THREE HOURS (and that's if you traveled lightly) and you're wearing rainboots with your feet getting stuck in marshes, etc. it. Was. Rough. You better be in GOOD SHAPE if you're still interested in this place. I'm in the military. I had flashbacks to basic training and I can't believe I PAID for this when I'm on vacation to get away from this. 3. KNOWING SPANISH IS A MUST. Our tour guide spoke an English word here and there. But you won't get by without Spanish. You just won't. 4. You aren't going to see cool animals, or see anything a typical tourist would want to see paying to fly all the way to Iquitos if you solely bank on this place. We saw someone's pet monkey on a leash, a blue butterfly, a mini frog, and a tarantula. We also purchased the 3day/2night package at 170 US Dollars per person (food and lodging included in the price) This was the anti-vacation. All work, no play. First thing on the itinerary after an hour long jungle hike carrying all of your stuff (and after lunch), was an hour long hike through the jungle. After dinner the only thing offered that day was a nocturnal hike through the jungle. All you will look at are plants and bugs. Cool if you're a botanist or entomologist. But this is not the package for sightseeing. There are no notable animals in the particular area you are staying. Within hours of being there...
La estancia en Allpahuayo Mishana estuvo muy bien. Joni, el guía, es una persona genial, con un buen conocimiento de la selva y un contacto muy fácil.
To put it simply, we didn't get what we paid for.
You will be asked to pay additional service fees once you book, outside of the charges through airbnb in order to experience what this location has to offer. Namely, this is to cover tours, food and transportation.
3 days/2 nights was to include 6 tours and lots of activities and we did 1 tour that entire time and in the case of heavy rain there is little to do at the location outside of cards. Therefore, definitely bring something to do but remember there is no electricity. It was dark by 8pm everynight and we had no choice but to go our room.
Accommodations are an open air room, however mosquito nets are provided, and extremely necessary. The room is on the 2nd floor but somehow a chicken managed to access and lay an egg in our bed leaving it full of fleas as well and each night we woke to bird poo covering the mosquito nets even though we were technically inside. Toilets are organic but clean and comfortable but we were never presented with an option to bathe other than using a nearby river.
Food was cooked in local fashion and tasty at some points but a food allergy to fish had been mentioned ahead of time and was blatantly not address. When we reached the site and asked again we were told it wasn't a problem, there were fried eggs as an alternative...
Travel to and from the site takes about twice as long as advertised and we carried all of our own stuff as well as things for the guide.
The guide, Ney, was not knowledgeable about the area and barely spoke to us at all on our one tour. Apparently, he is an English speaking guide but spoke Spanish the entire time, knowing a word here and there in English. He was friendly at meal times though even if he broached topics that were highly inappropriate and was quick to help if you asked directly.
The agency where this operates out of is located in a not so safe part of Iquitos and additionally no one knows where it is. So make sure to call ahead and arrange meeting at the hospital nearby.
Correspondence from the host prior to the experience was very friendly and quick however when we attempted to air our grievances we were met with hostility and excuses about working with local people.
All the reviews online, painted this as the perfect getaway experience. It was simply a perfect nightmare.
First of all, by this comment we can show that all the other beautiful comments are completely true and authentic.
Second, we have previously received a private email from Brittany, she threatened us to give her the money back or she would have written a negative comment on Airbnb. We did not accept. So: does her aggressive comment come from the frustration of not being satisfied? If we had accepted her request, then she would not have written anything?
We know that sometimes something does not work, and we feel professionally mortified; this is a moment of huge reflection for all of us. This is a touristic project with locals; this is very hard and sometimes frustrating, anyway we still believe in them.
But, we think this should be separated from the objective difficulties that the jungle could create, and the frustration because of it. We ALWAYS WRITE that our experience is AUTHENTIC, NOT TOURISTIC.
Also that there's no electricity, about open space, that the first and last trekking will be bringing our own backpack; and, it is not appropriate saying "You will be asked to pay additional service fees once you book"; we propose entire packs, thinking that it could be an occasion for discovering the Reserve where is our lodge, with excursions and food.
WE DO NOT IMPOSE, WE PROPOSE.
From the first moment Brittany came with suspicion; the hard rain complicated the activities during the pack, and she decided not to do the last trekking the last day, which are the most important (1 to the other community and 2 by boat int the Nanay River). Sincerely, we turned crazy trying to make her feel fine, also bringing her to the zoo last day, which she doesn't mentioned.
Finally, if you want to make suggestions Brittany, we strongly recommend that, for the benefit of not only us but also of this great project that is Airbnb, do it in a non-destructive manner.
We loved our time at the treehouse - the best part were the people who worked with us and our guides. Nee, Pedro & Johnny were so nice & accommodating, the food was awesome, and the bed with mosquito netting was a treat during the rainstorm. For future guests - there is a lot of trekking in and out of the jungle (for three hours) with your bags, so really only bring the lightest of stuff. Also, this is the other side of the jungle so you likely won't see sloths, pink Dolphins, or very much wildlife. But hearing about all the plants from the locals is pretty cool & just being in unadulterated nature was the best experience. If you do the two-day trek, the best part is where they'll take you to a village the second day & you'll get to eat w a local family & swim in the river + take a cool boat ride through the river. We loved our stay!
Our trip to Allpahuayo Mishana was extraordinary. We were accompanied by Pablo, an excellent guide, knowledgeable, friendly, generous with his time and his care. The environment is challenging, not for the fainthearted. A spirit of adventure is necessary, but the "discomfort" is repaid a thousand times by the opportunity to discover the untouched, virgin rainforest that surrounds the house. I recommend the property wholeheartedly to anyone who wishes to touch the heart of the Amazon, experience its flora and fauna close up, and connect with this unique and irreplaceable ecosystem. The fact that our stay also contributed to protecting a swathe of virgin forest was an excellent fringe benefit to our visit!
We are an agency who organizes trips and holidays packages through the Natural Reserve of Allpahuayo Mishana (Amazon forest, Iquitos – Perù) and its communities. We offer different experiences depending on the demands of tourists, from pure adventure to comfortable accommodations, from hard trekking to easier trials, from special sport activities or nocturnal hunting to relaxing on the beaches or along the quebradas. You will enjoy all this while remaining immersed in the natural landscape of the Reserve.
