Lake Tarawera is a beautiful fresh water lake 25 mins from the centre of Rotorua. Beautiful, native forest surrounds this pristine lake with Mt Tarawera, an extinct volcano, providing a dramatic backdrop.
Accommodation is in " The Fat Pigeon"; a three bedroom self contained flat on the ground floor of our house. We live upstairs. The cost is $40 pp per night..There are two double rooms & the third room has 3 single beds. Also can be rented as the whole three bedroomed flat for a family or group of friends. Special rates for this depending on high or low season.
The flat has its own kitchen, bathroom, toilet, lounge & dining area. It also has a BBQ & outdoor eating area.
There is wireless internet, TV & selection of DVDs.
There are kayaks & bikes to use free of charge. You can fish for trout in the lake & are welcome to use our rod. You will need to get a fishing licence.
There are no shops in this area, so you will need to bring all your own food & beverages including breakfast food, tea and coffee.
At times, we will be away, but this can be an independent holiday experience with the key in a coded key box etc.
We use grid connected solar power for our electricity. The first place at Lake Tarawera to do this.
There is no public transport from Rotorua to Lake Tarawera. You will need your own car to get here or we can collect you from Rotorua. We do come & go from Rotorua frequently, but if we need to make a special trip it will cost $15.
You will notice that The Fat Pigeon is advertised twice. This is because with Airbnb we need to advertise separately for the amount of rooms.
By arrangement, & if convenient for us, we can provide some meal. $15pp for an evening meal & $10pp for breakfast. We enjoy eating healthily & in season much of our food is straight from our garden; we also cook with a solar oven.
We have a covered luxury pontoon boat that we use to explore the lake & guests particularly enjoy the trip to hotwater beach & a secluded hot pool only accessible by boat or a 3 to 4 hr wolk. We give a big discount to guests; $50 pp for a 2 1/2hr trip. Need at least 2 people or a $100 minimum. We can also take you rock jumping & swimming from the boat for a small fee eg $10.
Around this area you can swim, fish or hike. Bikes & kayaks for guests to use. Awake to bird song. This is a renowned area for native birds. The fat pigeons are the big, native pigeons which are becoming threatened in N.Z. However Lake Tarawera has an abundance of them. The Fat Pigeon is a great base to explore the lakes & Rotorua.
I stayed for a short night but Mike was very nice and helpful. The place was very neat and clean, with all the amenities I needed and a good internet connection. The location is also nice.
We only stayed one night in the Fat Pigeon due to the last minute booking. My children wanted an extra night in Rotorua. Liz and Mike are very helpful to offer their house on a special rate so it will suit my budget. Eveything was ready for us when we came. The lake is near the house and my children enjoyed it.
We had a wonderful time at The Fat Pigeon. Thanks very much to Liz and Mike for a warm welcome and making us feel at home! This place is highly recommended!
Liz & Mike are very generous and helpful hosts. We enjoyed our stay and communications with them. Would recommend their accommodation.
We have just stayed this wonderful house three days ago and we fell in love straight away..Liz and mike were nice and lovely !! Thank you so much!!Highly recommend!!
I had a wonderful 3 nights at The Fat Pigeon. Liz and Mike were fantastic hosts. Very friendly and willing to chat but equally happy to let you get on and do your own thing and allow you space. I borrowed their kayak one afternoon and they kindly took me out on their boat with Liz's brother and her family who were over from Oz. It's a great spot and I would highly recommend a stay here if you are in the region. Thanks guys.
Great place to stay. Boat tour on the lake, with hot tub soaks and meal was fabulous. Cheerful friendly hosts. Small kitchen and shared bath, but worked well for us.
Very nice place quiet and close to the beach cozy space only a small bedroom but that was solved by the use of an extra room for our luggage, very helpful people and beautiful walking and hiking routes nearby
Liz and Mike were very welcoming and we felt like we were visiting family. They have a beautiful place nestled in the forest and we made use of their kayaks for a short paddle on Lake Tarawera. Highly recommended!
Liz and Mike are perfect hosts with an amazing home in one of NZ's most beatiful spots. We can't recommend them highly enough - great conversation, company, generosity and warmth, as well as an unforgettable trip out onto lake Tarawera in their wonderful boat that was the highlight of our week in the Nth Island. Cheers guys!
