About this listing

The cottage is best suited for simple travelers, those transitioning to SF, or staying short-term. Our tenants in the separate suite adjoined to the cottage, love welcoming our guests to SF. The backyard makes up an awesome little living community, with benches and seats to socialize in, a plum tree, small succulent planters, and a Guanyin statue near the cottage entrance. We hope your stay in SF will be great and encourage you to discover the hidden treasures that lie in the Bayview district.

The space

The space is in a cozy little cottage behind a San Francisco Victorian House. In the early 1900s it was likely a stable or wood workshop, later converted into a private art studio, and then a small living studio perfect for AirBnB!

The studio is adjoined with a suite (where a couple and their child live) that make up our backyard cottage. It can accommodate up to two people and has basic amenities like a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and two camping stove tops.

We are located in the Bayview district, which is in the industrial part of the city. It is relatively safe, mostly residential, and termed as the "green-house district" for the plant shops and home improvement retailers. One example of our favorite place in the city is Flora Grubb Gardens, a nursery where you can get fresh brewed Ritual coffee. In the neighborhood, you can also play Ball-Toss and socialize over Louisiana style cuisine at All Good Pizza, or enjoy drinks at Speakeasy Brewery.

Boutique shopping is a bus and a hop away on Cortland Ave (6 minutes by bus). You will find nice restaurants, cafes, a public library, ice cream shops, laundromat, grocery market, bike shop, and more! On Saturday mornings, we recommend the Alemany Farmer's Market, which is a 15 minute walk away.

From our place, you will be well connected with public transportation. The 24 and 44 (SF Muni) run their routes a block away. You can also catch the T-train, 8ax, 9/9r, 23, but require a further walk.

The best things to do on a weekend is to bike along 3rd street towards Mission Bay and discover places like Dogpatch, the Embarcadero, and Market Street (downtown). You can also bike further to Fisherman's wharf and Crissy field. The Mission district is easily bike-able and you can use "the wiggle" (a bike route that strategically avoids the most hills) to go to Duboce, Haight st, and the Pandhandle/Golden Gate Park.

For our guests with cars, or who plan to use Uber/Lyft frequently, our location is convenient for parking and you will reach the best parts of town within 10-20 minutes.

Other things to note

Our cottage is heated, however occasionally it is sporadic. We've added

I stayed with Vishnu for about 3 months while on a travel nurse contract. Some positives is that it's obviously fairly cheap compared to a lot of San Francisco and it's also convenient to the city. The neighborhood, while still up and coming, is close enough to places like Bernal Heights that I never felt like I was totally isolated. I was able to take the bus pretty much everywhere. I will say, there were a couple times getting off late at night I felt a little uncomfortable on the block walk from the bus stop to the gate. Obviously, I live to tell the tale and nothing ever happened but just something to keep in mind if you're a little skittish about cities. I never had any issues with the neighbors (as described in previous reviews) and they were nothing but pleasant. The only noise I heard was from their TV and it was by no means disrupting. The negatives are only really negatives because I was there for so long and they started to wear on me after about a month. For one, not having a real kitchen can be kind of a bummer. I can't really dock Vishnu for this though since I knew full well what I was getting myself into. I also had a really hard time keeping the space clean. I felt like I could have swept four times a day and the place still would have felt less than clean. So all in all, fine for a little while but yeah, after three months it's nice to have a kitchen again.

Overall my stay at Vishnu's place was a good experience. I had two struggles... one was the heater. It's not really under your control. You have to text the neighbors about turning it up, it's actually awkward in the beginning. And if you're freezing at night they're obviously asleep so you can't text them. Second was the bugs. If you have a fear of spiders, I suggest you find another place. I probably killed a spider every other day. Overall he is a really nice host. If you need anything he will be there to help you.

I give Vishnu 5 stars. But I'm not sure Vishnu owns the property, and I had a lot of interactions with his mother, Bettina. Things went downhill after what were persistent domestic violence incidents from the neighbors I shared a wall with spun out of control, and I had to (1) intervene to help the women (who was screaming for help) and (2) nearly call the police. Since this was a serious incident, I notified Vishnu and Bettina. The next day, the neighbors next door, especially the man beating his wife, became increasingly hostile to me and began filing false noise complaints against me (!), presumably because they wanted me to leave / get kicked out. The violence next door may have been out of Bettina's control, but the way she treated me was not. I was told: (1) I complained a lot (2) Why was I causing problems? (3) If I didn't like it, I could move. Bettina told me that, even if the neighbors next door were harassing me (i.e., banging on my door and window at after midnight), that they were long-term tenants who would be garnering more rent for her, and I was a short-term tenant, so it didn't really matter. The only negative experience I've had with AirBnB, but five months of my life I will never get back.

I had a lovely month-long stay in this studio. I could not have asked for sweeter, or more accommodating hosts. They were extremely kind and made me feel welcome! The studio itself is separate from the main house, so you only share one wall with the adjacent apartment. This means that the noise level is really very reasonable, which I liked. It is a relatively small space, but clean and thoughtful, with everything you really need. The one convenience that I missed was having laundry on the premises. However, that is not unusual in SF. If you have a car, it is a very convenient location, with free street parking. You can get anyplace quickly, with the 101 and 280 just around the corner. If you are traveling on foot/via mass transit, there are several buses within walking distance. I frequently used two that are within a couple blocks, and a couple more that were maybe 10 minutes away on Bayshore. This studio is just far enough from the heart of the Bayview to be quiet, calm, and very safe. However, close enough to have the benefits of many food and transit options. All in all, I had a great stay, and would recommend this place to others easily!

We are a family living in our small San Francisco Victorian-styled house. Here is some

Hi, I'm Vishnu! I am 23 years old, working as a merchandiser and plant specialist at a modern plant nursery (Flora Grubb Gardens -- in our neighborhood!!). I am great for giving tips on some of SF's top local spots and things in our neighborhood or closeby.

Hello, my name is Ganesha. I am 26 years old and graduated from CCA with a BFA in graphic design. At the moment, I am exploring freelance in Berlin and visit home in SF two or three times a year. I love fun activities such as hiking and clubbing. If you catch me at home I can give great advice on the music scene in SF.

Hello! I'm Bettina, Ganesha and Vishnu's mom. I moved to San Francisco from Germany in the 90's, and later started my own physical therapy practice downtown. On weekends I enjoy hiking with Tara (our vizsla), hoola-hooping, or 5rhythms dancing. I also give great advice on SF and local things to do.

We look forward to hearing from all possible guests and hosts. Please feel free to ask us questions! :-)

Best,
Vishnu, Ganesha, & Bettina
