CASINHA RAIBANDAR A true wooden Chalet situated on the Banks of the River Mandovi

The Space

CASINHA RAIBANDAR is a true Wooden Chalet situated on the banks of Goa's largest River "Mandovi" in the Heritage Zone of Ribandar town. Built in 1730 it underwent major restoration works completed in 2012. It is located on the outskirt of the City of Panjim, and within the Corporation of the city of Panjim. It is history that centuries ago the first Capital City of Old Goa was first shifted to Ribandar due to the Plague. It was later shifted to the present main city of Panjim. The Ribandar Church nearby was the first resting place of the body of St. Francis Xavier when brought to Goa from the Far East. His body was then shifted to Old Goa where it is preserved till today.

Casinha Raibandar is centrally located, just 10 minutes to the Panjim Central Bus Stand which is equidistant from North and South Goa. Just a 5 minutes’ walk from the house to the Ribandar Center (or Patto as it is known in Goa), you will find available dry provisions, fresh vegetables, meats and fish besides a chemist and a fast food shop. The bus stand is also situated here. The road going Eastwards will take you to the ancient Portuguese Capital city of Goa known as Old Goa which is just 6 Km away. Goa was the only overseas State of Portugal known as "Estado da India" and most of the history lies in this city of Old Goa. This is a location having world famous historical sites and numerous Cathedrals including the Cathedral of Bom Jesu where the body of St. Francis Xavier is preserved and visible to date.

We have a private car service on call from the house and other car and bike rental facilities are also available for which information will be provided.

The Chalet is fitted with all amenities one can think of and what you would normally like to have in your home. Some of the amenities are two fully equipped kitchens, dishwasher, microwave ovens, baking oven, garbage erator, U.V. filter, hot and cold water fountain, clothes washing machine and dryer etc. etc. Besides, the house is fitted with a hydro pneumatic water pressure system giving full pressure on all the water outlets and showers.

Housekeeping service is available on a daily basis. The house keeper is a good cook and additional cooking services can be requested for if needed. The aforesaid services are available for a minimal fee depending on your requirement.

There is an in-house convenience store where we provide mostly everything you would need from cooking ingredients to variety of beverages, pre-prepared foods, milk etc. etc. It is really convenient and thus the name “CONVENIENCE STORE”.

The house is divided into three levels and has four large bedrooms, each with toilets attached. The main Hall, Kitchen, dining and sitting areas is on the road level. There is a large garage which can accommodate a large vehicle plus 2 or 3 two wheelers. Two bedrooms are located on the first floor above the road level and two bedrooms are located 3 meters below the road level right on the river edge.

The house is designed so that the view of the river, the Salem Ali Bird Sanctuary and adjacent islands are prominent from every location in the house. The upper bedrooms have a spacious wooden deck with deck chairs to relax on with full view of the river. The lower bedrooms open onto a paved patio which is on the river edge. It has docking facilities for a reasonably sized yacht.
The upper bedrooms have its own kitchenette fully equipped including a fridge. There is also an ironing board on this deck. The lower bedrooms have fridges in each bedroom. Barbecue equipment including coal is provided so you can enjoy a barbecue on the stone (website hidden) equipment is also available for the ardent fisherman.

We provide the best quality bed linen and bath towels. Cleanliness is our motto.

In the hall there is a fully fledged computer station including printer and scanner. There is free unlimited Broad Band Internet and Wi-Fi is accessible from all the bedrooms and at all locations in the house. A music station attached to the computer system allows you to play music from the internet, pen drive or memory card or just connect to your mobile or other portable equipment. Dish T V is installed with all available channels on Tata Sky. There is also Telephone (incoming only) with cordless stations at each floor level.

We have taken great pains to ensure that our guest have the best of comforts and feel at home.

  • Our stay at Casina Raibandar was fabulous. The pictures on this site had us think the place may be too good to be true, but it turned out to be even better. All the amenities listed are provided in good working condition.

The house is well located and quite accessible. Interiors are very well ventilated and the house is spacious. Both sets of rooms have excellent views of the river. Facilities within the rooms are great as well. Small things like hand-wash and towels show that the host has put a lot of thought into making guests comfortable. Much appreciated.

The kitchen is well equipped and basic cooking can easily be done. Basics like oil, sugar, salt pepper are available. A caretaker comes in every morning to clean up the place and do the dishes. She is quite unobtrusive so that's a plus as well. There's a well-stocked pantry on the premises, from which items can be used at MRP. Bread and eggs are complimentary.

Captain Lobo (email hidden) and came in on the first day to give us a basic house tour. The place is so well done up, you're almost tempted to not venture out! Definitely recommended!

  • Our stay at the Casinha was fabulous. The chalet matched the description provided by the host Capt Leo.

The 'Convenience Store' was stocked with all the goodies that one would require for a relaxing stay.

The location of the chalet is ideal as it is close to Panaji and it is easy to travel to north, south as well as old goa from there.

