The space

The Fat Pigeon is a three bedroom self contained flat on the ground floor of our house. You will have the flat to yourselves. We live upstairs. There are two rooms with double /queen beds & the third room has 3 single beds. Great for a family or group of friends. Children are very welcome. We have a trampoline & some books & Lego to keep them happy. There is a lovely lake swimming beach right across the road.

The flat has its own kitchen, bathroom, toilet, lounge & dining area. It also has a BBQ & outdoor eating area.
There is wireless internet, TV & selection of DVDs. We have many mountain bikers stay with us & use the famous Redwood Forest tracks. We have room for you to store your own bikes on our property.

There are no shops in this area, so you will need to bring all your own food & beverages including breakfast food, tea and coffee.

At times, we will be away, but this can be an independent holiday experience with the key in a coded key box etc.

We use grid connected solar power for our electricity and try to live as sustainably as possible with recycling, composting facilities & even have a solar oven guests can use.

There is no public transport from Rotorua to Lake Tarawera. You will your own transport.

On occasions we go away & rent out the top & bottom. This is a separate listing under "The Fat Pigeon Homestead"

We have a covered luxury pontoon boat that we use to explore the lake & guests particularly enjoy the trip to hotwater beach & a secluded hot pool only accessible by boat or a 3 to 4 hr wolk. We give a big discount to guests for a 2 & 1/2 hr trip.

Around this area you can swim, fish or hike. Bikes & kayaks for guests to use. Awake to bird song. This is a renowned area for native birds. The fat pigeons are the big, native pigeons which are becoming threatened in N.Z. However Lake Tarawera has an abundance of them. The Fat Pigeon is a great base to explore the lakes & Rotorua.

Sometimes we are away so this is set up to be an independent holiday experience with the key in a coded box. Just go in & make yourselves at home. There is your own private access to the flat.

We are usually here when guests stay & enjoy meeting them, but occasionally are off travelling & using Airbnb ourselves or are out on the boat or in town. However it is set up to be an independent stay and we dont need to be around. Just go in & make yourselves at home. This way it gives both us & you freedom to come & go as you please. We often have woofers staying with us; travellers who do 4 hours work for food & accommodation as a cultural exchange.

A quiet, safe area in a close knit neighbourhood.
Experience lake activities, hiking, biking, kayaking. The Fat Pigeon will particularly suit people who are interested in living sustainably & are interested in the natural beauty of the area. Lake Tarawera is a beautiful fresh water lake 25 mins from the centre of Rotorua. Beautiful, native forest surrounds this pristine lake with Mt Tarawera, an extinct volcano, providing a dramatic backdrop. The lake is beautiful to swim in in summer & we are right across the road from a lovely sandy beach.

There is no public transport from Rotorua to Lake Tarawera. You will need your own car to get here.

Two nights minimum.
We do not supply breakfast but there is a kitchen & fridge.

Interaction with guests

We will give you as much space as you want. Available for any questions etc.

Other things to note

When driving here, don't just rely on your GPS as some people have problems with it. GPS sometimes gets you to the start of Spencer Road & often no further. Keep going right along Spencer Rd until you come to 444 Spencer Rd. It is about 10 minutes past the Buried Village & we have a sign saying "The Fat Pigeon" etc on the roadside. You will also see two huge corrugated iron "pigeons". Make sure children don't touch these as the edges are sharp.

We arrived late at night and everything was ready for us. Liz came to welcome us and explained everything. Space was tight, but perfect for the two families. My daughter left her iPad behind and Liz was super helpful to have it express mailed to us the following day. We only had one night so we could not fully take advantage of the beautiful soundings and the lake - I recommend to explore the hot water hole with Liz and mike, unfortunately we missed that.

Liz and Mike were wonderful, generous hosts. We wish we lived closer to them so we could visit again and again. We cooked all our meals at the apartment, which worked out just fine. The lake is beautiful, and we used their kayaks often. The birds were amazing. The apartment is not fancy, but it is quite comfortable. I would definitely recommend it.

Mike and Liz were very accommodating hosts. Booked last minute for two days with no problems. The accommodation is very nice, the environment remote and beautiful. In fact would like to stay again!

We had a wonderful time staying at The Fat Pigeon. It worked wonderfully for a group trip as we were able to rent out the whole downstairs 3 bedroom flat. It was so nice to come back to after a day of sightseeing and cook dinner in the kitchen and all sit around the dining room table together. Another bonus is that it is on Lake Tarawera, about 20 min outside of Rotorua, so it doesn't stink like all of Rotorua does. It was so nice to breath some fresh air after smelling sulfur all day.

I stayed for a short night but Mike was very nice and helpful. The place was very neat and clean, with all the amenities I needed and a good internet connection. The location is also nice.

This is a good place to explore the volcanic lakes in the area from. It is in a fairly isolated spot, so you definitely need a car. We had a nice stay. The owners were friendly, but we had a lot of privacy on the bottom floor. There may be short-term gardeners called WOOFERS staying there also. They have many fruits and veggies in their gardens. Good place to stay.

My only complaint is that we only stayed one night at the Fat Pigeon. The place is extremely cozy and comfortable. Short 2 minute walk to the beautiful lake and fresh herbs and lemons growing on the property

Come and explore the Bay of Plenty. We live locally and enjoy meeting the different guests we have come to stay. We have hosted people for many years; we have travellers on a cultural exchange as well as own & run holiday homes. We travel extensively & just this year we used Airbnb in Europe & loved it. Cant wait to use it again. It also gives us an insight to what travellers need & like.
