We really enjoyed our stay at Amelia's studio. The location is great, very centrally located and convenient to everything in the city center. The studio was very clean and spacious with an amazing view of the Table Mountain. Amelia was a great host and quickly responded to all…
I spent two months in Cape Town, and Amelia's apartment served as a perfect home during my stay. It's well situated in the city bowl, and I was able to walk to many of the urban attractions. And, when I wanted to explore beyond Cape Town, it was easy for me to rent a car and driv…
I stayed 68 nights during the winter and compared to the apartment I stayed on Camp street for 12 nights before I moved here, Amelia was definitely not the preferred host. I think it all started with the 10% student discount I inquired about because I was interning for the summer…
Response from Amelia:
Hi Vivian. Thank you for your feedback. However, I feel that you are being a bit disingenuous here, as you know from the many previous electricity bills I sent you that yours was over five times as much as any previous guests have run up - so my asking you to pay half is actually a lot less than the difference! Also, you admitted to me in our communication that there were days that you left the heater on when you went out - and when the cleaning lady arrived during the day the heater was switched on and in her words she nearly fainted from the heat in the apartment. All of this despite my house rules specifically asking guests to be frugal with electricity, as we have an energy shortage in South Africa and overconsumption has from time to time lead to blackouts. Still, I have never had to ask any of my previous guests to pay for electricity in three years of hosting, as everyone else's usage has been fair. I would also like to point out that you chose not to make use of any of the provided extra blankets, rather choosing to turn up the heat and walk around in a T-shirt in the middle of winter, in a country where energy is a scarce resource. You also mention getting another email from me after you checked out, complaining about more damage you have caused. This is also a bit disingenuous, as the "email" was actually the motivation for the claim I had to make against your security deposit, a claim you asked me to submit as you didn't want to pay for the electricity bill you ran up. The damage amount for the curtains you scorched (not rumpled!) from overusing the heater (and leaving it against the curtains, which could have caused a fire) is far more than what the deposit even covers - damage which I now have to cover out of my own pocket. As for the chip in the toilet seat - I am positive it only appeared there during your stay, and the cleaning lady also attests to that. To describe your experience as the most degrading of your life, really saddens me tremendously, as yours is the first negative review I have received in three years of hosting. In fact, I was awarded a "top vacation rental" award for receiving such positive user reviews on a well known accommodation site I have been on for far longer than AirBnB. Because of this fact and knowing how hard I tried to accommodate you and be reasonable with you, I believe that this statement of yours is nothing but hyperbole to avoid taking responsibility for the damage you have caused. I am positive that my future reviews will prove this.