The chalet is tastefully furnished and well maintained. Spic and span with all utensils and appliances that a house needs. The maid was very helpful and did the chores every morning. She also cooked a meal for us on one of the evenings.

Capt Leo has maintained a very informative few page "User Manual" for operation of the various appliances, electrical accessories and even the garbage erator. There were books and magazines (though we did not have enough time to read). The garage was spacious and we could easily park our SUV inside it.

The highlight of the Chalet are the viewing decks and the patio which provide an unbridled view of the river Mandovi and the view of boats, ferries and steamers passing by.

The bedrooms and baths were clean and well kept. The living room with the high chairs was really inviting. The dining area next to the kitchen was the place to quench our thirst and satiate the hunger pangs.

The internet connection worked well. One member of our family had to travel early in the morning to catch a flight. The driver of the private taxi arrived at the designated time. One of the ACs was not functioning properly which Capt Leo attended to at the earliest.

It was a wonderful experience and we would love to visit very soon.

  • Stayed at Casinha Raibandar Panjib with friends and family from 10 to 12th April 2014. Would just like to thank Captain Leo for his warm hospitality. Would like to also mention that the place is very well looked after and with all facilities required for a family holiday.
Was greatly impressed by the location and facilities. Wanted to extend my stay but unfortunately the place was booked and not available.
Would highly recommend the place to anyone visiting Goa and also would like to revisit soon.

  • Located in the heart of Panjim, Casinha is simply the best place to stay in Goa. Our experience was totally awesome and it felt like we were staying in a houseboat since the house is located on the river bank having an awesome view. The house is beautifully furnished with great interiors and has almost everything one would need for a comfortable stay. Capt. Leo (email hidden) and goes out of his way to make sure his guests have a pleasant stay. The way he takes care of every small small thing is commendable and worth a mention. His focus is not to make money or micro manage the guests but to provide a home away from away. Our experience was so good that we just did not feel like going back. I would definitely love to (email hidden) whenever i visit Goa next and would recommend it to all. Thank you so very much Capt. Leo!! We all truly loved your abode! :)

  • Casinha Raibandar - A place we called home for 3 days... It was one of the best stays of our lives with everything made available by Capt Leo. The Chalet is located in a place from wher we can go eirther side of Goa easily. The pics of the house do not do justice to the actual place.

We actually did not go out much since we were enjoying so much in the Chalet itself. The Chalet is a beautiful structure with all modern facilities built in. Capt has ensured that everything else is made available oterwise.

I am surely gonna visit this place agan and again in future... Cheers!!!

  • We organized a month long writer's residency at Casinha Raibandar, and I must say all of our expectations were fulfilled. The house isn't just extremely beautiful (with every room overlooking the river) but also very practical, with all the amenities one can hope for. An extra plus for the "convenience store" that Capt. Leo keeps stocked in the house with a pick-and-pay system, and his willingness to help out with everything from hospital visits to where to go for a good night on the town. And through Capt. Leo we got to have Irene cook and clean for us during the stay, all in all making the Casinha more of a boutique hotel than a self run bnb. We will return!

  • I agree with most other reviewers about Capt Leo's property. The captain (email hidden), quick to respond to any questions and help sort out any problems (eg, air conditioners needed attention) that arose during our stay.
The house is well equipped and has more gadgets than we expected, which makes it very comfortable as everything worked as it should. We appreciated the use of white bed sheets and towels, all clean and newish, so we weren't left wondering if they clean as we would have if they were coloured and printed.
The bedrooms at the lowest level though smaller than the ones at the third level are cooler and it's lovely to walk out into the courtyard from the rooms. We had no problems with the internet, and although there was a television, we didn't turn it on.
We enjoyed catching up with family members around the kitchen table and in the courtyard at the river level. We cooked some simple meals, had some catered and brought in takeaway on other days. We especially enjoyed the fresh fish (email hidden) (a five-minute drive in the direction of Old Goa) that we brought home for a couple of meals.
I'd advise arranging transport, especially if you are a large group. Although the road outside the house is quite busy, it's peaceful and quiet inside.
The 'convenience store' is the house is well stocked; I found it difficult to ensure that we accounted for all the stuff we used, as I was never sure if everyone listed down the items they had helped themselves to, especially things from the refrigerator!
Although we were aware that the property does not provide cleaning services when we booked the place, we found we had to spend more time than we planned for on cleaning the floors and bathrooms as it is a large property with quite a bit of common area. This was the one downside during our stay, the other being our too-short stay of only one week.
I would not hesitate to recommend this property in an old and historic part of Goa, to anyone looking for a family reunion or a quiet time away from all the crowded touristy areas and the noisy traffic-congested beach areas.

  • Thank you Captain Leo, for making our stay so good. You have been nothing but helpful, always around when needed. The convenience store was very useful, and saved us dashing out to stock up on our arrival. Our first time in Goa, was made easy by your help, and recommendations for some lovely eating places.
Regards to you and your family.
