We live upstairs.) .There are two double rooms & the third room has 3 single beds. You can also rent the whole flat. Price on application. Great for a family or group of friends. Children are very welcome. We have a trampoline & some books & Lego to keep them happy.

There is wireless internet, TV & selection of DVDs. We have many mountain bikers stay with us & use the famous Redwood Forest tracks. We have room for you to store your own bikes on our property.
There are no shops in this area, so you will need to bring all your own food & beverages including breakfast food, tea and coffee.
At times, we will be away, but this can be an independent holiday experience with the key in a coded key box etc.
We use grid connected solar power for our electricity and try to live as sustainably as possible with recycling, composting facilities & even have a solar oven guests can use.
There is no public transport from Rotorua to Lake Tarawera. You will need your own car to get here.
You will notice that The Fat Pigeon is advertised twice. This is because with Airbnb we need to advertise separately for the amount of rooms.
We have a covered luxury pontoon boat that we use to explore the lake & guests particularly enjoy the trip to hotwater beach & a secluded hot pool only accessible by boat or a 3 to 4 hr wolk. We give a big discount to guests for a 2 & 1/2 hr trip Need at least 2 people or a $100 minimum. We can also take you rock jumping & swimming from the boat for a small fee eg $10. Can include a meal on the boat too.
Around this area you can swim, fish or hike. Bikes & kayaks for guests to use. Awake to bird song. This is a renowned area for native birds. The fat pigeons are the big, native pigeons which are becoming threatened in N.Z. However Lake Tarawera has an abundance of them. The Fat Pigeon is a great base to explore the lakes & Rotorua.
Sometimes we are away so this is set up to be an independent holiday experience with the key in a coded box. Just go in & make yourselves at home. There is your own private access to the flat.
We are usually here when guests stay & enjoy meeting them, but occasionally are off travelling & using Airbnb ourselves or are out on the boat or in town. However it is set up to be an independent stay and we dont need to be around. Just go in & make yourselves at home. This way it gives both us & you freedom to come & go as you please. We often have woofers staying with us; travellers who do 4 hours work for food & accommodation as a cultural exchange.
A quiet, safe area in a close knit neighbourhood.
Experience lake activities, hiking, biking, kayaking. The Fat Pigeon will particularly suit people who are interested in living sustainably & are interested in the natural beauty of the area. Lake Tarawera is a beautiful fresh water lake 25 mins from the centre of Rotorua. Beautiful, native forest surrounds this pristine lake with Mt Tarawera, an extinct volcano, providing a dramatic backdrop. The lake is beautiful to swim in in summer & we are right across the road from a lovely sandy beach.
There is no public transport from Rotorua to Lake Tarawera. You will need your own car to get here.
Two nights minimum unless it's for a group
We do not supply breakfast but there is a kitchen & fridge.
Other Things to Note
When driving here, don't just rely on your GPS as some people have problems with it. GPS usually gets you to the start of Spencer Road & often no further. Keep going right along Spencer Rd until you come to 444 Spencer Rd. It is about 10 minutes past the Buried Village & we have a sign saying "The Fat Pigeon" etc on the roadside.
Welcome to "The Fat Pigeon". We hope you enjoy your stay.
You will need to bring your own food & supplies, ( including breakfast, tea, coffee & milk) as there are no shops at Lake Tarawera .
Rotorua city is approx 25 minutes away
BOAT RAMP The closest is either on Bay Road towards the end of road, or at Stoney Point
SWIMMING A great swimming spot is at Cliff Rd ; there’s also a nice little “beach” there for children.
We have recycling bins. There is a compost bin in kichen for food scraps, & compost bins ouside by the clotheslines.
HEAT PUMPS Please conserve energy, & only use the heat pumps if really cold or until the fire is lit.. Shut doors of rooms that you’re not using. Please switch them off as soon as you’re warm!!!! Don’t leave on overnight or when you leave the house.
MOBILE PHONES can work on the lake, or at the end of Spencer Rd , which is a few minutes drive away.
PHONE We have a plan that enables us to ring landlines NZ wide. Please use a phone card for calls to mobile phones or overseas. The phone number here is (phone number hidden)
Enjoy this beautiful area, the lake, the walks & the bird life. There are many wood pigeons, tuis, fantails (piwakawakas), pukekos, and the occasional kingfisher & at night you can often hear moreporks.
No smoking please.
Mike and Liz introduced themselves, welcomed us and told us not to hesitate to ask for any assistance. We all got great vibes from them both.Lovely people. The accommodations were as advertised and we could not have been happier.
