About This Listing
The new barefoot luxury is refined:We call it "simplicity"
...Ojo del Mar ("eye of the sea"), is a small, eco friendly secluded retreat nestled between the pristine beaches and the tropical rainforest in the wilds of Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula.
As National Geographic says, the Osa is the "Last Great Peninsula," still untouched by the ravages of civilization, with over 350 species of birds, 115 species of reptiles, 750 species of trees and 10,000 species of insects...along with the 100,000 acre fantastic Corcovado National Park. This is a gorgeous and remote spot: we cherish the Osa.
Waking up to the morning sound of howler monkeys, the squawking of macaws and the orchestral singing of birds and insects against the background rhythm of the ocean.......It's a place to reconnect to the essential.
Ojo del Mar has capacious spaces in its main "Casa Grande" (restaurant) with hardwood floors and a thatched roof bamboo construction, solar powered, all built by hand without power tools. Ojo del Mar's building concept follows a calling that is environmentally and socially responsible.
We welcome you and all sorts of groups/events to support ourmindful and sustainable commitments in deep connection with nature.
We also have great places to relax on the beach, such as our hammocks, ocean-tree platform and Yoga Lounge. During the season (May through December) if you are lucky you can see turtles nesting and baby turtles hatching.
During the day when not out on a tour, enjoying the beach, lazing around the natural river pool or practicing yoga, the ‘Casa Grande’ offers a variety of ways to while away the hours. During the day folks enjoy the library, socialize with other guests, watch the sights unfold in the open air kitchen, our staff whipping up a fancy dessert or baking bread, play a game of chess or a bit of music, read up on the rainforest, and when needed, check in with planet earth on our free WiFi service. As an "eco-resort", we do not offer air conditioning, telephones, or televisions,... we are 100% off the grid.
Please note: We are happy to charge your camera batteries, I-phones and blackberries, but we cannot charge your laptops because we have limited power source (solar energy only).
Meanwhile, the solitude and beauty of the beach awaits you, the jungle of the Osa is calling (literally), Ojo del Mar's gardens, with a variety of native species are beckoning,…
We, Nico and Mark, consider Ojo del Mar as a sacred place of happiness and live energy, far from everything but closer to its goal: Living large on a small ecological footprint.
Ojo del Mar's 6 rustic, airy, elevated cabins are as close to nature as you can get. They are privately set among beautiful tropical gardens and trails on the property allow further exploration of tropical fruits and flowers and of the colorful wildlife species.
All Cabinas have orthopedic beds, some have double beds, others have two twin beds that make into deluxe kings; all come with mosquito netting (even bugs are minimal here in paradise), cotton sheets and plenty of pillows, towels, biodegradable soaps, candles, flowers, etc.. Each cabina has its own mosaic-floored outdoor garden shower and sink. Most come with a private bathroom, two cabinas have their own bathroom under the same roof. A fabulous breakfast is included in the price of your stay, and lunch and dinner are available at our restaurant in the “Casa Grande” as well.
We also offer two small locally hand crafted Bamboo Tiki tents for 2 people with either a double or 2 twin beds. The tents are spacious, close to the ocean on wooden platforms. They have a private outdoor shower, but you will be sharing a communal bathhouse with all facilities.
Ojo Del Mar lodge featuring yoga, wellness & whole foods, ecotourism and a retreat center in the Osa Peninsula Costa Rica.
Pictures absolutely don't do the Ojo Del Mar Justice. Hands down one of the most relaxing places I've ever been. The food at breakfast and dinner was fantastic and the bar/restaurant next door also had great food and was adorable. Nico set up a horse riding tour and a day hiking trip into Cocovado which were both excellent. The area was a bit more remote than we expected, which for us was a good thing. It does get really dark at night, though so I'd recommend bringing a flashlight!
We were personally greeted by a cheerful Nico who gave us a little tour of the place. Nico is the perfect host, relaxed and very helpful with info and tour recommendations.
Given all the previous reviews, we had very high expectations, but the food is absolutely delicious!!
The place is beautiful and the impressive construction of the main house, the huts and the open air bathrooms is fantastic, as you are so close to the nature. With monkeys in the trees and hammocks overlooking the beach it is the perfect place to stay for both relaxation and adventure when visiting Osa Peninsula.
My husband and I loved our 2 night stay at Ojo del Mar. Our house/hut oozed charm, with its private trail and wooden bridge, organic architecture of bamboo and a variety of local wood. So beautifully conceived and executed. Our wall less shower was surrounded by jungle. What a treat. The common area is just as lovely and we enjoyed the fresh buffet breakfast and chats with other guests at the long communal table. The beach is clean and gorgeous and right on the property. Our hosts were gracious, kind, and informative. Ojo del Mar is truly a taste of paradise.
Ojo Del Mar is a magical place... if you are looking for a refreshing alternative to the ubiquitous resort experience, look no further. We felt as though we were truly living in the jungle in our open-air cabin, awaking every morning to the sounds of monkeys and parrots. The waves of the nearby ocean and the hum of night insects lulled us to an early sleep every night.
In the morning, the coffee was always waiting for us in the main house. Breakfast was fresh and plentiful and just what we needed before an active day on the Osa.
Nico was wonderful about arranging our activities, there was no need to book ahead of time. Also we were reassured that Nico directed us to the best guides and services. As busy as she is, Nico managed to answer all of our questions before and during our stay.
Dinner was magnificent! As foodies and as people who appreciate fresh, healthful food, we were in heaven. One of the most delightful things about Ojo Del Mar is the concept of sitting at a large communal table, meeting other travelers and sharing stories about our days.
It is worth mentioning that this is not the place for everyone. If you are fearful of insects or require air conditioning or if you need complete privacy... stay elsewhere. Bring your sense of adventure... take a flashlight or even better, a headlamp to find your way around at night. Bring clothing that can dry easily since everything stays pretty damp in the tropical environment. The insects were not bad but bring bug spray nevertheless. The only thing that I wish I had brought and didn't was a washcloth. Oh, and the water in the showers is unheated (except for one location)... and this freeze-baby didn't mind a bit- it was that warm!
I can't begin to say any one thing that made Ojo Del Mar so special. As a lover of nature, animals, delicious food and stimulating conversation... I was never at a loss. Though there were plenty of activities available, I was just as happy reading a book in a hammock and watching the life in the jungle around me. I completely lost track of time while visiting. We look forward to our return!

My husband and I had a fantastic time at Ojo Del Mar in May 2013, celebrating our honeymoon. It was the start of the rainy season in Costa Rica and as it turned out we were the only visitors to stay at Ojo Del Mar, so Nico upgraded us to the nicest cabina they had available. The organic food was fantastic (Nico is a gourmet chef and every meal was outstanding) and the place was incredibly relaxing; we went to sleep and awoke to the sounds of the jungle every day. We watched monkeys play from our open shower and from our favourite spots, perched on a couple of hammocks in the main lodge. The main lodge, cabinas and whole property is beautifully designed and constructed by owners Nico and Mark. We really enjoyed our experience here, felt very spoiled and left with some new and exciting ideas about sustainable living in our own household,