Liz & Mike were wonderful hosts and really enjoyed our stay. The house is in a beautiful spot next to the lake and the walk up the hill behind the house is a highlight. They were extremely helpful with showing us around and even shared produce from their community garden and kitchen garden. We highly recommend and would stay again.
Liz and Mike were such great hosts. The downstairs area had everything you need in a stay but what made our stay really special was our interaction with Liz and Mike. You can have as little or as much interaction with them as you like. They took our family out on the lake in their boat which became one of our highlights of our entire trip. We thouroghly enjoyed our stay with Liz and Mike and would strongly reccomend their AirBnB place to anyone.
I can just confirm all other reviews for this accommodation: it was gorgeous and terrific, staying for three nights at the 'fat pigeon' with Liz and Mike and their lovely guests. It was a cosy atmosphere and I've got a heartwarming welcome and delicious lunch/dinner. The boat trip was amazing and unforgetable. Thanks for your help and everything, dear Hosts! The power cut off had no effect on my enjoyable stay b.t.w.! :-) I would love to come back once.
What I liked: The outdoor table is very pretty and a nice place to eat. The birdsong in the yard and the general peace and quiet of the place is lovely. Access to bikes and kayaks was a bonus - we did get a chance to use the kayaks, but it's a bit hilly for the bikes and the road is quite narrow so we didn't feel safe riding on it.
What I didn't like: I honestly feel like the description as advertised is either incomplete or inaccurate - it needs some serious editing for clarity. In re-reading it now, I can see (kind of) where I didn't understand what we were getting into, but it's not clear at all, in my opinion, when first reading it. This AirBnB (and it doesn't fit the description of an AirBnB as we have experienced them over the past 8 months) is actually a hostel. When we arrived, the owners were away - which we knew. We were told that a pair of French guest workers would be in charge and would meet us. That didn't happen. Instead, we were met by an Australian woman who looked somewhat horrified to see us . . . turns out she was occupying the same space we were about to occupy and was not aware that others might be coming in to stay in another of the bedrooms. We had no idea we'd be sharing the space with another traveller. We did manage to work it out, but it was very uncomfortable at first. We took the one room that had a lock on the door - the others are sliders with no way of securing your property should you leave the home for a few hours. The next day, the Australian lady left and we had the apartment to ourselves; but a young German couple came in the day after . . . and looked as horrified as we had at the arrangement. Clearly, all three of us had different expectations based on the advertising. The ad also mentions that breakfast is included. Not true. There is a cupboard with a bag of oatmeal in it that is marked 'for workers and wwoofers' . They are instructed that this is a healthy meal. No milk to go with it. There is another shelf that is marked 'for everybody'. Not much there but some salt. As for the internet - pretty much non-existent unless you go upstairs to the owners patio. The French couple were there when we tried to use it and didn't look at all pleased to have us sitting in the space. The bedrooms are only big enough to hold a bed - we had a hard time fitting our suitcases in. The space was reasonably clean but a bit tired looking. We've stayed in many AirBnB's over the past 8 months of travelling, paying similar prices to this one, but with much better experiences.
That's a shame that things weren't as you expected. We thought your husband was joking when he mentioned that " everything in this country is backward" Not sure why you didn't tell us of your concerns when we saw you.
Your suggestion regarding locks on the other doors are valid. We had already ordered some & are awaiting the builder.
Nowhere do we say that breakfast is included. As quoted from the website 'There are no shops in this area, so you will need to bring all your own food & beverages including breakfast food, tea and coffee."
We also make it clear that it is a room not the entire 3 bed bedroomed flat that you are renting for $40 pp !! It is written that people are welcome to rent the whole flat instead of a room & to ask us for the price which is dependant on high or low season. For two people it would've been $120 a night
We do understand that different people are suited to different places & this our first negative review As you can see by our many reviews most people embrace the experience.
This is an absolutely beautiful spot for relaxing and enjoying nature. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting some quiet time. The flat was well equipt and the host very helpful.
We absolutely loved staying at The Fat Pigeon, what an amazing part of New Zealand- stunning lake and lush surroundings. We wished we had booked a few more days.Mike and Liz were excellent hosts and we thoroughly enjoyed the boat trip out to the hot pool, and being able to cook up a breakfast out on the boat was excellent. Our kids are also still talking about the boat trip. Thanks again and we will definitely recommend your place and even come again. Juliette

Come and explore the Bay of Plenty. We live locally and enjoy meeting the different guests we have come to stay. We have hosted people for many years; we have travellers on a cultural exchange as well as own & run holiday homes. We travel extensively & just this year we used Airbnb in Europe & loved it. Cant wait to use it again. It also gives us an insight to what travellers need & like.
